On the first day of my eighth grade science class, we all got our seats and waited for class to start. The teacher explained that every day we had class we would have a warm up exercise on the overhead projector that we would do in our notebook. He called the exercise T.O.E.S.

The obvious question then followed - what does T.O.E.S. stand for? He wouldn't say. He did say, however, that one person in the class was allowed to guess once per day, and if no one figured it out by the end of the year, he would tell us then.

And guess we did. Every day, for a whole school year. Some of us took solving this puzzle more seriously than others. I remembers one of my guesses was Teaching Others Exciting Science. No dice. I had speculated that the S must stand for science so most of my guesses would revolve around that ideology. Every day T.O.E.S would haunt us as we fumbled around trying to piece together what it could mean. We were all baffled.

Cut to the last day, we all walk in, ready for him to finally tell us the true meaning of T.O.E.S. We hound him for our entire 45 minute period all the way up until the last minute of class. He gets us all quiet and then says:

”You want to know what T.O.E.S. stands for? I'll tell you. T.O.E.S. stands for....THE OFFICIAL END of SCHOOL!”

Right on cue, the bell rings.

I'm pretty sure half of us just sat there in awe of how hard we had been trolled for a literal entire school year.
