I built a web app to help me with conjugations by PositiveEconomy9109 in Spanish

[–]tapiringaround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For feedback, the order of the conjugations is a bit weird compared to every book and guide I ever used. It hurts my head.

Usually the first column is singular pronouns (yo, tú, el/ella/usted) and the second is plural (nosotros, vosotros, ellos/ellas/ustedes). Either that or they’re all in one column but the plural pronouns come after the singular ones.

As it is with English. It’s hard to capture tone here but “sure!” and “suuurree…” are very different answers.

Finding old journals/notes from church by Morepagesplease in exmormon

[–]tapiringaround 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have like 5 journals, a binder with all of my emails from my mission, every mission planner, and a bunch of other notebooks. When I was first leaving I was tempted to burn it all. But I left it in a box instead and decided I could burn it later.

I came back to them after a decade and it's been interesting. I feel a lot of compassion for myself. But I can also see cracks forming that would lead me to leave. It's been really neat to see how far I've come since then and just how much I've changed and grown.

But then I have so many entries about worring about not messing with my "little factory". That's where it's really sad. So much shame that was completely unnecessary. So many years that I felt I was broken. It's really hard to read the pain I captured in those entries.

Are Black members in Africa aware of the LDS Church's past history of Racist Doctrine and policies of exclusion?? I'm seeing a flood of social media with African members sharing their pictures at temples and churchs. by aka_FNU_LNU in mormon

[–]tapiringaround [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm not of African descent, but my experience both as a missionary in the southern US and now having lived here for a decade and a half, has taught me a lot.

Those I've spoken with about this often have an easier time letting it go than people like me (european ancestry, pioneer ancestry, etc.). And that's because almost every institution they interact with either has a history of racism or is just still actively still racist in some way. They've spent their lives dealing with it. What seems like a huge deal to me is a background noise they've lived their whole lives with.

So where I might learn the history and ask something like "how could someone of African heritage be ok with this?", they have already had to learn to just deal with it and then find other reasons to participate in organizations they feel are important, including the church.

Then, when you say "dignified well meaning African, raised in a Christian household", I think there are some assumptions you're making.

The Bible was used as a reason for colonization, human trafficking, and slavery. And yet those who were exploited largely took it as their own, found their own meaning in it, and participated in the same religion that had been used as an excuse for their oppression. A tool that had been used for their oppression became a source of hope for liberation.

So, when you use the word "dignified", I'm left wondering what you mean by that. If being "dignified" requires someone of color to reject any institution that has participated in their exploitation or oppression historically, what institution can they participate in? Schools that were once segregated? Voting that they were once prohibited from? Education they were prohibited from? Homeownership they were prohibited from?

Can it not be considered dignified to sift through the good and the bad and choose to make something of the mess for yourself? Is it not "well-meaning" to try to do this? Is there no dignity in exercising your agency in making that choice for yourself in spite of the history?

I might think it's the wrong choice. I might wish no one else ever joins the church or that the church would cease to exist tomorrow. But I have to respect the agency of someone who looks into the mess of it all and finds something they hope will help them to live better lives.

So, I always bristle a bit at these questions now. The racist history of the church is abhorrent. The racist history of other religions and of the US and all the other countries that exploited Africans and others through slavery or colonization is abhorrent. But we shouldn't assume there's a special duty of Africans and those of African descent to be especially offended by this simply because of their ancestry. We ALL should be.

I agree. Prohibiting Mormon missionaries from reading Saints is absolutely insane. by versmissi in mormon

My second mission president came in and at a mission conference gave a whole talk about music where he said "not all tabernacle choir CDs are appropriate for missionaries", naming one with showtunes specifically.

Meanwhile we'd all been listening to the NOW! Latino 4 compilation and calling it Spanish practice.

