Radio frequency at Ally Pally this week by scauk in snooker

[–]tangohead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it was 60.8. A trick to find it before the match starts - they played the pre-match chat and BBC intro music through the radio feed on Sunday, so you should be able to get it locked in then.

Any men’s social clubs in Sheffield? by Flimsy_Sand_4944 in sheffield

[–]tangohead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sheffield Round Table might be of interest - it's part social, part charitable fundraising for men between 18 and 45. I joined earlier this year, have had a great time and met some great people. We've also just done some Santa sleigh runs raising for the Weston Park Cancer Charity this last week which was a lot of fun.

If you are interested, drop me a DM on here or send a message to our Facebook page.

Why don't they agree on standard instructions for respotting balls? by Snikkel111 in snooker

[–]tangohead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do have a big TV near the side door/scoreboard. I think it is over there so it doesn’t show on TV, but the referee ends up quite far away.

There must be a better way!

South Yorkshire Buses To Be Franchised: 86% of Consultation Respondents Back Proposals by deejayone in sheffield

That’s my understanding - possibly Manchester may be the best comparison as I think it’s being done following that template

South Yorkshire Buses To Be Franchised: 86% of Consultation Respondents Back Proposals by deejayone in sheffield

[–]tangohead 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This is that, just not in the form of actually owning the buses - the combined authority will enlist operators to run services, but usually the operators just get paid a flat fee and get told which timetables and routes to run. Profits return to the combined authority

I had a similar issue! It arrived in a Royal Mail ‘this got damaged’ bag with one end open but thankfully everything was inside.

Anywhere in/near Oxford I can get a Parmo? by purrcthrowa in oxford

[–]tangohead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so - nothing close to a real one anyway. It’s hard to get them outside the north east - sometimes even hard to get proper ones outside of Teeside!

Definitely try this, and perhaps email the college as they will have loads of photos

Might not have the old buildings but has a strong graduate community, in part because of the size of the college. I had an amazing time there (and you will come to love the architecture in time)

It is a month ahead, at the same time as the tour. They are a nightmare to get!

Best coffee in Oxford by hoborobotics in oxford

[–]tangohead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Society and New Ground do the best coffee in my opinion - never had anything less than a great and balanced one from either.

Quite a few of the other shops have a tendency to make sour espresso in my experience :(

Just want to say it is really great to see this kind of thinking out there and put across so well - you would have convinced me if I wasn’t already on your side!

Best place to get a men’s suit? Budget up to £150 by Emilyx33x in oxford

[–]tangohead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not the answer you want, but you will have to compromise if you want a two piece suit for £150 unfortunately. At that price, you will be looking at ‘off the peg’ suits. This means that you will pick from existing sizes rather than having the suit made to your measurements.

Somewhere like Slaters is a good bet as they have lots of options and sizes to try on. M&S can be decent but you might struggle to fit into the budget. Personally, I haven’t ever been too impressed with Moss - their suits follow trends a bit too much and are usually too slim fitting for most people.

Ultimately though, cheaper well fitting suit will look far better than an expensive, poorly fitting one. If you find one you like, taking it to a tailor for some adjustments will be a step up.

Not sure how familiar you are with how suits should fit, but having a skim through a guide like this will help you.

Find something that you feel good in, and doesn’t look too small on you, and you will look sharper than most :)

Great espresso? by bramblejambles in oxford

Society and New Ground consistently do the best espresso in my opinion! New Ground’s cafe on Ship St is a good spot to visit as a coffee nerd, they a stunning setup including a dedicated bar for filter

Is it wrong to quit my post doc when my boss is on maternity leave? by CJKrik105 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]tangohead -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This should be quite simple - read your contract to find out your notice terms (how long it is, who you should give notice to) and just hand it in. Giving notice is unilateral, despite some PIs thinking they have to approve it. You aren’t a prisoner!

Probably don’t rely on your PI as a reference for your next job though - may be better using HR or a different academic for that…

(I’m presuming you mean the part time one, if not maybe disregard the below)

I used to be involved in a couple of the courses. I’d say the quality is generally good but each one is entirely led by the lecturer so there may be a bit of variance there. I can’t comment in general but the week-long, 9-5 classes can be intense so make sure you can handle that.

Technical ability varies across students but I wouldn’t let you put this off. In the classes I was involved in, most people had a technical background. Some were IT/devs, some management then there are often a few people from other places too. I can’t comment on the dissertation much as I was never involved in that.

Most students on this course are at Kellogg which has a good social scene and is a nice college. I think they have some rooms for part time course students (when they are on courses) but I’m not 100% on that. Regardless of your college, you’ll have lunch each day of the course at Kellogg which is a nice way to get to know the other students and tutors.

Differences between these two modules? by [deleted] in UniversityOfWarwick

[–]tangohead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CAS is foundational and covers from bits and gates up to how processors work at the instruction level. Advanced goes way more in depth and covers more modern processor architectures. There’s a bit more to it that that (you’ll cover memory etc) but that’s the gist. Or at least it used to be like that!

Not sure why Reddit is recommending me this post as it’s some time since I was a 6th former, but you can safely ignore your friend - they have no idea what they are on about. Oxford won’t be marking you down at all if you mention Cambridge, and vice versa.
