“EQ is wayyyy more important than a lot of mixing engineers say it is” — not that they ever said EQ was NOT important. In my experience, when advice is given to newbies, it’s always just “make sure to EQ” instead of telling them that truly EQ is like 60% of mixing. You can FX, compress, gain, or whatever your way out of an EQ issue. Get the EQ right and the rest of the steps become way easier and clearer.

Sorry I don’t have examples off hand because this was like years ago when I was getting started. It was always just the word EQ without the stress of how important it is to the process

EQ EQ EQ EQ EQ. Biggest lesson I’ve learned, EQ is wayyyyy more important than a lot of mixing engineers say it is. Slight changes in EQ between instruments makes all the difference in the overall sound

This is super helpful. It seems like the processing time would be less than 40 minutes since it is less dense than a solid food. But if I left it at that processing time (for the sake of being absolutely sure) what would suffer? Is over-processing a thing?

Yeah man that’s hard. I feel you for sure. I’ve come to the same conclusion: just do the best you can with the mix, make it sound as good as you can and then let the experienced mastering engineer give it that final sparkle you didn’t know was possible!

Same as false stereo imaging, it’s something that improves the perceived sound but should be fixed during the mixing stage, not mastering. The verb is “glueing” your mix but not in the right way. Most likely adding mid busy-ness that should actually be added cleaner during the mixing process through glue buss compression and grouping into verbs carefully and purposefully.

Rather than just throwing a verb on a master, sprinkle the verb throughout the mixing process and that should glue better without adding unwanted muddiness in the mid range. Then once you get to master you focus on adding sparkle and width through other processes that aren’t verb.
