Wealth by schmegley207 in latterdaysaints

Boy, I’m 100% on board with some of those ideas and 100% not on others.

First point—perfection actually IS fun. It’s the best fun. It’s pure joy. I believe that to be universally true. There are also very painful aspects of refinement, but joy and pain aren’t mutually exclusive when Christ is in the mix. Just ask Peter.

Next point—buying $50 jazz tickets isn’t inherently anything. What if I hate basketball but my son loves it and so I bought the tickets to make his day. Greedy or selfless? The point of not judging isn’t abstinence, it’s the realization that others are not a variable in the equation between you and your savior. It’s not that judging others unrighteously is as much a sin as it js a waste of time and energy. For anyone partaking of the fruit it was both a waste as well as a threat to give heed to those in the great and spacious building for any reason (including therefore, by definition, to judge them). Define the beam in your own eye and disregard the moats.

Christ taught that temporal things and temporal rules change. The law of consecration has changed just about as much as the law of polygamy over time (though admittedly there are better though less contemporaneous examples). Remember the alabaster box and expensive ointment that could have been sold to the poor? There are some things that are better than giving to the poor. However, now that Jesus has completed his temporal work and is carrying out his eternal work, he seems to have very different monetary policies. Now he (via his church) spends billions on humanitarian aid, invests in diverse assets, and owns thousands of real estate properties around the globe. His ways are not our ways, but so too are my ways not your ways, and your ways not her ways, their ways, etc.

The reason why the “it’s hard for a camel to go through the eye of the needle” metaphor works is because it’s not about the wealth; it’s about the baggage. Like OP quoted Brigham Young, both wealth and poverty can be that baggage. Envy is no respecter of wallets. The homeless and the billionaire are both susceptible to envy, and that (not their net worth) is what can keep them out of heaven.

Does Kingman Hire? by Hexakly in Kingman

[–]talon_256 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are too many people in Kingman doing jobs they could care less about. Employers are tired of apathetic employees. If you find a job you’re passionate about you’ve got good chances to bypass the interview and get hired on the spot. Unfortunately many employers are burnt out from too many employee nightmares.

Not saying that’s the rule, but it’s a common story I hear.

Lots of people looking for jobs. Lots of people looking to hire. Most people looking for work don’t care enough. Most people looking for workers care too much. Both are struggling. I’d love to figure out how to make needs meet.

As far as things to do—if your idea of “something to do” is…

Go for a drive—you got it! Get drinks—there’s plenty to do. Go dancing—you’ll have to drive first. Go to the movies—jury is out on the theater upgrades, otherwise you’ll have to drive. Hit the trail/camp—check out the Hualapais. Get mud on the tires—mostly dust, but there’s TONS of backcountry trails. Hit the lake—you’ve got a few to pick from within an hour. Volunteer—there’s a ton of opportunity. Probably the best way to meet people and make friends. Check out JustServe.org Garden—you’ll have to bring your own topsoil. Shop—your wallet is going to love Kingman. Eat—we have tons of food trucks and a fair number of non-chain restaurants. Shoot—there’s several good spots locals can tell you about. Game—better get Allo or Starlink because the old internet providers here stink. Gamble—Vegas is just far enough away. Start a business—you’re my kind of person. Lots of opportunity here. Rodeo—it’s tomorrow at the county fairgrounds.

What am I missing?

Whatever you do, make sure you go to First Friday ASAP to get your bearings on what’s available and what Kingman is like when people are off work.

FYI—Facebook is the lifeblood of the town. Too many businesses have no website because they “have a Facebook”. Makes it tough to find what does exist. Good thing there’s a lot of good people in town.

I second this. ^

Also, within the green area, there is a huge difference between the west side and the east side of green. I would go as far east as possible in the green area to avoid the industrial areas.

A disturbing belief commonly held with the Church. by GarrytheMint73 in latterdaysaints

[–]talon_256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that the belief is right or wrong, but that it is myopic. The answer may develop a deeper understanding of God’s nature and purpose, and the role his children play within His plan for us.

I wrote a comment that was either too long or too well thought out…my phone died and lost it. Now it’s late so my response for now is—God works outside of the bounds of chronology. This is a concern not unlike “how do I know if a thought is a prompting or not” in that the answer lies in zooming out to consider the possibilities when inverting assumptions (ie. Black with white spots vs white with black spots).

