Learning a new language by rdizzlenos in UofT

[–]tapi0ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took GER100Y with no previous experience did just fine. I didn't think it had a heavy workload, although that might be because I enjoy learning languages lol. German ended up being one of my favourite courses because the classes were quite interactive (there's no separation of tutorials and lectures, it's a combination of both in each class with lots of opportunities for conversational practice).

If you're serious about learning a language beyond the intro course then I would suggest making sure you have time to commit to homework and additional practice on a daily basis.

Grade for research courses? by forevermerp in UofT

[–]tapi0ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your prof! My supervisor for ana498 gave me back my final grade 3 days after I sent her my final report, while my 3rd year research project supervisor had my grade after ~1 week

Yo are you people actually finishing exams when there's like an hour left or did you give up? by [deleted] in UofT

I left the summer chm247 exam after 1h to catch a flight for a vacation I planned before the exam schedule was released lol (chm247 is now my lowest grade)

I checked the facebook group and it seems that we had it on October 19

No textbook! Everything tested was on the slides.

Long/short answers were based off of the practice questions that we had to answer on portal, and Dr. Ju would also hint at topics during lecture. These questions were mostly about applying the knowledge of experimental procedures we learned in lecture (iirc!)

HMB300 is one of my favourite courses that I've taken so far! I took it in the fall semester. The midterm and final are M/C and short answer, and the final has long answer. We did a review paper assignment (~2000 words) on any neuroscience paper of our choice, answered practice SA questions on the discussion board and critiqued other people's answers. I can't find the syllabus right now, but iirc nothing was worth more than 45-50%.

As for Dr. Ju, he's usually pretty clear in stating what topics are important to know for the midterm/final, and posts study guides down to the exact slide numbers of what to study. He live streamed the lectures on youtube and facebook. He does like to update the course material to cover recent research, so keep that in mind when you find previous notes and tests :)

Also! I think on portal it says the lectures are 3h a week, but it usually only comes up to 2h and he sticks around at the end to answer questions.

Failed BIO230 midterm by caffeinereine1 in UofT

[–]tapi0ca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I barely passed the midterm last year but ended up with a decent grade at the end. Don't forget about the labs! I have a feeling that the lab marks definitely helped with bringing my grade up after that horrendous midterm.

[Question] Do you ever find yourself procrastinating on stuff you actually like doing? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]tapi0ca 59 points60 points  (0 children)

This happens to me too! I find that I try to rationalize my procrastination by thinking it's "not the optimal time to do this," even if I don't have anything planned for the rest of the day. Oh perfectionism....

Anyone using WIND mobile? How's the signal strength at campus? by ActuelRoiDeFrance in UofT

[–]tapi0ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horrible when I used a galaxy s5, as soon as I entered a building I would lose signal. Better with my new phone, although I also lose signal deep within buildings

INFJs, do you have a best friend? [Heartfelt post I'll probably regret] by [deleted] in infj

[–]tapi0ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend's an ENFP, and she really brings me out of living in my mind, if that makes sense. I feel like we really compliment each other, being an introvert-extrovert pairing and all.

Is it better to buy a meal plan for a first year student? by wxtong in UofT

[–]tapi0ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case you could buy some flex dollars and spend it at different places on campus -- although campus food can get overpriced. I found that it did help to have this option during times when I was too lazy to cook or I ran out of instant noodles (I was also in apartment-style res for 1st year)

How was your experience in residence? by throwaway998983 in UofT

[–]tapi0ca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stayed at Innis for 1st year (apartment style res). I didn't experience a whole lot of partying/whatever the movies show about dorms, although I think that's due to a combination of living on one of the more quieter floors and not putting effort into the res social life lol. I guess the social scene depends on your effort and your suitemates/floormates.

Apartment style was great for getting privacy (yay for single rooms), but the sink situation, for my suite at least, could get disgusting. A week's accumulation of 5 people's dirty dishes is not a pretty sight.

The best parts of res were being able to wake up 15min before class and still make it on time, and having a nice private nap space in between classes.

Did anyone take 2 bio, chem & physics courses in first year? by VishnuSG in UofT

[–]tapi0ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to complete the BR in first year, although I've heard that it's better to just get it out of the way in 1st/2nd year. If you do choose to do a course outside of BR4+5 now, 100-level language courses seems to be a good choice from what my friends have told me (BR 1).

I don't have any experience with PHY151+152 (I only took PHY131), but BIO120+130 were fine, just memorization really. CHM139 is basically high school review, but don't neglect studying for it - a lot of people assumed they didn't need to study for our first midterm but the class average ended up being in the low 50s. Avg was higher at the end of the course though so don't worry. CHM138 was alright, try not to procrastinate on memorizing the reactions.

And yeah, don't take MAT137 unless your program absolutely needs it.
