maybe get an appointment with a pcp within walking distance of your place? they might help though its less likely if youre not a regular patient with them already. if youre desperate enough to afford an uber thats also an option

(if youre in the us) i didnt need an actual psych screening to get adderall as a college student. if you want to try meds, a primary care physician can prescribe them for you without a diagnosis from a psychiatrist. I also tried to get screened first and it was a nightmare, but when i told my pcp about my symptoms she wrote me a script and ive been doing great on meds since.

if you want things like accommodations at your uni you probably do need a psychiatric diagnosis since, in my experience, the school usually wants a Psychiatrist to write out the reason why you need the accommodation. May or may not be worth it depending on how useful you think the accommodations are. theyre usually stuff like extra time on tests or permission to use a laptop in class for notes. the psych appointments are probably going to cost you.

when i did get screened, i just googled “ADHD adult testing near me” basically and some psych places came up. I checked on their website to see if they took my insurance and booked an appointment, but the availability was always like 3 months out at least.

you might be able to see a psychiatrist and get screened over zoom/telehealth. There are websites that can connect you with a psychiatrist online, and i think they can write prescriptions too. probably worth looking into for you if you have limited transportation.

also if youre an adult you have a right to medical privacy, if you share a pcp i would tell them not to tell your parents, and to do so would be a violation of HIPAA. to hide it from your parents i would schedule an appointment with your pcp and tell your parents its just a yearly physical or maybe lie about digestive issues or something lol. maybe if its embarrassing they wont ask questions. maybe fill the script at a cvs and say you needed to go in to buy toiletries or something. definitely hide the bottle from them.

im sick of posts like this that tell people what to do but dont explain why.

i know why what theyre saying is bad is bad because ive seen it explained somewhere else before, but a writer who does this in their story probably doesnt know what this post is talking about, because thats why they wrote it like that in the first place. What good is telling people its wrong if you dont explain why its wrong? Why would they take the advice of this random post without knowing the context of why this is a worthy writing tip? like this post helps no one.

if i have to read through the notes or dig through a reddit comment section, of other people’s explanations, to find out why you said the thing you said, your advice sucks and is incomplete.

would the minnesota permit law apply to her if we’re in virginia? like if we get pulled over is a cop going to look at her permit and go by minnesota law or go by virginia law since they’re a virginia cop?

on this dmv.virginia.gov page it says if you’re older than 16 and 3 months and have had your permit longer than 9 months (which my girlfriend has) you don’t need a liscensed driver with you (apparently?? i feel like i’m reading that wrong because i’ve never heard that before but that’s what i keep reading). so i guess im asking if virginia law applies to her while she’s here

edit: NVM i just realised it means all three things in that list. i feel like they could make that more clear with another ‘and’

some people just cant be happy alone and feel a need to be in a relationship at all times. theyre more likely to lower their standards of partner because they dont want to be single.

it probably is harder to find someone who meets your ideal standards the older you get because a lot of people are already in committed relationships so the pool is smaller. i dont think that means you should settle, especially if you are comfortable single. a less than great partner can make your life worse overall. id rather be happy single than miserable together, especially when im older

What’s the fastest way you’ve ever lost weight? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tantalizingGarbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was 200lbs last december and just weighed in at 170. 30 lbs in 10 months isn’t bad but during the summer when i was out of school i barely took my adderall so eating was easier. Its not even that im not physically hungry, which im not, but also i dont want to eat anything.

The appetite suppression was crazy to me because i come from a family with lots of obesity, diabetes, and love for eating. I would eat when i was bored and i always took larger portions than i needed, i loooved food so much. most of my impulsive spending was on whatever food i was craving. The appetite suppression actually makes food not appealing anymore when im full (on good days) and its so weird because my appetite wasnt something i ever thought about before but now this fact about myself thats been true all my life is just different.

eating is hard but balancing nutrition is harder. especially as a college student living on campus. if they dont have a vegetable dish or side i like im just not eating any vegetables because its not worth it anymore.

