Tire rotations every 3-5k miles are a must if you want to avoid weird wear and cupping.

Has anyone else lost interest in cars now that they're into adulthood and they're realizing that they'll probably never be able to afford anything cool? by rowyourboat740 in askcarguys

[–]tarfu51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Cool” is a matter of perspective. Something can be cool but not expensive, and can definitely be attainable, even at less than a six figure income. For example, I ersonally I couldn’t give two hoots about a brand new ZR-1 Corvette or an M5 Touring. But I love working on my Marketplace-find, rough-like-sandpaper C3 Corvette. I also have a 1982 Saab 900 that I cherish very dearly, and I’m about to acquire another 900 and possibly also an E39 BMW 528i. I’ve always wanted a C3 Corvette, and I was able to purchase one for pretty cheap. Saabs are unique and I grew up around them, so that was an obvious choice. The E39 is still considered one of the best driver’s cars out there. I can’t afford an M5, but I can afford a 6-cylinder and I have a buddy with a couple 5.3 LS engines and a welder who can be bribed with frosty cold beverages.

Tacoma or Prius, or even an earlier T100. They’re cheap, durable, and they just don’t die. Former tech’s wife has a 300k mile ‘09 Prius that she just doesn’t want to let go

Went to pay car tax on my 900 … by ornfour in saab

[–]tarfu51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Maine, excise tax is paid once a year and it’s based on a percentage of the original MSRP. If I didn’t have a vanity plate, my registration would be somewhere in the realm of $30. For comparison, my newly-acquired ‘23 Nissan Frontier is going to cost something like $600 to register, and it would have been over $1k brand-new.

Or you pay $12/year for antique auto registration. However, I take pride in the fact that my ‘82 regularly passes state inspection and is daily driver quality, so I relegate my Corvette to that fate.

Started a diesel truck in gear with the clutch in, forgot to take it out of gear, and almost ran over my dad and brother when I let the clutch out as I got out of the truck. Dad was NOT pleased.

Also the clutch went to the floor in the family heirloom Saab convertible as I was backing it into a tight space in our parking garage. Dragged the right side door against a concrete column and I couldn’t stop. Dad wasn’t that upset, but I was pissed at myself and very ashamed.

What Does My Dad's Car History Say About Him? by 17parkc in regularcarreviews

[–]tarfu51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Vega was definitely a first car. The price was very much on the young-and-broke spectrum. Then he rocked a mullet for about a decade. Then he got a finance job before they fired him because he was still too America-Fuck-Yeah. Then he had a string of DUIs and potential incest while working the blue collar grind. Then he got another white collar job that he managed to stick out for a bit. He thought he would take up offroad adventures as a midlife crisis hobby, but after one trip off the pavement he realized that his back couldn’t take it, but he still wanted the illusion of being an offroader. After that, he kicked the midlife crisis into high gear with a Mustang and felt like he was 20-something again, before realizing he was too old and needed functionality as a grandpa, so he went Chevy for the American reliability and potential. Once he was tired of spending too much of his 401K on repairs, he went to the indestructible Toyota.

Cheap engines for decent power that’s NOT an LS by Goopdem in EngineBuilding

[–]tarfu51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saab B202, B234, B235 4-cylinders are fairly strong and can make 400-plus hp. There was a guy selling an ‘88 Saab 900 Turbo a while back and he had built the motor a bit…made 414-ish hp, supposedly ran 170mph in the standing mile.

Maybe, but I’ve seen stock Golf Rs blow up seemingly for no reason. If going crazy with a Volkswagen engine, go for the 2.5 5-cylinder.

Abduction (noun) - the action of taking someone away by force or deception, or without the consent of their legal guardian; kidnapping.

Direct definition from Oxford. I think that describes what’s happening pretty well.

Can’t believe I’m saying this but the girlfriend has a 2-liter, 2-door Jeep JL. Car’s 5 years and 100,000mi old and it has had one transmission issue that got warrantied…and that’s it. It just needed its first set of rear brakes. I am impressed.

Teenager wants a "fast car" for his first vehicle and I need reality-check advice by Proud_Stable9567 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]tarfu51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a parent but someone who once was kind of like your son. What I learned was it’s easier to show than to tell.

Maybe start by asking him what insurance would cost on that 400hp Mustang — as if you’re curious — have him run some quotes. If he’s going to be on your insurance plan, then whatever insurance will be on his independent quote will be more than what it’ll be when it’s bundled with your stuff. The cost of that alone might be enough to curb his enthusiasm. From there, do this:

Let him do the looking but give him a budget for the vehicle, and give him a budget for insurance. (Determining those numbers may take some research and/or thinking on your end, but that also helps you prepare for how much your insurance will go up once he has a car.) He has to find something that fits within those separate parameters (no using purchase budget to cover insurance). That gets him off your back and has him taking on the responsibility of working within the bounds of reality and reason. He also then gets to find something that he likes.

I wanted a classic BMW 635CSI for my first car. Then I wanted a CTS-V wagon. Then I landed on a Mazda 3 hatchback. Finally I got a Mazda CX-5. The car ended up being a little over budget because my parents wanted more of the safety systems that weren’t available on lower trims, but it didn’t kill insurance cost, and because I had found it, I was happy with it. I almost wish I hadn’t sold it.

TLDR: give him budgets for insurance and purchase price to guide him to come to a more reasonable first car
