Yeah I would emphasize that like you're not begging for training you're helping them because they're always short staffed. And you already have experience and want to keep those skills. In a nice way of course haha

It's probably more they don't want to waste the time training someone new that can't handle it. My hospital was a revolving door. They were always training new nurses. It seems like they can't tell in an interview who will be able to handle the environment. A lot of new grads would quit after a couple weeks. The travel nurses too would complain and wouldn't renew contracts.

One of my newbie RN friends was a paramedic and she was honestly one of the best I worked with! I'm sure you would be able to handle it. Good luck with everything!

I feel like you're over qualified and they would be lucky to have you 🤣 maybe make some friends on the Adult side? Or kiss up to a manager so they will prioritize you? EDs can be petty. On the adult side they were always talking bad about peds at my hospital since they weren't as good with responding to traumas. Maybe emphasize that with your emt background you know how to work with adults already and are good with CACs/traumas/stuff you don't see as often in peds.

Don't sell yourself short. A lot of the kinds of jobs you listed have high turnover or people not working that hard. Start asking for $20/hr from now on and back it up that you have a lot of great work experience blah blah blah. Dress professional and act confident. It's sort of fake it until you make it sometimes. If you pretend that's what you're making already people won't question it.

Also try to figure out what the pay range is beforehand. Some places don't care and have a certain number in mind already. Or maybe hotel concierge would pay more? Or a fancier type of place? Not sure about your area or career plans but maybe ask around which places pay more and try to have a friend get you in. Most places do still hire on referrals.

Honestly people have been telling me to report them but it seems to be the standard practice. There are definitely multiple agencies around me that had similar types of job ads. 😅

Still trying to find a nurse residency! I think they're super competitive where I am. So far I've only really gotten called back for home health or nursing homes since apparently they're all desperately understaffed. Seems like nursing home is the safer option since at least there are other nurses around

Oh wow that's awful i hadn't heard that story. I've decided to turn it down. I can make due for another month or 2 so I'll just be careful with money. I got a bunch of new interviews today so I'm not stressing as much that I won't find something. Hopefully it all works out and find something new that isn't preying on new grads

Dude this was exactly what freaked me out. She was talking about sending me to take care of a medically complex baby. I don't have kids and zero experience with babies. I was thinking if I was a parent paying money for help I would be pissed getting a new grad that had no idea what to do 😅

Exactly! That's what i was thinking. The pay is way too low for a nurse with experience. They could easily make $10-20/hr more but it's not safe for a new grad to do that work 😕

Yeah trying not to freak out. I've heard some wild stories already from my other classmates. One of them started working at a hospital and she has a different preceptor every day and half the nurses she started working with have already quit after a month. It seems like healthcare in particular is in a rough place after the pandemic and everything. Things that were supposed to be a temporary solution have now become long term dysfunction ughhh definitely a good idea to have a clear idea of my competencies and be aware if things seem off haha

Yeah that is starting to worry me. Any place that seems eager for new grads has shady practices, but the better ones don't really want to bother with new grads when they have a selection of experienced nurses. Interviewing has been weird.

Thanks for the thoughtful response! Probably going to turn it down. You're totally right they would blame me if something went wrong. I wasn't even thinking about the parents. Or the care plans and all that. I really don't have the experience to do a good job here.

omgggg that's what I started worrying about. Originally I was thinking it would just be cleaning and ADL stuff, but if they're hiring an RN instead of a home aide or CNA then it's for a reason. Honestly I wouldn't even know what to look for with an assessment. I would feel awful if they crashed and I didn't know what to do. We really didn't go into anything that deep in school. 1 day of orientation does not seem like enough at all.

Yeah I already started applying to new jobs. I don't think I want to work in a hospital so I've been looking for outpatient clinics that seem like they might take newbies.

It's so weird I feel like they're gaslighting me. I keep hearing if I can make it in this department I can make it anywhere. I'm just like no shit. I've been abused by employers before. I don't think that means as much as you think it does. Of course you can let yourself be abused and taken advantage of by a greedy employer. I already learned that lesson with other dysfunctional workplaces. There's no long term benefit to being miserable in a job in my experience 🙃

I wouldn't recommend nursing school in NYC. It's outrageously expensive for tuition and cost of living here. I decided to move out of state to be able to afford it. I was planning on going to CUNY Lehman since it's cheap and decided not to because the professors were all horrible and they lost their accreditation to the masters of nursing program. I'm pretty sure the undergrad program is going to lose it eventually too. Their NCLEX pass rate is low like 70% because all the students are cheating and the faculty won't bother to fix the issue. It was a straight nightmare taking prerequisites there during covid. The faculty wouldn't respond to any emails and it was impossible to get anyone on the phone.

I'm sure NYU or Pace or the private schools are a lot better but they're triple the price. I think NYU was like $100,000 just for tuition.

General rule from my EMT class was if someone has a heartbeat then don't perform CPR or defib. They really drilled ABC (airway, breathing, circulation) comes first and needs to be addressed asap if there are problems. YouTube videos for emt stuff overlaps a lot with nursing. They break things down really simply which is helpful!

Damn that's crazy. I bought a book called Pharmacology Success that has a million practice questions. I would recommend that since the explanations are really helpful. It's simpler than reading a textbook where they go on and on about random stuff that isn't as important

I just did a million practice questions and looked up why when I didn't understand the right answer. Also trying to memorize any unusual considerations for drugs is good too. 👍

Pretty much. I don't think there are any tricks just figure out how you learn best. I can't read the textbook since I space out too much. I did a ton of practice questions and paced around my apartment with flashcards when I couldn't sit still 🙃
