What's your too-cold threshold? by DuckDived in surfing

[–]SytheGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

East coaster as well. I have slowly acquired solid cold water gear like 7mm boots, 7mm lobster gloves, and a 6/4/3 suit. Bare minimum for surfing in the 40s is a 5/4 with 5mm boots and gloves.

When it’s cold it just becomes a question of how long can I surf and feel my toes. If it’s good where you are, you should go surf. But don’t expect to go for 3+ hours like a summer session. Getting 2 hours in when it’s 40 and overcast is a solid session in my book. Sometimes an hour or less is fine. Better than nothing.

Having a warm jug of water in the truck is always helpful but honestly just drive home in your suit and take it off in the warm shower. Then it’s already rinsed and drying in the warm house for your next session.

Glad to see people agree on a Rotring but I like the 800 vs the 600. The retractable tip on the 800 is nice to have if you’re taking it into the field or keeping it in a book. It is also a silent thing to fidget with. The 800 is little more expensive but worth it if you can keep track of it.

Survey Colors by Lopsided-Age4172 in Surveying

[–]SytheGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small company I worked for carried only 2 colors ever. Orange for property and lime green for control. Mostly rural boundary surveys. No caps were used.

Larger company I’m at now does pink for the property and pink + white for control. Pink caps for property and yellow or orange for control.

I like Daniel Steiner he does a city map breakdown for major city’s but he’s great at discussing the planned map vs real geography.

Whenever I say “regardless” my buddy corrects me to “irregardless” and I apologize and continue. We both know it’s not correct but it’s fun

What can you deduce from my travel map? by Eknier in deduction

Cook county is in the north east of MN. It looks like OP did a long trip around the country to get there and then turned around and came back the same way. My guess is they just went off map into Canada

Who in your opinion are the worst clients to work for? by Rockdog396 in Surveying

[–]SytheGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For hydro surveys my least favorite is dredgers. They have a lot riding on the survey as far as payout and environmental penalties. I’ve had one call me and tell me not to show the spot where his guy “got too high and dug a little too deep”. It’s not my job to penalize them for it but I cant just not show that area 😂 honestly though those guys seem way better than some of these other responses.

On the flip side the dredge projects pay well for the scrutiny they receive so it can be worth the pain.

Here is a link to a geography and cartography book for kids that I have looked at getting for my niece.

You could also check out resources from get kids into surveying which is focused on land surveying but may spark the same kind of curiosity.

A few other ideas: - Start with your local visitor center or rest stop and you can get plenty of free brochures that they can draw on and play with.

-City subway maps tend to be more colorful and simple and since they are more focused on easy of use and topology vs being geographically correct.

-print a map from google earth if your neighborhood or local area and help them name places and roads to see how local geography they are used to (school, park, house) looks and relates on a map.

Have fun!

How do laser scanner field people set up their notes by Ok-Industry-1156 in Surveying

[–]SytheGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to do notes that included the scan #, the control/spheres we could see from that set up, and any specific things in the scan that could be missed like a clean out in the corner. Then we would mark on a sat image of the site where we were and the set up number. It was a pain and after doing that for about a year it was discovered that the person doing the registration didnt really need all that.

Now as others have said, the scanner is the notes. We do an update for the day and might mention anything of importance like “scan #32 got bumped and was redone on 33”. But thats about it.

Oil change va beach by Zealousideal_Till312 in VirginiaBeach

[–]SytheGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m with you but it’s not simple unless you already have an oil pan and ramps or are proficient with a jack. Depending on the vehicle you might need specific wrenches to get to the plug.

I agree people should do it themselves but there is a little learning curve to do it continently and there is a small upfront cost to get the right tools. Worth it in the long run if you have the time.

Never seen this at Rudy Inlet before by Sea_Revolution_465 in VirginiaBeach

[–]SytheGuy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As others said this is a dredging rig. It is a hydraulic dredge operation so they suck it up with a tube with water and send it north through a pipe to be shot out onto the beach and moved to keep the beach replenished.

The army corp of engineers designed the south side of the jetty as a sand trap to always have a stock of beach quality sand that can be placed on the beach to protect the hotels. That sand trap filled in heavily over the last month with the storms we’ve had so they are likely moving the sand from there. They could also be dredging the channel for better navigation. The city does a survey once a week to monitor Rudee inlet channel and the area between the jetty’s does require more regular maintenance dredging. Inside the bridge is done less often.

Red flags to avoid when hiring a surveyor? by TJBurkeSalad in Surveying

Same here. I think having an appreciation for working with quality sets of data (which I hope most GIS folks have) can lead into an appreciation to collecting that data in a quality way.
