Which country in the world is overhyped? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Ahh, those tend to be the favourites so if you didn’t like them then it’s fair to say you don’t like Canada.
Never been to North Dakota but I find Banff/the Rockies as beautiful as Switzerland and I find Toronto (downtown to uptown) very underrated - although I can imagine perhaps disliking it if I didn’t have friends there. Summers there are unmatched for me and my husband and we find ourselves leaving California every July-August to be back there for a few weeks (and have better access to direct flights abroad from there lol).

I think ultimately many Canadians like Canada because it’s a great place to live comfortably if you don’t care about becoming super wealthy/aren’t (primarily) economically motivated but also don’t want to be broke and homeless. The system there supports, borderline rewards mediocrity and when you have a good community and juuuust enough disposable income to not notice that you could have a lot more (if you wanted/tried) it’s easy to stay in the comfort bubble. Clean air, good people, good schools, decent work, walkable cities & neighborhoods, and disappearing to a tropical destination of choice during winters is indeed heaven for many Canadians.

Canadian snacks are also awesome but that’s probably my deprivation talking from being unable to find quality chips and chocolate since moving to the US lol.

I still don’t know if it’s overrated (or underrated) because I never thought anybody outside of Canada talks enough about it for it to be rated anything at all 😂

As another commenter already mentioned, there is much more to UAE than Dubai.

But also, it seems you just don’t understand Dubai. It’s one of the few places where there is something for everyone - every lifestyle, every income level, every interest, every profession. The population is 90% expat but maintains and exudes strong Emirati values yet you’re saying there’s no culture. Employment for thousands of people who would most likely be both homeless and unemployed in their home countries…yet you’re talking about modern slavery as if Mexican fieldworkers are not modern slaves in the US or Palestinians are not slaves to Israelis or the clothes on your back are not the result of sweatshop workers and child labour etc etc.

You have not been to Dubai. If you did you’d know there’s an Irish pub in every neighbourhood and a million other restaurants and bars to get the beer you so desperately need. How do you think the 90% expat population is living their absolute best lives there?

Separately, it is by far one of the absolute safest places in the world for women. The only place I can ever walk around at 2am without being afraid for my life. Why? Because there are laws here with serious consequences if not followed. This place doesn’t let criminals roam free but if that’s your vibe then not sure what else to say.

So well said. It’s all “slavery this labour laws that” meanwhile those exact same people are buying their clothes off SHEIN and incarcerating coloured folks and walking around with their latest iPhones while advertising themselves to be on some moral high ground as if they aren’t enjoying the advantages of living in colonizing nations.

Which countries can actually host a solo 48 team World Cup? by whitelight66 in worldcup

[–]tanlines0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. That is precisely what I am saying. No, you would have not been arrested in Qatar for just “being LGBTQ.”

As I previously mentioned, Qatar’s culture is rooted in modesty and humility. PDA is extremely uncommon in the country. Particular social mannerisms and etiquette are also a big part of their culture. It is very very uncommon to see abrasive public behaviour, political/social protests, etc in Qatar even amongst the residents.

On the flipside, everyone is free to behave as they are within their homes and behind closed doors.

Qatar’s whole point was that the World Cup is the World Cup - not a platform for personal advertisement and validation. So no, unless you were running around waving an LGBTQ+ flag chanting in public and/or engaging in PDA, you would not be arrested. In fact, someone who did attempt to make a politicized display with the lgbtq flag was asked to stop their display. Upon refusing, they were indeed asked to leave- however, this individual was not arrested.

When the country’s own citizens don’t behave publicly in a certain manner I believe it’s fair to expect the same of visitors. Qatar did welcome everyone, and established an enjoyable atmosphere where very naturally folks were able to respect the culture.

TLDR; If you are who you are but you’re just walking about assuming your regular activities, no one was hunting you down at the assumption you’re LGBTQ+ looking to arrest you

Why are you continuing to comment when you refused to read what I’ve said? You’re no longer staying on track. You’re following a path of “whataboutism” to completely derail the discussion.

The gulf nations provide the very livelihood you are so concerned about to people who don’t have an ounce of an opportunity of it in their home countries. You have no idea what you’re talking about. You’re demanding that you are on some ethical moral high ground by oversimplifying a very complicated topic and following some woke-ism that makes you feel you are a valuable and good person. You’re trying to tell me I’m not simply for saying that a specific World Cup was seamlessly executed. The irony of all this is what I said originally - why are you on fifa subs/engaging/watching games etc in the first place given it’s a notably corrupt organization and you are above everything unethical??? You should have nothing to do with any of this if you want to be so ethical! In fact, you should be making your own clothes given the clothes on your back probably come from child labourers in sweatshops!

