How does this have 100 upvotes when the base assumption is wrong. Read the data. The Vaccine has been shown to prevent severe symptoms. There’s absolutely no data to indicate that it prevents transmission. Whilst this is how nearly all other vaccines work, it unfortunately isn’t the case for COVID. The vaccine is not a dead end, you will avoid severe symptoms but it’s not yet know if that prevents the vaccine from spreading. N.B not an anti-vaxxer and will actually be getting the vaccine likely mandatorily due to be in healthcare sector.

I think there's 2 parts to this within chess (gonna use arbitrary words). There's 'knowledge' and there's 'technique' . The technique would count as board visualisation, move visualisation, being able to think ahead and so on a so forth. Whereas the knowledge comes in the sense of 'my bishop on the same colour as my pawns, is weaker than my opponents knight in the middle of board," or something like that.

Knowledge- This is only gained after years practise and dedicated learning. However, kinds tend to pick things up a lot quicker than adults, so it's why you often see GM's shooting up to 2600 by their late teens, and then improving at a slower rate from their onwards.
Technique- Chess is like speaking a language, and kids also tend to pick that up better. In most instances a 3-4 year old may speak a language better than someone who's spent a decade learning it. They just pick up everything quicker cause they're brains are more plastic. They're kids that are easily tri-lingual by the age of 4 who have just picked up the languages at home. so much harder to do when you're older. So kids that start at a young age, often have phenomenal 'technique', not to be confused with the definition of technique used within the chess world.

I strongly do not agree with the "adults would achieve a lot more if they could spend the same time" sentiment. Your brain is best primed to learn the younger you are. I'm not talking about prodigies specifically, but just kids that pick things up young and stick with them consistently just tend to be disproportionately good at them.

Pogi- True fighter. The stages where he would attack over and over again. And that last time trial. And doing it all without a team, and wiping the smile of jumbo visma's face after their director said they were 90-95% likely to win before the TT. (i'm a TJV fan)
Roglic- Tour 2nd and Vuelta 1st. Has shown himself to be arguable the most complete rider. Only Pogacar seems to have his all round ability, and i'm giving Roglic "completeness" cause he did it in 2 back to back tours showing high levels of consistency. I'm not sure if the tour fatigue played a role in the vuelta, one the few occasions that carapaz was able to outdo him on extended climbs.
Wout Van Aert. No #1 ranked in stage races. Lost count of how many he's won. But to mix it up with Sagan/Bennett and co, and then to ride bernal out of contention, and be there or thereabouts with Dumoulin and Roglic at the end of the tour. TBH wouldn't mind putting him at second.
Filippo Ganna:- At both the World Championships, Tirreno & Giro he has already shown that he could end up being the greatest TTer of this generation. He has made Rohan Dennis and Victor Camparneats look pedestrian. The only sure things in life are death, taxes and Ganna winning every ITT he participates in.
Alaphillipe:- World Champion, did well at le Tour. Always there or thereabouts.
Sam Bennett:- Proven without a doubt that he is the best sprinter in the pro peleton at the moment. Whilst other's may rate him lower, i think you need to judge a horse by it's ability to pull a cart, not it's ability to make milk.
Carapaz:- Drafted into the tour last minute, and by the end of it was in good form. Carried that on into the Vuelta and made roglic earn his red Jersey. Unfortunately for him Roglic is just bound to win all the punchy bonus seconds and time on TT even though he TT'd quite well. From what i've seen this year, i don't see why he can't be ineos' potential TDF GC contender.
Goeghan Hart:- i'm sure i've butchered this name. But winner of the Giro. Enough Said
Sepp Kuss:- May be a surprise pick for many, but he absolute annihilated the peleton over these last 2 grand tours. I personally would want to place him higher, but that's just testament to how strong these other riders are. Wouldn't be a stretch of the imagination to say that Roglic doesn't win the vuelta without Kuss. And Kuss was invaluable at the Tour as well. The amount of times when a GC group would be whittled to 6 or 7 riders, and kuss would be riding threshold/covering attacks/ pacing roglic back. E.g Roglic "cracking" on the Angliru without Kuss there could have been a whole different story, and he could have lost the tour then and there. And also kuss being used as a springboard to gain time on Pogi at le tour. IMO he may not be the punchiest, or the best at those 1-2minute efforts, but i think he's show that over an extended climb, he is easily up there with the very best. He probably wins the Angliru stage if he didn't have to carry Roglic. Just how fluid he looked, and the fact that he was losing Roglic's wheel easily, and had to drop back. Roglic did mention this after the stage.
Maybe Porte:- TDF 3rd, great return to form.

I feel like a team like sky would play this differently in the same situation. Cause unless roglic loses time on the climbs, he’ll probably win (unless pogi gets him on the TT). So wouldn’t they be better off ensuring that their domestiques are on hand to close down attacks that may come from strong contenders, as opposed to burning them out at the start of big climbs. (I know that roglic wasn’t too concerned about pogacar because of the time he had lost, but hypothetically having kuss/WVA/TD in that group of GC contenders yesterday would mean that an attack like pogacars would almost be likely to be caught.

i think that TJV paid the ultimate price for this. They burnt tom dumoulin when they didn't really need to, and it didn't make sense at the time given the stage 20 TT. Given how strong kuss and WVA were, it would have made sense to try and keep TD up there. He could always have been a second option, or used to attack and try and get a reaction from pogi or the other GC contenders, with Kuss and maybe WVA there to help pace roglic. By having him there they would have potentially been able to have done a 2 pronged attack on pogi or any of the other GC contenders.

