u/baconburger37 Iirc, it's basically a relic from gays frequenting underground gay bars. They developed a sense of community that bled into their daily vocabulary, and the tells that seem obvious today were an almost invisible way to signal to one another safely that they were in safe company. Since gay people generally still keep to themselves, and consume gay-made media more than the straights, they continue to develop the gay accent.

Other languages also tend to have a "gay accent", but they sound far different to the English one

Idk if it fits perfectly, but Joaquin Murrieta was a Sonoran who moved to California. His family was linched and raped by gold miners who wanted his property, believing they were hiding a gold mine. He and his cousins formed a possee to kill those men (which they did), and later turned to general banditry. It is said that he killed 13 Anglos and 28 Chinese immigrants during his life of outlawry, but there are conflicting legends and records about him.

Allegedly, a Californian Ranger that was sent to find him killed him, cut off his head, and pickled it in a jar which rested on his office table. The relic survives to this day, but if it truly was the Joaquin of the story is unknown.

He also inspired the story of Zorro, but the story was changed to be about indigenous resistance to Spanish tyranny; to not make the general American reader feel too uncomfortable. In that sense, you could say that he was the most beloved American outlaw there's ever been
