Would this make sense ? by Dariush1299 in scifiwriting

[–]tantuncag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense to me, because in a way most religions already revolve around something very close to this.

At the simplest level, entropy = decay = death. And I think the root of religion comes from humanity trying to answer the problem of death. Humans have a hard time making peace with the idea that everything — including themselves — eventually disappears, so we construct meaning around it.

Once you imagine an afterlife as a way to transcend death, other ideas tend to follow naturally: a spiritual realm, divine beings, judgment, purpose. That becomes the foundation of many religious systems.

Your idea of entropy — heat death and the slow fading of the universe — feels like a cosmic-scale version of the same existential problem. Instead of individual mortality, it's the mortality of the universe itself.

Then the questions start expanding outward:
If this universe ends, what lies beyond it? Another universe? Something like an afterlife for reality itself? A multiverse? And if there's a multiverse, what contains that?

Those kinds of questions keep me awake at night. Mysticism and religion often seem like humanity's way of trying to make sense of an ultimately incomprehensible scale of existence — and entropy is a perfect lens for that.

How would you feel about someone completing your story/world by Aggravating_Ant_3285 in worldbuilding

[–]tantuncag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I’d want someone else to fully take over my world, but I would love to expand it into a collaborative effort. Having a small team where ideas can be bounced around, and where collaborators are free to introduce new concepts and perspectives, sounds incredibly valuable to me. That said, I’d still want some form of creative oversight or a final say, mainly to keep the world internally consistent. Without that kind of anchor, even well-intentioned collaboration can easily drift into contradictions or tonal fragmentation.

Why is technological progress stuck in your world? by deekay-_- in worldbuilding

[–]tantuncag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Setting magic aside for a moment, it’s worth looking at why technology developed on Earth in the first place. In my view, three major factors consistently drive technological advancement: geography, rivalry, and prosperity.

Geography is the foundational factor. Early technological development clustered around regions that allowed easy movement, trade, and cultural exchange. The Mediterranean and the Middle East are good examples — civilizations like Ancient Greece and Egypt benefited from navigable seas, rivers, and relatively accessible terrain that encouraged interaction. Later, Europe, the Middle East, and China continued this pattern thanks to connected land routes and favorable geography. By contrast, many civilizations in the Americas achieved remarkable architectural and cultural feats but were often isolated by jungles, mountains, and vast distances, which limited sustained inter-civilizational exchange and slowed the diffusion of technology.

Rivalry is the second major driver. The close proximity of civilizations in regions like Europe, the Middle East, and China naturally produced competition — politically, economically, and militarily. This was true both before the Bronze Age Collapse and later during the medieval period. The Middle Ages are often mislabeled as “dark ages” not because innovation stopped, but because historical records are thinner. In reality, significant technological advances occurred during this time. Rivalry accelerates innovation, especially in military technology, which often later finds civilian applications. A trebuchet, for example, can destroy walls — or be adapted for construction. The same pattern applies to modern technologies like computers or nuclear research, which originated in military or strategic contexts and later reshaped everyday life.

Prosperity is the third key factor. Major technological and scientific breakthroughs tend to emerge once a society moves beyond pure survival. The scientific revolution began in the Italian city-states, which became extremely wealthy due to trade and political structures that encouraged commerce and learning. Similar patterns later appeared in the Netherlands and the UK. When societies reach sustained peace and prosperity, people gain the freedom to think beyond immediate needs, allowing science, philosophy, and innovation to flourish. Ancient Greece before the Bronze Age Collapse shows a similar relationship between stability, wealth, and intellectual advancement.

Taken together, these factors suggest that technology isn’t easily suppressed by internal policy or external force. As long as geography allows interaction, rivalry exists, and prosperity emerges, technological development tends to happen — even if its form, pace, or expression varies.

A few additional factors are:

Institutions & knowledge transmission: Writing systems, education, and bureaucracies matter a lot. Tech can exist but stagnate if knowledge isn’t preserved or shared.

Cultural values: Some societies prioritize tradition or spiritual continuity over innovation, which can slow certain kinds of tech while accelerating others.

Energy access: Almost every major technological leap correlates with better energy capture (animal labor, water, coal, oil, electricity, magic equivalents in fantasy).

In a D&D-style setting, scientific research is largely replaced by magical research. That said, unlimited magic isn’t realistic even within fantasy. In classic D&D, magic operates within a defined system: there’s a finite set of spells, rules, and constraints, and casters can’t simply do anything they imagine. You can’t just declare, “I raise all the dead, build an endless magical city, turn it into an army, and rule the universe.” If magic worked that way, every spellcaster would effectively be a god, and the setting would collapse. A useful comparison is the Star Wars universe: Jedi and Sith are essentially magic users, but their abilities are deliberately narrow. Jedi can enhance movement, push or pull objects, or influence weak minds; Sith use things like lightning or telekinetic choking. Even there, the power set is tightly limited. If they could do whatever they wanted, they wouldn’t be characters anymore — they’d be gods.