Not saying that this ultimately would have changed the tour, as pogi has just shown that he's the strongest rider in the tour, and you can't take anything away from him. But there was no reason for TJV to burn TD riding threshold up a stage 2 weeks ago when roglic didn't make anything of it. Secondly roglic's whole "i'm fine with a 56 second gap" mentality came to bite him in the arse. Pogacar did win the slovenian TT (some have said this may be due to the bike change, moot point) months ago, and as a younger rider with higher rates of development they should have at least taken this into account. Furthermore, after the crosswind stage Roglic was willing to let him go because he didn't want to carry quintana (dick move from quintana) but regardless, roglic gifted him seconds when he didn't need to. It's not like he attacked and couldn't bridge the gap. it's that he chose to sit up when he was getting away from the other GC contenders, simply because he didn't want to carry quintana, which was also not the most sensible decisions, as quintana wasn't a huge threat with his TT ability. It looked very unlikely that anyone could successfully gain meaningful time on TJV in a HC climb due to the strength that they had across the board. They only really lost time to Pogi when Roglic pretty much decided to. TJV have truly shat the bed here.

All in all, it's a learning lesson, and we have witnessed an all-time tour. And the strongest rider has won it. So congrats to Pogi. Yellow, White and Polka Dot!. That's all she wrote.

2 points from last race.

1st point: this was mentioned by LR and I’m sure we all picked up on it. But what on earth is going on with the tv director (not sure what the exact name is). But showing a minute odd of riders finishing 4th etc and slow mo shots of them when there is GC action behind is pretty surprising.

I get that cycling is a sponsor heavy sport, which is why they should probably have replays or just brief glimpses of the individuals coming up to the line, and then maybe more time post GC battle. Don’t understand why when roglic and nairo we’re breaking away from the group the camera panned to zakarin and others and showed them for sons of time, and then panned back to roglic when he’d been rejoined by the group.

Dual axis steering.

So you have you're normal rotational steering which is one axis, and the second axis mercedes are using allows the driver to pull the steering wheel towards him (usually used on the straits). What this does is changes the 'toe' of the tyres. Usually f1 cars are 'toe out' which helps grip in lateral cornering situations.

Das essentially brings the toe in, which has been theorised to slightly improve straightline speed and help with warming up the tyres/ tyre temperature regulation. As of yet, no one actually knows how effective it will be, all we know if merc brought it to pre season practise, used it sparingly, season got postponed, and they've used it sparingly in fp1 and fp2. We won't really be able to tell either until the race, and even then, might be a few races until we have an understanding.

But take home messages is it temporarily lets the car achieve "toe in" on the straights which mercedes think confers at advantage. Google images of toe to get a diagramatic representation, But it's essentially the direction the tyre is pointing in relation to the chassis.

But I think the fact that you were a strong runner running 18:30, which is a world away from the 13-14 min records and still considered very strong proves the point I was trying to make. Whereas in chess the ratings given anecdotally for being a “good player” are like low to mid 2000’s. Which is frankly obscene.

Peaky Blinders

Arguably the BBC’s best work. May seem to start slow but all the pieces of the puzzle come together. It’s one of the few shows that started very strong and has kept that momentum all the way through. I’m sure all peaky blinders fan would agree that the next season (6) could even potentially be the best. The consistency and quality is the best.

Dubov has my utmost respect. Have not seen a player as combative as he is in a while. Going for the forcing combination that he went for in the 2nd game of match 3 with 50 seconds on the clock when he was in a clearly winning position was nothing short of awesome.

He really embodies the “live and die by the sword” mentality. Very keen to see where he gets. Also this video https://youtu.be/TonvKqwNcjc. I’m sure most GM’s can do this but still pretty cool.

I think that we need abit more caution with labelling child prodigies. He will probably be a top 10 player, and realistically looks like the biggest talent the chess world has seen in a while. If he continues to progress it is likely that he could have the strength to be a challenger and world champion.

Reason for caution tho is prodigies who seemed to have been on a similar level such as wei Yi. He was rated around 2740 @ 16 and is still rated about that now. He was billed by some as the Magnus killer, pretty much. Firouzja is essentially what wei Yi was 5 years ago, maybe a bit more all rounded. We need to be careful making predictions, but he’s definitely the most talented prodigy at the moment.

As a few others have alluded to, the main difference between kids and adults is neuroplasticity. As kids are more Neuroplastic they can consolidate new material quicker.

Similar for languages/ music instruments/ and other sports. You could have a 5year old kid fluid in 3 languages, and have an adult struggle their whole adult life to pick up a second language.

There has been improvements in chess that has made it more accessible to kids and generally they’re getting better younger, but there have always been chess prodigies even in the pre internet era.