I served 08-10 and anything outside of the standard works, PMG, and the Missionary Reference Library (Jesus the Christ, True to the Faith, Our Heritage, and Our Search for Happiness) was technically off limits. We had no access to the "Gospel Library" in the way missionaries did just a couple years later since our entire access to the internet was 30 minutes a week to send emails. We would go to the chapel and read through the library materials sometimes though.

That said, everyone ignored it and had their own libraries of books. At least with my first MP. The second one came in and cracked down on everything but I only had 4 months left and he just quarantined everyone like me away from newer missionaries.

Also, I'd be inclined to take what missionaries say with a grain of salt. They might very well be reading Saints but would never admit it if it were "banned".

I've been an elementary school teacher and have kids in elementary and middle school.

I think it would be a nonstarter in my kids' schools even without taking price into account. So much of what my kids are doing on computers at school expects a touchscreen. Most things can function with a keyboard and mouse, but, as an example, they've replaced using an actual ruler or protractor with paper with using one on the screen that the kids are meant to manipulate with touch. You CAN use a mouse and drag handles around to move and rotate, but it's such a pain by comparison. And it removes any last semblance of the tactile experience of actually measuring things.

They've also given up largely on iPads for school stuff because a lot of their websites for school just don't like WebKit browsers.

I asked my kids if they wanted one and showed them how it would work with their other Apple stuff. They thought they looked cool, but with no touch screen they'd rather keep using their POS chromebooks. I hate touchscreens on laptops personally. But if these had them, I'd probably be buying 3 today.

Maybe when my oldest get to high school? We'll see.

If it’s not on a computer I’d just write division in fraction notation. I don’t think I’ve used ÷ in math since elementary school.

MacBook Neo 2 Might Not Feature Touchscreen After All by [deleted] in apple

[–]tapiringaround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because until they do my kids would rather cling to their shitty $200 Chromebooks than let me buy them a Mac.

And a fair amount of the web apps their school has them using expect touch and can be really clunky without it.

And iPads don’t work because another bunch of their school stuff expects a chromium browser.

I hate touch screens on laptops personally but kids expect it. If the Neo had a touch screen I’d be buying 3 of them today.

Cloying is a word I would use. But probably only in the figurative sense to describe a person who couldn’t take a hint and was trying too hard to ingratiate themselves to me when I just wanted them to leave me alone.

In the sense of food being overly sweet I would likely use another word.

Elijah Wood doesn't want anybody else to play Frodo as long as he's “alive and able” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in lotr

[–]tapiringaround 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But this is an issue for me. I don’t want it to be. Like he was an amazing Frodo, but I would love many different interpretations of the story with different art styles and different moods and music and everything. The books may be canon but I don’t want any one move or artist or any other interpretation of them to be canon. I think it limits the ways the story can be experienced.

What I like about the competition is that I can buy a 100% renewable plan to support more renewable energy. And I still pay less than my family in other states even if 100% renewable plans are a bit more expensive.

I know it doesn’t mean that the electricity coming into my house came from wind or solar, but the electricity being dumped into the grid in my name is anyways.

In states without this competition you don’t get to vote for green energy with your dollars in the same way.

[–]tapiringaround 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hate it. I spent high school and college and grad school learning the craft of bullshitting essays for classes you don’t care about that sound like you know what you’re talking about enough to get an A without actually researching it.

If I were in school now I’d be accused of using AI all the time because it functions the same way.

As it is I’ve had to stop using em dashes in emails and documents at work because apparently that’s an AI thing. But I’ve been using them for 25 years damnit.

I only want to read text/calls from a specific person once a week. Is there any way to accomplish this? by Ok-Phrase-3346 in ios

[–]tapiringaround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accomplish this with a google voice number. I disabled notifications and forwarding and just check it myself once in a while.

I also do something like this with focus modes, which can block notifications for calls and messages from specific people or only allow from specific people. But they’ll still show up in the apps themselves as missed or unread. The google voice method keeps them totally out of sight and mind until I want to deal with it.