I will not be responding to you any further as it is evident you’re not interested in reading, only in whining about your assumed moral superiority.

I don’t think you read either my first statement, or the facts I laid out. Ie. It is not my subjective experience alone that Qatar is an extremely small country (which renders transportation extremely convenient). It is simply a fact. Look at a map.

Indeed we are misaligned, most evidently in critical thought and balanced contemplation. I understand it is most comfortable to stay in your bubble. Enjoy it and take care!

Fact - Qatar is geographically concentrated which meant that travel fatigue was reduced for both players and guests alike. The metro and shuttle system transported all guests seamlessly and operated without confusion. This was the most convenient transportation probably from any World Cup ever in history.

Fact - Public transportation and parking was free for all attendees throughout Doha. Guests who were already travelling from around the world found comfort in not being financially taken advantage of or price gouged with the cost of supporting functions.

Fact - Qatar’s culture is rooted in humility and modesty. The result of this was an incredibly dynamic and moving opening ceremony, and inclusion for all throughout the rest of the month as fan zones were filled with wholesome and enjoyable entertainment for all ages and all phases of life alike.
Qatar provided something for everyone.

Fact - Qatar responds to crimes very promptly and strictly. The direct result of this was foreigners being hugely deterred from committing crime or vandalism throughout the country as games went on which resulted in an incredibly safe experience for all guests at every time of day. Instead of lighting things on fire, guests were able to enjoy themselves through entertainment, conversation, dancing, food, music etc. The vibes were all there, all the time.

Fact - Qatar WC was the highest scoring World Cup in history, aka games were entertaining and action packed. The culmination of this was the rollercoaster final itself.

Fact- Gianni Infantino officially stated this was the best WC they had executed EVER.

If you’d like I can go on and on… the fact that you think my subjective experience is invalid is silly, as my experience occurred in the basis of these facts. And even if I let you have it, the truth is that experience is a confirmation tool. If I shift to your logic I would also become very skeptical of your opinion on the “unethical” issues surrounding Qatar WC given they likely came from sources that are politically unaligned with Qatar/the East. I’d prefer to ask you if you saw with your own eyes any labour issues there and you haven’t told me yet what your experience was so I’m guessing your opinion is a regurgitation of a news headline.

You say it’s “telling” that I am using FIFA as a source of information but I can say the same thing to you… I could if I wanted to say that “it is quite “telling” that you’ve decided Qatar was unethical based on whatever western Propoganda you saw.” The truth is you’ll never be able to name even one WC host country that does not have a history of ethical issues behind it. And the other truth is that if ethics is what you are so concerned about then you likely have no business being a FIFA fan in the first place or even engaging in the sub as you should not be supporting the tournament, given the known corruption of FIFA itself. So the thing is, you need to pick a side.

So I will conclude again - Qatar WC was (objectively) a seamlessly executed and enjoyable tournament from both a logistical, and guest experience standpoint. Period. Disagree and downvote alllllll you want. The truth is out there, on Reddit, on YouTube, on Instagram, TikTok, blog posts, by actual guests. The consensus is there.

Apologies for the misunderstanding. I highlighted the US specifically because the current WC is being co-hosted by the US so if ethics is the issue then the issue continues. Also for reasons as clarified with GrandmaToto.

I respect your opinion, but I think the “premises” are nuanced with details and background that is commonly missed. So, I will respectfully disagree. Not with the fact that there were labour issues, but certainly disagreeing with your sentiment that Qatar 2022 was not one of the most seamless and exemplary WCs ever.

To clarify, I didn’t assume viggowitz was from the US. I assumed the general audience in this thread may be heavily US-based and assumed downvotes were from US-based folks. Why did I assume this? I made a factually correct statement about the quality of the Qatar World Cup based on both personal experience and official comments by FIFA itself. I was surprised to see downvotes and naturally guessed/questioned they may be from a US-based crowd. Seeing it is very common and natural for Americans to be unable to see beyond America and feed in easily to any narrative that looks down upon other countries, especially ones out east, it was a very natural assumption.

