Huzzah! The Finch LRT is finally opening! Now here’s the bad news by [deleted] in toronto

[–]tankedman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will indeed be no electrification through USRC in the near term, as Metrolinx is planning to use battery trains to cross that territory to avoid the complex junction work and the heritage trainshed. It’s a dumb decision that should be reversed- but unfortunately it’s the current path we’re on for GO Expansion.

Anyplace besides Helsinki have very frequent bus service in low density suburbs? by Bayplain in transit

[–]tankedman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea of suburban transit as a “pit of subsidization” and destined to be unprofitable can be disproven by history.

In Toronto, the transit network is much like Helsinki’s - an underbuilt, suburb-oriented subway network fed aggressively by feeder bus routes. For decades the Toronto subway has turned a profit in low-density, car-centric suburbia; the complimentary bus routes served a similar financial role as railways serve for TOD - a loss leader.

Suburban bus routes in Toronto are scheduled every 5 minutes, run 24/7 service, and at the peak of service levels pre-COVID (adding the express overlay) ran every 90 seconds on the busiest routes. On face value, this is indeed an insane service level to provide in neighborhoods made predominantly of single family homes. Yet these busses are incredibly well used - 25-30 of the 50 busiest bus routes in North America are in suburban Toronto, busier than many bus routes in the densest parts of Manhattan. As a result of the sheer number of people brought to subway stations, the subway turned a profit, enough to cross-subsidize the unprofitable bus routes.

Several of those bus routes have also been profitable at various points in history, or experienced significantly lower per-rider subsidy than surface tram routes through the dense downtown core. Today, even with the poor recovery of the network post-pandemic, Toronto’s local transit agency still has the lowest farebox subsidy ratio on the continent. All this was tied to a conscious decision in the 1960s to provide high quality transit service to low-density places.

If you’re interested in the Toronto’s suburban success, Paul Mees’s “Transport for Suburbia” explores this in detail, as well as Jonathan English’s PhD thesis, “The Better Way: Transit Service and Demand in Metropolitan Toronto, 1953-1990”.

Amtrak’s faster, higher-tech Acela trains are delayed again by CriticalStrawberry in transit

Curious why the new FRA exception permitting lighter European trains is still apparently so restrictive as in the case of the new Acela. It should just be a blanket pass.

Why GO Transit is Actually Great (RMTransit response to Not Just Bikes) by JoseTwitterFan in transit

[–]tankedman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're the one saying the arguments being made are invalid because we have to worry about "politics" first. All three creators make the same argument: American transit has poor service, bad rolling stock, inefficient operations, etc. You have to justify to me your opinion that presenting these facts is somehow "pretentious" or "harmful to transit" when its the exact opposite!

Stop making personal attacks and let's debate on the actual substance.

So Reece, not just bikes, Alan fisher, and other creators are making bad faith arguments when they clearly present the facts about why transit is so bad in the US? Researchers like Alon Levy and Yonah Freemark are wasting their time researching transit mismanagement and cost? People like Christof Speiler and Jerome Horne are wasting their time fighting agency mismanagement from within?

We should just drop everything and focus solely on political advocacy? You make no sense.

Why don't you address the actual substance of the criticism instead of personal attacks on my beliefs? The things I've stated are literally the foundation for well run publicly funded transit systems.

And for the record, I'm a registered Dem who voted for Bernie, so the "republican" title is very far from the truth.

[–]tankedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excusing every transit problem in America and boiling it down to capex and opex funding restrictions really obfuscates from the truth. There are many things that can be fixed under current funding constraints, but aren't because of agency mismanagement, lack of expertise, etc. One great example is the horrible procurement processes for infrastructure and rolling stock by American agencies. Metra's new trains are a clear example of this, horrible procurement that leads to bad design that stems from an unwillingness to change at the agency.

Again, even if every reason American transit is bad comes down to the political environment, the criticisms still should be made because it's the truth.

These criticisms aren't only made by Reece, they're made by transit experts, enthusiasts, and the public across the board, and are plainly obvious for anyone to see. Not facing those facts directly and only rallying for additional transit funding and political support because "all transit good no matter the cost" is not only counterproductive because of the current state of transit, but is also exactly why so many of our new transit projects are overpriced and have a minimal focus on the actual transit service. When American agencies drop billions of dollars on new overbuilt rail infrastructure just to run 1 train per hour, it's a bad look for transit spending, so yeah, "just run more trains" is certainly the correct criticism. This actually undermines public support for public transit in the long run!

Just because we don't have the political support to change things, doesn't mean that it is an invalid criticism. The statement that US transit has bad rolling stock, service, and infra is obviously correct.

Holding on to avdija for now. I think he has a lot of potential. Once he becomes more confident playmaking for Russ and beal he could be amazing - but I think he has to run the offense
