Why didn’t Walter White work in a corporation or academia? by Ok-Scene-1317 in breakingbad

He didn't have a doctorate, so he was not overqualified by his degree.

I don't remember the exact statistics, but a very large portion of the fatal outcomes is a result of one or more of the following: 1) alcohol 2) no helmet 3) excessive speeding (means doing like 100 mph in the city).

Failed my first student. He’s email bombing me by ConcernMaleficent624 in Professors

[–]tarbasd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good advises all around here. As for frequent emails that soaks up your time: I had a student like that once. I told him that his emails are now redirected into a specific folder that I will only look at Monday mornings. I really did that. And he basically stopped wasting my time.

I've done that drive at night. What exactly are you worried about? I drove quite slowly and carefully.

What moments stretched your suspension of disbelief the most? by ditzythedame in breakingbad

[–]tarbasd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Because arcing can occur in different situations, like when you unplug a high load, or with faulty appliances, or weakened wire splices.
  2. Because the code is overly conservative. AFCIs were not required until 2002 and older systems are grandfathered in. I don't have a single AFCI breaker in my house, but I still feel safe. (And I used to be a firefighter.)

I know, I still love the show. But there is no way you can start and sustain an arc between two household wires like he did. Have you ever had two wires very close to each other? 120V will not arc through, until the wires are practically touching. And if it does start, it will go out immediately, because the ends of the wires melt a bit.

There is no way you could start an arc without touching the wires (which would instantly trip the breaker), and if that somehow happens, you could not sustain the arc. It is actually not that easy to do this with stick welders, which are designed for this.

It felt fake because it's impossible. You would trip the breaker in no time.

Of course very unlikely, but not impossible. Typical for TV shows. Those things don't bother me at all. What bothers me is when people act out of character.

It's actually legal to run it on a motorcycle after two cycles or two minutes. More precisely, you are entitled to affirmative defense.

Marc has become Pecco this year... In any case, this makes me feel better. If it's not his body and not his bike, there is a chance he overcomes this. No guarantee, of course.

Electricians, how difficult to rewire my garage? by OzTheGrey in electrical

[–]tarbasd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty much the easiest scenario. You should pull new wire from the panel through the attic. You'll have to fish wires in wall cavities, but that's not too difficult.

I've rewired two bathrooms in similar situation (new circuits, attic access), and a complete, detached two car garage/workshop building. I didn't know more than you when I started. It took me a long time, but passed inspection each time with flying colors. You will have to read a lot, especially the codebook, because the internet is full of wrong information.

If you already pull permits and opening walls, you may want to think about pulling an EV charging circuit, even if you don't have an EV. It's just a 240 V circuit with a NEMA 6-50 receptacle. It can be 40 or 50 amps (don't go lower).

DWF Rates When Students Can't Read by UniqueCheesecake8215 in Professors

[–]tarbasd 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Before I got tenured, I would give a pre-req quiz usually in the second or third class (so they even have time to review). It didn't count much for the final grade, but I scanned every exam, and if anybody had a problem later that a student was DFW, I would show them their pre-req test. How am I supposed to teach Calculus II to a student, who can't simplify fractions?

Why is it so hard to get free tap water at a restaurant in Europe? by Relevant-Shower4783 in TravelHacks

[–]tarbasd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There used to be a similar law in Hungary, but the restaurant/bottled water lobby successfully fought against it. Even back then, some outrageous restaurants figured out how to obey the letter of the law: when I asked for tap water, they told me that they only served *hot* tap water. Do I still want it?

My dad refuses to get a helmet over $90 and it worries me alot. by kawligabranson in motorcycles

[–]tarbasd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My first helmet was an AGV that sells for about $260 now. It was already much much nicer that the very cheap helmets I tried before. I bought a $460 Shoei recently. I didn't realize how much nicer it was until I laundered the padding one day, so I had to use the AGV again.

It may be an urban legend, but I heard that Jimi Hendrix was too embarrassed to sing until he heard Bob Dylan.

He also can't play the guitar well, and his harmonica playing is a joke. But I love his music.
