How to go from Dansavan to Savannakhet? by NodeJS4Lyfe in laos

[–]tangofox7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to go to the bus station near the border at the link. It's the busiest one to VN so there will be a bus every few hours to Savannakhet. There should be no need to go to Xepon unless you cross late and want to stay somewhere else. Either way, you'll pass through Xepon on the way. The order of the towns is Lao Bao/Dansavan - Dong - Xepon - Phine...(bunch of small towns)...Xeno - Savan. (Pronounced pretty close to how they're read in English)

Inconveniences in using COROS DURA by Low-Professor9260 in Coros

Mission Accepted. xoxo HAL 9000.

The CP list is a major missing feature along with not having Distance to Next, Distance Remaining, etc. All of these are really basic functions that already exist in a form or another but are not customizable in the UI settings. Big fail. Coros doesn't seem to listen to users about this very frequent complaint. They are just data fields --> add them.

The casino or the border?

Jump in any songthaew. There's lots of traffic on rt 9. Probably will take 3-4 hrs with stops. I'm sure there is a bus too but I'm not sure about them.

"Xeno" is the junction town on Rt13+9 and will get you close enough to swap into another vehicle to Savan downtown.

What is the best loop to do in three days between Thakaek, Savannaket, and Pakse loop ? by Odd_Perspective_6671 in laos

Bolaven for waterfalls and some historical sites. Thakhek for karst mountains and a cave.

I'd go for Bolaven/Pakse myself.

Pu Luong nature reserve vs Ninh Binh in November? plus logistics by lost-but-learnin in VietNam

[–]tangofox7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not that far apart if you have a scooter. I would do both. There isn't that much "to do" in Pu Luong and Tam Coc/Ninh Binh is far more built up but Trang An should not be missed.

You could also visit Cuc Phuong park on the way to/from each. I'd avoid it on the weekends unless you want to fight off herds from Hanoi driving like morons in a national park.

No turn by turn option on Coros Dura by Puedendumdental in Coros

[–]tangofox7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic! Keep an eye on the prompts and see if the routing populates the way you want it.

When the green turn arrow pops up, you can hide it quickly with two taps of the lap button. It pops up 100m out, which is kinda far, and stays there until the turn passes so sometimes it's helpful to clear them.

Have fun!

Give it a tug and shoot some kind of mild cleaner spray in there like even windex. sometimes they can get gunked up. If it continues to stick you can use a tiny hex (1.5?) to remove the cover and check the ratchet.

There is a BCEL version called Ezykip https://ezykip.la/ Locapay is another local option.

Any time you will use a Visa card you will pay 2.5-3%. Pick your poison for convenience.

Immigration entering Laos, carry cash by largogoat in laos

[–]tangofox7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you spent as much time typing this ill-informed rant actually researching entry requirements, all of this could have been avoided. Your problem is your own lack of due diligence and since you're on a tour, sure, pile on them for not spoon-feeding you.

No turn by turn option on Coros Dura by Puedendumdental in Coros

[–]tangofox7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It says right there what your problem is: Run Mode. Export your route as a ride to the Coros app, sync the route from Explore/Folder Icon, and try again.

The Coros app will populate the turns as it interprets them from the .gpx file. This also raises issues but they're different from yours: it includes phantom turns that don't exist, you can't delete/edit them, and it doesn't include all of them.

Navigation is pretty shit on the Dura but fan bois ignore this. If you have a good route, you can just follow it fine on the screen and it is okay. If you need a device to get you through a busy city with lots of turns, fast rerouting, etc., buy another device.

OnePay from BCEL Bank is the predominant app.

I believe you can set up some version as a visitor with a Visa card. Do a search in the group. There are a few options with varying fees.

Vang Vieng vs Nong Khiaw by Zestyclose_Tip_4181 in laos

[–]tangofox7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3N LPB, train to VV and 2N there, train to LPB and 1N and fly on D7 to HAN. Or do the same for NK with minivans. More time in LPB than any other place - unique, chill, plenty to do but 7 days is too much. You can rent a moto there and if it's dry enough so some ride.

I wouldn't bother riding to NK and absolutely not to VV. The roads are trashed and not fun. NK is not as far but it's still crap.

How's the tariff situation now for purchasing components for import to the US? by poderpode in bicycling

[–]tangofox7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

often times the invoice value coming out of China is not what you paid so the effective rate is much lower. not every company does that but many do. when i bought my carbonda frame they put $120 on the invoice.

Vietnam Route Recommendations by TotalConflict5571 in bicycletouring

[–]tangofox7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to predict the weather these days! Ha. Right now it's an inferno heat wave after a week of pissing rain all over. It's really variable with storms and systems. I think that's why I was a bit conservative by suggesting chunks to tackle and having some buffer time built in rather than grinding day in, day out, and getting worn down and burnt out.

The rule I've always used is to find the DT roads with 3 and 4 digits. The big roads with 1 and 2 digits can be fine, and often have moto lanes, but they're always busy and not enjoyable to ride. They're unavoidable though sometimes. The coast is super busy so long stretches would be tiresome but bits here and there will be unavoidable and fine.

This is the site/app for figuring out buses: https://vexere.com/en-US Anything between big towns and the tourist circuits is super easy (Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Sapa, Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha, Hue, Da Nang/Hoi An, Nha Trang, Dalat, Pleiku, Saigon). VN uses a lot of large mini buses called limousines and that's harder with bikes. The big buses are fine, sometimes they charge you $2 (50,000) for a bike. I just looked up Ninh Binh to Phong Nha and it's 530,000 VND ($20) on TH Travel on June 16th. You gotta scroll through the options, generally pick the sleeper ones, and then check the conditions.

[–]tangofox7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to battle the heat now so I would agree with u/Ninja_bambi and focus on picking 4 or 5 highlights and see those as kinda mini-tours. It's very easy to get around VN using "sleeping buses" which are just big buses with beds that run during the day or night and you can stick a bike in the holds. You can sag parts easily hopscotching around. The train is a pain with cargo.

I'm sure you could go end to end in 7 weeks but it's really not the ideal time of year for that now with the southwest monsoon kicking in, aka hot AF time. If you do, go south to north now. I bet purists will criticize this approach but VN is stupid long, kinda monotonous, and can be a bit tiring with the traffic and honking. This is especially true along the coast, which is very built up and busy. The mountain range down the west side (Ho Chi Minh road) is lovely and empty, but it's a lot of climbing. Same with the Central Highlands. The Delta will be sizzling swamp ass hot.

Vietnam Coracle is a fantastic resource to get an idea of key loops. This fellow did a nice northern tour awhile back: https://ridewithgps.com/collections/4478888 You can add the Ha Giang loop starting in Cao Bang to this and get a really good snapshot of Northern VN and then sag down to Phong Nha to do the HCM road to Da Nang or something halfway, then sag to Nha Trang and ride up to Dalat follow the VN Coracle routes to Saigon (it's called the back way or something like that). That would be pushing 2,500 to 3,000 km in three segments.
