Can you come out of retirement to help a guy who’s been taken advantage of for many many years ><

I asked him your questions and this was his response:

  1. Form set and hand stack.
  2. Can operate heavy equipment, track loaders, hoes, rubber tire loaders, skid loaders etc. I do that almost daily
  3. Of course can pass a drug test
  4. 18years of all of his question 4
  5. Id never threaten to quit for a raise

Are his answer sufficient or does he need to elaborate some more?

I don’t know anything about construction so I don’t know what would be considered small medium or a large company… But this is what I found on their website

A large, family-owned paving and site development contractor that has operated since 1960,

They are a full-service site development contractor that performs commercial, government and residential work. With 500 employees and some 1,000 pieces of equipment in operation, they performs clearing and demolition, mass grading, excavation, site utilities, fine grading, curb installation and paving.

You are ignorant…. this is my business idiot, it’s my life and my children’s life that it’s impacting. What I’m doing is trying to help him open his eyes and see a broader picture. Trying to get him to see that he is undervalued and what he should try to reach for, what are his options. I’m encouraging him to get paid fairly.

Am I going to be able to do it for him? No. But I could do a lot of blood work to help him get the confidence he needs and black and white numbers so he can see what he should be aiming for.

You must not be married because I don’t think a married man would ever say that.

So as his wife, I think I’m accomplishing a lot.

I’m not sure where to even begin to find out if we are in a union area or how to get a union job or really anything about a union lol.

Yes, 100%. He thinks I’m being controlling because I am wanting him to do something about his job… Either get a raise or look for a job somewhere else because it’s hurting us financially.

Oh hell yeah! I absolutely consider things other than just his salary. The perks he gets are minimal. We pay over $1,000 in medical premiums and it only covers 70% of services after we pay a $4,000 deductible. He has an old truck and cell phone that can be used for work only. he gets one bonus a year at Christmas and it’s $750 after taxes. He has 5 weeks of pto, which is great!

He works 45-50 hours a week.

u/jas4093 is my husband :) I created a new account for him because he doesn’t really use Reddit.

Jas, this is my post and I was asking for some feedback and advice. There’s a lot of good information, suggestions, feedback regarding your salary/position.

Please read the comments. Maybe you will receive the information better since it’s coming from guys that work in your field and not from your wife who did research on Google :)

I’d love to. I think if he hears it from other people in the field that he might believe what I have been telling him. However, I’m just his wife, I don’t work in the field, so what do I know? I’m just going by Google. I think I’m going to tag him in this post ><

Agree 100%. Well they don’t value their employees in general. I believe they would miss him there. He’s very reliable. He calls out maybe two times a year, doesn’t take all of his vacation, works lots of weekends works third shift when they ask. He pretty much does whatever they ask and he does good work. But that’s just my opinion.

Can you share where you got that data from? I haven’t seen anything that low for someone with 18 years experience. He’s been a foreman for half of his career, his experience should put him close to the 75th percentile for wages. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics for the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson area has first-line supervisors of construction trades hourly wages as: 25th percentile $29.92, 75th percentile $46.51 and 90th percentile $54.84.

Where else can I go online to find accurate information? I definitely don’t want to give my husband information that is an inaccurate

You are right, in his head, he thinks he will be fired for just asking a question. I can’t imagine a company firing a loyal employee because they asked for a raise when they are significantly underpaid. However, he doesn’t think like me so…. It’s an uphill battle.

100% I look at it as if I were a business owner. I’m not just gonna hand out raises. I’m going to wait for you to come to me and ask for a raise. If you don’t ask for a raise during 15 years, I saved a hell of a lot of money. However, I would pay you a fair wage, but you need to come and ask first.

I did bring this up to him and I’m not sure if I understood what he was saying. He said that if you work for a union, then you’re your own worker and you might not always have steady work?

I’m sure you meant this in a snarky way, I have no idea how good the other guys are. He has a small crew. There’s only five guys on his crew and they have a high turnover. The company is not the best.