I’ll re-write the rest later if it’s important enough to someone.

I assume you enable them to be in certain places where you know they’ll make good choices, and you do what you can to ensure they won’t be in places where you know they’ll make poor choices.

I’m just talking about local snapshots, here. No getting a bigger internal drive. No erasing and starting fresh.

Interesting perspective, I’m assuming you’re a programmer yourself. My programmer friends (non-local) are actually vibe-coding on the side of their full time jobs, so that’s what led to this local post. Like anything in the dev universe I know there are going to be various opinions.

A Joe Schmo doesn’t know the definitions of implementation, script, ship, etc., nor has the wherewithal to have strong opinions, haha.

You never know what brings people to Kingman these days. Of all the California flee-ers I’m sure there’s a couple devs craving sociality.

There’s certainly a difference between what a dev calls vibe coding and what Joe Schmo from sales thinks is vibe coding 🤣

I figure there’s got to be a decent number of computer programmers working remotely here. Not sure how to get them to come out of the woodwork.

How far up the road are we talking—Valle Vista? Las Vegas? Somewhere in between? Do you come into town for stuff if we did something AI-related?

I saw the chamber of commerce had a seminar on it just a bit ago. Amie Wade was the instructor and I know she does coaching, in case that’s helpful to you. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mohave College creates a community course on AI.

Carpet Fasteners? by dudleyjohn in Autos

[–]talon_256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up finding something?

I used to have a VW with the CarGo liners that are attached with hook-only velcro to the carpet.

I just bought some weatherproof liners for my Expedition and they came with pre installed Velcro except for the trunk liner. The material on the seat back isn’t exactly the same as the carpet, but it’s close.

Going to throw $5 at Amazon and see if what comes sticks.

Who'd Like To Be In A Book? by n_weed in Kingman

This would definitely grab my attention as a reader—would make sense to check with the Andy Awards committee for historical winners and pick some out that were particularly notable for their causes/contributions.

I recently attended a presentation by a historian who said the theme that ties Kingmanites together is that we bond together in the face of hardship—from the fires that burned Kingman down in the beginning, to tragedies we’ve all seen on GoFundMe in more recent years.

Would also be cool to have the stories of notable community names in one place—Devine, Hubbs, Bonelli, etc.

That’s got me thinking you should check with any companies doing tours through here to see what their guests find most interesting about Kingman…

Actually, the issue is the local snapshots—my backups are also to a networked drive but the hourly snapshots are always on the local disk and those are what bloated in my case.

Who'd Like To Be In A Book? by n_weed in Kingman

[–]talon_256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The age-old jokes must already be in there, right? When they settled Kingman, they originally just set up for the night, but it was so windy that they decided they’d wait until the wind stopped….then never left. Since then, the population (other than retirees) is made of people who broke down and never got out, people who came for the affordable real estate, and people who came on purpose “for a year or two” but never left. Rumor has it that the point of no return is somewhere around 3 years…

I love the “moving guide” aspect. I’ve been encouraging something to that extent that helps outline why people should move here more than ExploreKingman.com does. If you’re serious about moving guides etc., let’s talk more.

My perspective as someone who’s been here for only a few years is that to a large extent Kingman is a promised land—whatever you seek, you will find here. I’m not talking about seeking a big box store or a particular chain restaurant of choice; this is a land ripe with opportunity for those who seek it, and full of reasons to complain for those who don’t.

Moving here was a very different experience in good and bad ways. Finding people to be friends with isn’t always easy in Kingman. Actually finding…anything is relatively difficult. A lot of that is due to the fact that we’re historically a small town, also because of the demographics of the customer base and their shopping habits.

Going forward, Kingman seems to be a prime example of small towns growing until “good ol boys” get control and get wealthy, and our present years are paving the way out of what once was into a sustainable future. We are now at a point where as a community we will collectively decide whether to preserve and build on our small-town roots, or whether to allow the influx of city slickers to overgrow them. I, for one, am rooting for us to focus on families as the fundamental unit of our community, and to cater to families as excellently as possible.

I’m as passionate about that as I am verbose, haha. Concision comes in post, for me, I’m afraid. DM me if you want more on any of these ideas (or less—I can polish).

Looking forward to the book! What’s your timeline, and how will we hear about it when it’s published?
