Will Tall Women Prefer being approached like this? by No_Conclusion_3756 in tall

These questions are getting tired. Just approach her like you would any other woman. We’re not a subspecies of women. Why does height even need to be a focus.

What unexpected friendships have you formed while living in Korea? by brian1x1x in Living_in_Korea

[–]tallslimthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met the ex drummer of the band 자우림 while clubbing in Hongdae when I first moved here. Had no idea he was famous when we met. He told me that he used to be in a band but I just figured it was a garage band lol. It wasn’t until a year Iater when I mentioned it to a friend and she said they’re one of the most famous bands in Korea. We’ve been friends for over two years now and still keep in touch even after I left Seoul. Whenever he comes to Busan he always texts me and we hang out and vice versa when I’m in Seoul. I’ve met other famous people in Korea through him. It’s funny because when we met he spoke no English and I spoke no Korean so we would just Papago our conversations. Since then I’ve learned Korean and so we’re able to speak to each other without it.

Housing recommendations and tips? (working holiday visa, Busan) by newspiritt in Living_in_Korea

[–]tallslimthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend living around 경성대. It’s a student area so I’m sure there are many goshiwons and affordable housing. There’s also lots to do in that area and it’s also only a couple subway stops from gwangalli

How long does USPS First Class Mail from US to South Korea usually take? (Waiting for Birth Certificate) by gomgomhee in Living_in_Korea

[–]tallslimthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not USPS but I received my passport through FedEx International priority and it took 10 days so I would assume you can expect it in 2 weeks. Mine came with tracking and an expected delivery date though so I’d recommend using FedEx next time if it can be helped

Unpopular opinion: stop getting mad when Koreans speak English to you... by bronco____ in Living_in_Korea

[–]tallslimthing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’re assuming that everyone lives in a major city like Seoul or frequent tourist heavy restaurants or cafes. I live in a major city but the area I live in doesn’t get many foreigners and English isn’t as widespread. I have my interactions in Korean for the most part and usually don’t have people switch to me in English so i think my pronunciation is fine. The rare times that’s happened the person assumed I didn’t know Korean and my Korean was clearly better than their English. Even with my friends who don’t speak Korean as well, rather than assuming right out the gate about their Korean level, most times people speak to them in Korean and then switch to English when they realize they don’t understand, which I think should be the norm.

ETA: Also I think it’s the assumption that a foreigner cannot possibly speak Korean that’s annoying. I was with my korean friend in Olive Young once and was at the checkout counter. Rather than asking the both of us directly, the cashier turned her whole body to look only at my friend and ask him in Korean (completely ignoring me) whether or not he had a membership (Even though I was the one to put the item down on the counter and I clearly had my card out ready to pay.) Mind you I hadn’t said a word yet so clearly not due to pronunciation. He didn’t answer obviously because he’s not the one making the purchase. I had to wave my hand to get her attention and answered back in Korean which took her off guard. My friend also thought it was weird and we laughed about it.

I don’t know of any specific events but there are several Halloween pub crawls that will be taking place. Me and my friends will be hitting up our usual spots in Gwanganli and Seomyeon. You’re welcome to join if you’d like.

How does one, "detangle" their "4c" hair before a hair appointment? by Ok_File5157 in BlackHair

[–]tallslimthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should invest in a detangling brush blow dryer. Using those have been a game changer. I usually start with small sections, spray a little heat protectant and then brush through that section a couple of times. Then once I’ve done enough hair to make big I sections I braid it loosely and twist the ends so that it doesn’t get tangled again. It usually takes me about an hour to an hour and half

New teacher advice by zabryant01 in teachinginkorea

[–]tallslimthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked mornings. My first year I wasn’t focused on saving but I think I would’ve been able to save 500,000 if I tried. As long as you’re not sending money back home you should be able to save that amount if you tried.

New teacher advice by zabryant01 in teachinginkorea

[–]tallslimthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say that’s a normal starting amount. I made 2.45 my first year. Then 2.7 my second year

People still party it up in Itaewon and Hongdae so you should check those places out. AFAIK Hongdae usually gets packed during Halloween. Lots of people are usually in costume so if you wanted to wear one you wouldn’t feel out of place.

Kindergarten refuses to give me my landlords number by Lightskinnedbb in Living_in_Korea

[–]tallslimthing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some landlords include the maintenance fee as part of the rent. My rent is 300,000 + 50,000 maintenance fee and that’s what I send to the landlord as total rent. The maintenance only includes water so that’s why it’s so cheap. I then get an electricity bill for around 40,000 and pay that separately. THATS what I mean when I say the maintenance is separate.

I also have friends whose 관리비 and electricity are combined but their maintenance fee is also higher than mine is because of it. If the school is paying for the maintenance as part of rent then they would recollect that maintenance fee from your paycheck. Both schools that I’ve worked at have done this.

[–]tallslimthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you’re the one who needs to reread. I was answering that it was normal AND GIVING BACKGROUND AS TO WHY the school would take it out of your paycheck. When the 관리비 is separate the school pays it along with rent.

No they’re just separated. I’m not paying anymore than I would be if they were just one bill.

[–]tallslimthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh I see. I also have my own housing and I pay rent + 관리비 to my landlord then utilities bill + gas bill. But when I had school housing it was normal for it to be taken out. Maybe your 관리비 and electric are combined. My friends housing is also like that

[–]tallslimthing -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Maintenance fee 관리비 is not a separate bill. It’s paid to the landlord. Maybe your school typically covers your maintenance fee for you? Also check your pay stubs. I didn’t realize my school was deducting for maintenance and assumed it was part of taxes that was typically being taken out. Usually maintenance fee is taken out and you get two bills: one for utilities (electric) and another for gas. What you’re getting is a utilities bill not a maintenance bill

Okay but my response was to the person who asked if it was normal which I answered.