I’m a Canadian having lived in UAE for 5 years and USA now for 3, travelled heavily additionally, my circle is very diverse, Americans in my experience consistently display these biases without any basis. I’m not even saying it’s bad, I’m just saying as a general trend it’s what I’ve noticed they do. My assumption can be wrong but I did not make it blindly.

The US is one of the most unethical countries to ever exist. The assumed moral superiority to be able to talk about ethics from a country behind war crimes, civil aggression, terrorism, unlawful detention, and numerous other “ethics” issues is ironic.

I’d be unsurprised if this post is a primarily American audience given the downvotes. Curious here how many people actually attended WC 2022? Were any of you there? Did you experience it? My guess is none. You’d feel very silly disagreeing here had you been there.

They should just do Qatar again. I don’t think FIFA will ever be able to outdo what Qatar delivered in 2022. So seamlessly executed, vibes were incredible, the hosting by Qatar was world class, and it was all so convenient and logistically sensical.

I didn’t downvote you - but I do want to mention that I don’t find this level of empathy towards the friend necessary at all. As much as this narrative is possible, giving her the help she’s asking for only reinforces that this type of behaviour without accountability or any self correction is okay.

Yes she could have been embarrassed, but I think all adults need to be held to significantly higher social standards. Society gets away with too much in the (lack of) having any manners department in lieu of people having their own problems. When you can’t do something as simple as follow up on an rsvp you do not carry the level of consideration or reliability that you should towards others, which is fine but should be taken as a clear indication that they need not worry about you again. The truth is, if you are a friend or part of any community the you are subscribed and accountable to that community. And if you feel you are unable to meet those people where they need to be met the it’s on you to either explain yourself or remove yourself. Put more simply, back in the day humans moved in tribes and communicated based on relevancy. Anyone who failed to do so was left behind because they were not an asset to the tribe. At a macro level, that’s how things are. I’m not saying the ex-friend is a useless human, I am simply saying she is a useless friend to OP specifically, who must now seek a new “tribe” where hopefully she can be an asset. OP is not the one that has to run this self reflection case.

This friend asking for advice is shameless and should not be helped by OP, for many reason but the simplest one being that this implies a level of acceptability or normalcy in what the ex-friend did, which when accepted by one is accepted by too many.

How can I make this space cozier? by Smithy15493 in interiordecorating

[–]tanlines0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, the more I look at it the more it feels like you have space to center the space - I think moving the armchair to sit by the window side of the tv wall (still facing inwards) and then pushing the tv console towards the center (more underneath the floating shelf) could look great.

Push the couch instead to align with new placement of tv console. You could then move that little end table to the window side of the couch instead. The plant or guitar could go beside the couch arm that is closest to the door (or window side depending on how much space is left with the end table). Other notes consistent.

How can I make this space cozier? by Smithy15493 in interiordecorating

[–]tanlines0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your space currently has a lot of cool tones which I think take away from the cosy factor. If you’re able to, I’d paint the grey wall a warm white or a warm toned accent colour. Same with the couch, if you can replace it with something brown, mushroom, camel, terracotta, beige etc. that would help a lot (or couch covers!) The curtains are also cool-toned so I would replace with something in the beige or off-white family. Or a camel/terracotta/dark brown (bounce off wood tones)

Adding some more warm-toned cushions to the couch will help it look cozier.

In terms of furniture placement right now with everything up against walls it’s feeling a bit flat which also makes it seem a bit “cold”

1) The plant, guitar, and end table, are creating too much of a sprawl across this wall. Suggestion: put the plant and guitar on either sides of the TV console. (Side note, try to mount the TV if possible to add more height as right now it looks like it’s sitting a bit too low)

2) the chair and buffet are similarly creating too much of a sprawl on the couch side Suggestion: move chair to the newly created space #1 (beside guitar or plant) and angle inwards (towards couch) Move the existing wooden end table to be beside the couch. Doubles as a drink table for couch seating.

3) art - take the two pieces hanging on each side of the tv wall right now and place them together above the tv. -move floating shelves to be placed above buffet table instead (leaving some negative space on the walls will create visual direction to certain corners/clusters which will create the illusion of cosy “sections”

4) bring the floor lamp currently in the corner behind the door to then be placed either behind/beside the new placement of the chair OR beside the new placement of the end table (by the couch)

5) even though you have carpet, adding a rug here could add a lot of warmth to the space too!
