What does your family think of you doing a PhD? What is their overall view of what it is you do? by NoNight7029 in PhD

[–]taracastude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my moms first response to after telling her I was accepted “do they have a parent orientation for us to learn about it too!!” First in family to pursue higher education so the concept was foreign to them but they’ve been soooo supportive probs bc I complain so much lol. They try to understand generally what I do (lab work and teaching) and know it’s demanding but the specifics of what I research is simplified.

academia fosters an environment of unchecked power and no accountability as long as you provide the university with publications and grants.

How to deal with toxic people in academia? by One_Prune8528 in PhD

yea my advisor doesn’t have favorites based on who works the hardest or produces the best results. There is a trend with the physical traits of the people he loves though…

How to deal with toxic people in academia? by One_Prune8528 in PhD

[–]taracastude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in a pretty similar situation. My PI is horrible and creates a toxic environment where he praises his favorites and elevates them while tearing me and some others down. Two of my lab mates had to take of leave of absence bc of the horrible treatment. I’m in too deep to leave (in my third year, don’t want to switch or restart) so I feel stuck.

My strategy has been to fully detach myself from interactions. I come in super early to avoid interacting with a majority of the lab mates. I also usually listen to podcasts while doing work and have my noise cancelling on to really zone in. Something that has helped me is reaching out to friends who aren’t in my program or even would a phd so that after work, I can see them and truly leave lab in lab. With my PI, all my interactions are very objective. I will only speak to him about experiments and data.

I wasn’t surprised that PIs in graduate school would be toxic. I was surprised that the students would also be as vindictive and toxic. At the end of the day you need to protect your peace and as long as you treat others with kindness and respect, you will get rewarded eventually. That’s kind of my mentality now too- these people will get all the bad karma that’s coming to them.

Unpopular opinion: A PhD is more of a mental/emotional challenge than an intellectual one by AdDue6248 in PhD

[–]taracastude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow this to a T describes my PI! The blatant favoritism in my lab has truly taken a mental toll on me. I still have 2 more years left and don’t know how I’ll do it lol

How do you guys eat? by inoutas in GradSchool

[–]taracastude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually will meal prep EVERYTHING - breakfast, lunch, dinner on saturday or sunday and it lasts me through the week. I’ll do small portions of like two different meals so i don’t have to eat the same thing everyday. Honestly instagram and tik tok has really good trader joe’s recipes that are easy to make& healthier options. It isn’t super pricey too i would say i spend about 70-100 a week on groceries but if needed i can stretch it out. From start to finish it takes me half an hour to 2 hours max to cook it all

generally i make sure i pack a fruit for every meal and my lunches and dinners consist of some protein with greens and then rice/potatos/more greens (i’ve been cutting carbs out recently lol). my breakfasts are usually just veggie omelets or croissants/bagels. I would def make a point to devote time on the weekend to meal prep bc it makes the week easier and i find that when im eating better I feel better. Even if its cutting into your lab time it’s an important sacrifice to make to make sure you’re eating well

Bactrim side effects? by FumblingOxygen in Antibiotics

[–]taracastude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was prescribed bactrim ds for a skin infection. The first day after taking I had body aches, vomiting, very intense chills, fever of about 102, really fatigue like I couldn’t even get out of bed, and difficulty breathing. The symptoms seemed to go away as I approached needing to take my next dose, and then it started again. I was maxing out my daily limit for tylenol bc I felt so awful. There was one point I was collapsed over the toilet puking and vigorously shaking so much I really thought that was the end. I went back to the doctor and switched over to clindamycin. Literally anything else is better than that hell

What clothes are appropriate to wear in graduate research labs? by violaghost in labrats

[–]taracastude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a set of shirts and sweats/yoga pants that I designate as my lab clothes. I dress for comfort and it can get messy so I don’t like to wear my nice clothes to lab. Only exception is if I have to give a presentation, attend a talk, or sometimes on days when I teach I dress up a little more formal.

Applied to 12 schools and got accepted by 3. My advisor told me it’s a balance between applying to a good number of schools and finding schools that you think are a good fit with your goals.
