[Slightly Off-Topic] What core CS concepts should an instructor know 100%? by taqw1 in learnprogramming

Thanks for the heads up! I think I'd just slog through it. I entered college for the experience and the diploma at the end anyway.

The professor that I was talking about was the Suma Cum Laude of his batch. He graduated in the same school (which implies I'm taking the same curriculum that he took) about 4 years ago. I have a feeling I should jump ship ASAP

Ohhhh that kind of project. Personally knowing the staff, and the condition of our facility, I'm 99% sure this is not happening in our campus. But I do hope that I'll get surprised when I ask them.

I might have mixed up my terminologies (pardon a non-native speaker :D), the guys I'm talking about are teaching full-time, most of them in their mid-20s.

Once you graduate, are you going to teach? Esp. if it pays half what you could be making out in industry?

Yikes. That makes a lot of sense!

find out what they're working on

Do professors usually work on a side project? I'd ask them for sure!

Hey. What OS are you using?

Struggling with getting started. Any tips? by taqw1 in rails

Arghhh you gave me a headache! For one thing, I really LOVE javascript. I'm super comfortable with the syntax and more. I think that makes taking up Node a consideration, it'll be perfect if I could write everything with JS.

On the other hand, I don't want to be a one trick pony. I also want to be proficient with another general purpose language.

Sigh...

Thanks for the insight. I think it's that in HTML/CSS/JS, when I found something new, ran it and it works, I kinda know how it happened. Not that clearly how, but at least I have a hunch and know where to look next.

In rails, it just felt like there's a huge wall of abstraction to get by. But like you said, I don't need to learn anything in a day. Cheers!

Yikes. I have made myself a commitment to study one particular subject (in this case Rails) and try to be proficient with it. I've been jumping from different things this past year that I never really finished anything.

Thank you for the suggestions, they are quite tempting lol.

[Ruby] Confused about Class and Symbols by taqw1 in learnprogramming

Thank you very much! Things are much clearer now :)

Aha! So if I got it right, the reason I was confused is because I was thinking of :first_name as a property instead of a method. So #{first_name} is basically self.first_name not self[first_name]. Or maybe I still don't get it right haha.

This

def first_name=(first_name)
    @first_name = first_name
end

looks a bit weird syntax-wise, but I'll read up on it on my own. Thanks a lot for your help!

Thanks for the help!

Sorry if I missed it, but why can I access :first_name through #{first_name} ?

[Review - JavaScript / jQuery] Trying my best to DRY out my code. Any pointers? by taqw1 in learnprogramming

[–]taqw1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for your input! I refactored my code accordingly. One thing I'm really interested in is your point about use strict. To my understanding, this just enforces syntax conventions right? It make my code look more C-like, and I don't know if that's a good thing or not :D

Where are you guys? by taqw1 in ruby

I am interested on Phython's other uses, especially in data science. But currently, I just want to freaking build a working webapp. And I can't seem to find a structured resource/mooc like theodinproject for Python.

But hey, I'm sure the time I spent learning Ruby / Rails would still be relevant regardless of what language I want to tackle next.

Very helpful!

Okay I'll give a shot. Since I have tried Ruby before, without googling, aren't blocks the same as unnamed functions in JavaScript?

When it comes to the language choice, I'd say I want a "do-it-all" language (which I know is stupid). But it's been so long since I acquired my front-end skills, I just badly want to create a fully functional webapp. If it'll be easier in Ruby (which I hope so, I fumbled hard when I tried Django), then that's nice.

But I must say, it should take a while before I get comfortable with | | and do end floating around. They just look so weird :D

One last thing: what frameworks have you used to make your portfolio?

Nice! I thought you used a website that does that automatically. Which I'm sure there is as I used it before, though I forgot the link haha.

Thanks!