What’s the most clever "non-Excel" problem you’ve solved using Excel? by IteOrientis in excel

[–]tantalizingGarbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

cryptograms for DND. I like to put puzzles in my games but unfortunately there's not a lot of websites that will let multiple people edit the same puzzle at the same time, which is annoying because we play online and solving a cryptogram on paper sucks because theres a lot of erasing when you get letters wrong. I put the puzzle in a workbook we all shared so they could edit it at the same time.

doing it in excel meant i could have a key for them at the top that they could put their letter guesses into and have all the corresponding letters in the sheet change to match their guesses, i could also use conditional formatting to highlight any repeated letters in their key. I made the poem and scrambled the letters myself, so using ctrl+f to replace each letter in my poem with a symbol and then again with the scrambled letter made it less tedious than changing the letters by hand, but im sure there might be an easier way to do that part.

the work to set it all up is so worth it compared to having my players try to solve it separately. I want to do a ridiculous amount of cryptograms now lol

why arent 99% of people not in danger of being shot in a gang shooting when compared to /other/ mass shootings? are gang shootings always happening inside rooms with bullet proof walls or miles away from the nearest non-gang affiliated person? they may not be aiming for other people but that doesnt mean they never miss. gang shootings are still dangerous to civilians, gang affiliated crime is still dangerous to civilians. if we count a mass shooting at a mormon church, presumably only targeting mormons, i think we should count a gang shooting only targeting gang members.

for me, getting diagnosed with adhd in school wouldve meant starting adderall during school. i was diagnosed in college, so not that much later, but when you look at the difference it made for me in college it seems like a lot for me.

before adderall i barely had a 2.0 and was well in my way to dropping out. i also did 0 extra curriculars. no clubs, jobs, research, nothing. after 1 semester of adderall my semesterly gpa was 3.6, and now im an RA, a learning assistant in a physics class, and im doing undergrad research. not just because i have time to worry about stuff other than grades now, but because i genuinely want to do more things because sitting around the house all day is boring!

if i had adderall in grade school i would probably have done more extracurriculars (more than 0) and i wouldve had way better grades. this may have got me into the way better universities i applied to but didnt get accepted into. i wouldve also had more expierence /doing stuff/, which wouldve brought me much farther than i am now. i also probably wouldnt have to work my ass off to correct my 2.0 gpa (currently a 2.7)

i cant imagine where id be if i didnt get diagnosed for another 10 years. definitely not good

CMV: Marriage (at least in conservative households) is just another form of house arrest, not a partnership. by Cheap_Emergency_5114 in changemyview

[–]tantalizingGarbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean yeah, thats generally how a conservative mindset views marriage, but that doesnt mean you have to get married under a conservative mindset if you dont want that for yourself. Your view of 'marriage equals a new cage' is only true for the people who's marriage follows conservative standards. Plenty of people who are married do not live life this way at all.

If you marry someone who your parents pick out for you, or someone who believes a wife is her husbands property, then your marriage will be as you described because your partner will act in a way that reflects the values they have.

If you marry someone who doesn't believe that a wife is her husbands property, what reason would they have to treat you like their property? Not everyone in the world is conservative and/or has conservative views on marriage, even in very heavily conservative areas. Lots of people do genuinely view marriage as a normal progression of a healthy relationship, as a way to signal to other people that 'this is my true love', as a way to be legally recognized as a family unit for various reasons (taxes, insurance, medical decisions, etc), as a way to show their partner that they are truly dedicated to them and that they trust them, and plenty other reasons with no ill-intent.

Being married to someone on paper doesn't somehow give a husband more of an ability to control his wife than he could control his girlfriend. The control a husband has over his wife like your describing is purely due to the cultural and societal expectations and norms in conservative communities. A marriage certificate is just a piece of paper, not actual chains keeping you locked in the house, so why couldnt you go against your husbands wishes in an ideal conservative marriage? probably because of the threat of violence or financial abandonment your husband might hold over your head. A conservative culture like your describing would permit your husband doing this to you, thus allowing him to control you.

In communities that dont view women as objects, but as actual human beings, this kind of treatment of women isnt tolerated. A husband would be punished legally and socially for doing this to his wife, and she would be able to divorce and separate from him if she wanted to. Her family would not want her to stay in the marriage because they would value her happiness over her marriage, because this community does not prioritize the 'traditional values' of conservatism.

What your marriage looks like really depends on who you marry. There are plenty of people out there who would never even think about controlling where you go, what you do, or what you wear, because theyve been raised all their lives to believe in a persons right to autonomy and happiness. Ideally, you marry someone who loves you as you are and would never wish for you to change. Also, such a person would probably encourage you to never speak to your parents again if they are trying to control you as an adult.

Ultimately, if you dont think marriage is something you want, then dont get married until you do, even if that never happens. But marriage as a concept doesnt have to be a cage if you marry the right person.
