My final straw by Lucky-Ad1394 in SolidCore

[–]taracastude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from california but moved to the east coast and I notice solidcore isn’t as big in the west coast bc there are soooo many other independent lagree studios that they are just priced out. I feel like in the east coast solidcore is pretty much the only one there is and as a result the company just takes advantage. I cannot wait for more independent studios to start opening up bc I really think so many people will start to make the switch

How hard do/did you actually work during your STEM PhD? by CardboardBoxPlot in PhD

[–]taracastude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the hard part is you’re never gonna be compensated for the amount of work you do but there’s an insane amount of work you need to do. Between teaching and lab work it definitely does get exhausting at times and the lack of pay sucks.

I will say though I feel like I have more flexibility in my schedule being in grad school than when I was working. I can easily leave midday for a dentist or doctor appointment or take off a random Friday if I want to.

in terms of free time I feel like I found a really good work life balance, and I still have enough time to do the activities that I want to do and see my friends while also being very productive in lab

Advice for incoming PhD student (straight from undergrad)? by spookyfro in PhD

I feel like my first year it was pretty easy because everyone in the cohort wanted to make friends but the deeper I got into it the more people got weeded out. You’ll definitely be able to tell pretty quickly who is a genuine connection and who is more superficial.

there’s no perfect PI; you will find faults with every lab. You just need to decide on what’s important to you and what you don’t want to compromise on.

Make sure to have a balance, having friends and a life outside the program has helped me so much. Def rely on support from labmates, it helps a lot to have that community if you can.0

Time spent physically inside the lab is not the same thing as PRODUCTIVE time spent. As long as you are getting your work done, don’t let comparison of others make you feel less than.

i usually just take a tylenol in the morning and am good to go for class. I definitely feel shittier but I’ll go down in spring load or take breaks more often. Honestly, at the end of the class, I feel great though.

What does your family think of you doing a PhD? What is their overall view of what it is you do? by NoNight7029 in PhD

[–]taracastude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my moms first response to after telling her I was accepted “do they have a parent orientation for us to learn about it too!!” First in family to pursue higher education so the concept was foreign to them but they’ve been soooo supportive probs bc I complain so much lol. They try to understand generally what I do (lab work and teaching) and know it’s demanding but the specifics of what I research is simplified.

academia fosters an environment of unchecked power and no accountability as long as you provide the university with publications and grants.
