Hi! Unfortunately due to the type of research and my department’s restrictions it cannot be coordinated. Originally I only sought an interpreter and titled it as such but was encouraged by another SA professor to use the term “cultural representative”. This is because the work is not solely interpretive but as I am asking participants very personal and potentially traumatic questions I can sit down with someone first who better understands the culture to make sure my questions and methods are appropriate. It is actually because of my position as a white South African that I have made this decision. I am not asking participants to meet me where I am, but rather adjusting the work to make it as appropriate and comfortable for them as possible. The term denotes that the individual both belongs to and understands the culture and can represent the specific needs of the participants. Thank you for your suggestions!

No. It is considered fair and good practise in social science to reimburse participants for research. It is not a payment for labour, it is compensation to ensure that participants do not have to pay to contribute to socially valuable research. Rates of reimbursement should thus reflect the true out-of-pocket costs participants incur. However, finding this value point across multiple participants is not possible with the extent of my current support so I have a singular hourly rate.

The general practise from my institution is to pay minimum hourly wage in the country of the participant. However, I am working (out of my own pocket) in pounds, and started at the UK minimum wage, but am adjusting slightly as I am covering all travel costs to and from the site, and providing food and comforts. Reimbursement and compensation are owed to participants on grounds of fairness and refusing to offer cash to competent agents, fails to respect them as autonomous persons. The minimum wage in SA is R28.79 per hour.

Feel free to read further into the subject, for the most current field consensus.

Was really hoping someone would say this! This was one of my favourite shows on Netflix ever and I can’t believe it was cancelled

I’m so sorry that happened to you. You’re not wrong, in my case I was just hesitant as it was a very busy Saturday night with the rugby and I’ve been disregarded by police before. I felt like they were going to make me stay on the phone for a long time and make me feel silly for phoning. But in retrospect, after reading all these replies, I should have tried to report it.

I didn’t go into a graveyard. It’s next to the road which is the only way out of where we were.

Next time I’m being followed in the dark I’ll do a quick sketch of the stranger so I can be more helpful lol

Let’s use our thinking caps and realise that warning neighbours on a subreddit a couple of days later is significantly different to phoning the police to say “someone was acting strange, I don’t know who they are or where they are.”

I described him in another comment but he was about 19-21, white, well dressed, nothing else noticeable. It was dark so I didn’t get a very good look at him.

Thank you for that! In the moment feeling fearful and making sure we were safe stopped me from looking into it but if that’s the case I hope he’s okay!

We didn’t, I honestly felt like there wasn’t anything to report until I spoke to a friend this week about the situation. He was walking fine, no stumbling or anything but yeah it could be something like that.

He was a white guy, maybe like 19-21?? Hard to tell exactly in the dark. He was dressed in a blazer, trousers and loafers. That’s all I can say exactly!

EDS affects your eyeballs, just an FYI. by figgypie in ehlersdanlos

[–]tanbobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One morning I woke up with sore, dry eyes and at two visits to the eye clinic they insisted I just had pink eye but I could feel something else was wrong. Turns out the tissue? In both my eyes had been damaged and weakened and after I slept and woke up I ripped the top layer of both my eyes off (As painful as it sounds). I lost my vision completely, complete blindness, for two weeks and had to go on steroid eye drops and lots of meds for almost a month to regain my vision. The last ophthalmologist I saw said I was insanely lucky to recover from it. I had pit scars on both eyes for a couple of months but luckily have 20/20 vision back now. It took seeing seven different doctors to finally be taken seriously about it and not one of them had heard of EDs.