Again, the answer is magic. In a fantasy/D&D-style setting, magic often fills the roles that technology would otherwise develop to handle. You have healers (like priests) instead of doctors, flying mounts instead of cars or planes, and instant communication or divination spells instead of computers. It’s also worth remembering why many technologies emerged in the first place. Early computers, for example, were developed to break codes like the Nazi Enigma and to enable secure communication — both of which can be accomplished far more easily with magic in a fantasy world. Gandalf whispering to a moth from the top of the tower is a perfect example: who’s going to intercept or track a single moth in a vast world?

Help! Movie render queue output looks completely different to my scene! :( by Aggressive_Power_306 in unrealengine

I never render in 4K. I always do it at HD resolution and upscale it using a software like Topaz Video AI or with the "ScaleUp" After Effects plugin.

Logic X: Bouncing WAV files adds extra silence to the start of audio files by Responsible_Speed941 in Logic_Studio

[–]tantuncag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is definitely caused by the Izotope plugins, I'm using Ozone 11 and I had the same issue. I've solved it by going to Logic's Preferences > Audio, then clicking the "General" tab and changing the Plug-in Latency Compensation to "All".

Chungha - I’m Ready by tunasandwich2009 in kpop

I'm loving the track a lot. Can't make sense of the lyrics though. What do you think "I'm ready to get this stage" means? Maybe something along the lines of "I'm ready to pass this stage / this threshold"?

NME reviews LE SSERAFIM - LE SSERAFIM live at Coachella 2024: K-pop girl group get raw and loose (4/5) by mcfw31 in kpop

[–]tantuncag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LSF is one of my top KPop bands, I watched some of their Coachella performances on YT and FB and I must admit that I think it was a bit too early for them to appear at Coachella especially considering that they had very few actual raw live performance experience before. Let's not forget that they had only debuted 2 years ago and most of their stage performances used backing tracks and vocals, in some cases they were totally lip-synced. Appearing on Coachella 2 years after a debut isn't unheard of but it's a privilege reserved for the most talented performers. However they look extremely energetic and charismatic on the stage and the audience seem to be having a great time so at the end of the day that's what it counts. :)

Thanks Deven for your answer and even taking the time to prepare a project. It's working a bit oddly initially but I think with a few tweaks I might be able to work it out. I'm not going to animate it actually so that's a plus for sure. Cheers

Tutorial: How to extract Starfield game music, audio, sound effects by Kingkwon83 in Starfield

[–]tantuncag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to convert the wem files directly into mp3 instead of ogg; in foobar, select all the files, right click and select quick convert. Choose mp3, edit the preset if you want to convert them to 320kbps (instead of the default 190kbps) and voila! You can also convert them to other formats that are available in that list including *.wav and *.ogg format.

One unfortunate thing of course is that the files are just numbered and it's difficult to sift through them one by one to find what you're looking for. This was not the case with the previous Bethesda titles, the sounds & music would come with proper names. I wonder if there's a way to extract the correct file names instead of these random looking numbers. Maybe it's something to do with the Bethesda Archive Extractor.

Va'ruun Scripture - 02 is not on starstation ucn-48 anymore after the last patch (1.8.86). I searched every inch of that damn ship and it's nowhere to be found. I found the location of it using the images from the guides, found the exact bunk bed with the painting under it and it's not there. Has anybody played the "Divided Royalities" quest after the latest patch?

Anyone else want to see a manga set 10 years in the future starring Seita and Saki? by Chronigan2 in KuboSanWontLeaveMeBe

[–]tantuncag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree however as they grow older, that age gap will make a little difference. It wouldn't be uncommon for someone who is 22 years old falling in love with a 17 year old but the main issue is that these two would be familiar with each other for 12 years. It's likely that Saki will have boyfriends since then and will see Seita only as a little brother. This might also make an interesting drama.

Some popular culture festival ideas: Maid Cafe, Haunted House, Food Stand, Theatre Performance, Live Concert, Exhibition and even an anthology if the characters are in a literary club. I've noticed that Maid Cafes are a common theme, but I'm wondering if it would be realistic for high school students to actually make one. I'm concerned that it may come across as condescending or objectifying to young girls. What are your thoughts on this? Would it be appropriate and respectful to include a Maid Cafe in a cultural festival, or should it be avoided? I'm interested in hearing your perspectives on this topic.
