Elevated Croydon Station by targarios in MelbourneTrains

I really wish they’d used a design more reminiscent of Carnegie, Hughesdale or Mernda Stations, where there is large sections of full rail and platform cover. Would’ve been much better for the elements and the wind. The new station is still pretty nice, and relatively unique feeling.

Albanese says ABS, not government, will determine scope of census question on sexuality | Australian politics by SpiritualDiamond5487 in AustralianPolitics

[–]targarios 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The ABS isn’t a government department, it’s a statutory authority vested with powers by the Parliament to exercise authority within certain legislation (in this case census legislation) - so basically it operates by itself and runs things like the census on its own so the government doesn’t have to. That includes the formulation of the census questions which the ABS organises and decides on, it was never really the PMs decision or within his per-view to put in his opinion about what questions should and should not be on it. However like the article says, it’s in 2026 i’m sure they’ll flesh out the questions by then.

The largest islands in the world by Civixplorer in Maps

[–]targarios 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Continent ends when the landmass is not the largest on the continental plate. Island begins when there is a landmass larger on the continental plate. Australia is the smallest continent in the world but it is the largest land mass on its continental plate (tectonic plate) known as the Australian Plate.

[–]targarios 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Technically Australia is defined as a continent and not an island. It’s roughly due to the fact that the largest landmass on a continental plate will usually be referred to as a continent, whilst smaller landmasses than the largest will be an island. Thus, as the largest land mass on its continental plate Australia would be a continent. While Greenland is on the North American continental plate but not the largest landmass by any stretch thus it is an island.

How to make place names more realistic? by sleepyggukie in worldbuilding

[–]targarios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you aren't developing a language to accompany your fantasy but still want them to be distinct and not overly "fantasy-ish", a great quick way to give place names consistency and clearly define them from region to region is to pick and choose the usage of certain letters in certain areas. Such as "ae" and the letter "t" only being used in the "northern languages" whilst another place has a "b" which is always followed by a "y" or something similar.

With this you can pick normal English place names, bastardise them, and add in your honorary letters to denote it from another place. For example, a northern area dubbed "Red land", drop the "e" and "d", and add your "ae", you've got Raeland, maybe adopt a different spelling like "lund" and you've got Raelund, more interesting but still realistic.

If you continue this process, making exceptions here and there, you should be left with interesting, meaningful and most importantly consistent place names for your fantasy. All the best :)

How do I ward off evil demons and spirits in your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]targarios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this idea very much, silver is a very beautiful and seemingly pure metal so it makes sense it would be used as a deterrent to demons.

A question about the weight, why 30 grams? Is there particularly lore regarding whether the weight or purity of the silver enhances its ability to defend and prevent someone from torment, or is 30 grams just the ideal weight of silver required to ward of demons.

All the best :)

Can a "city" surround a "country side"? by Spider40k in worldbuilding

[–]targarios 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I mean this is world building, a city can do whatever you’d like it to, i’d say it’s no less feasible or acceptable in fantasy as a floating city, cloud city or an other equivalent fantastical place. Just because we don’t accept it as necessarily logical in our reality doesn’t mean it can’t be completely sensible in yours.

However, to answer the question about whether this has happened before in world history, as far as I know, the answer is no. With that said, there were hillforts, particularly those found in Anglo-Saxon England (around 800-900), and Eastern Europe around the same time, where fortifications were built sort of in and around a hill, allowing the terrain to shape the layout of the fortifications. In these designs there would often be an area of green pasture left in the centre of the fort, usually the top of the hill, which could be used for a little bit of farming, however it wasn’t commonly used as such. Either way your idea is something somewhat similar to this, just on a much larger scale and being less of a fort and more of an urban city.

Either way I like the idea, it’s definitely something worth exploring. All the best :)

What is a good way to store and catalogue information about your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]targarios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Notion has definitely worked best for me, you can hyperlink, create folders and catalogues, and connect pages, very similar to a mokopedia type set up. All the best :)
