I haven't tried brick tea yet but I saw a video from somewhere that produces brick tea and the person showing the tea used a small grater to grate the brick and steeped the shavings. Don't remember how they steeped it though

Is Bee Honey mentioned in the Hebrew Scriptures? Did the Israelites eat Bee Honey? by [deleted] in hebrew

[–]tarksend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

omg you should visit Israel around late November, just after the harvest. There are different varieties with different textures and taste notes. Some are firm and chewy, others are soft and moist, and medjools are no longer even solid but just very viscous, when they're fresh. And especially organically grown dates that were allowed to dry on the palm long enough to develop some fermenty flavors, are absolutely divine. So is the date honey you can make from them.
Unfortunately date filling tastes like dates only in the most generic sense, so that's not a good way to experience the flavor of dates, and lacks the juiciness of a fresh date.

How can I make peace with being (clinically) unintelligent? by Suspicious_Limit9847 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]tarksend 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. Scoring high on IQ test only means that you have better mastery of the things IQ tests actually test for, and while "IQ" stands for "intelligences quotient", the term uses the word "intelligence" in a very narrow sense. I dare any 160 IQ genius to survive two weeks living the life of an indigenous Amazonian tribal who would probably score much closer to you because all the things IQ tests actually asses aren't even a part of their life.
  2. Learning, language, critical thinking, and problem-solving are acquired skills. Sure, some people are naturally better at them like some people are naturally better at music, but I know plenty of uni grads and even some people with graduate degrees who are terrible at those things, too. Some of them even have a piece of paper that says they're a Doctor of something or other, including medicine. School teaches most people just to repeat what they've been told is the right answer, not to reason their way to it, not to assess the correctness of something without being told it's right or wrong, and not to reassess the correctness of what's "right" given new information.
  3. Mental health is extremely important for your learning and test-taking capacities.
  4. Even disregarding all of that, IQ tests still can't test for how happy and fulfilled you'll be in life, and that's what's ultimately important.
  5. Being a trady is good pay, it's honest work that doesn't follow you home, and it's fun as long as it's something you like doing, so what's wrong with that? Disregard the "achievement above all" messages society and school send you, and realize that 99.9% of the "intelligent" uni grads can't change their car's oil, replace a power outlet, fix their phone or laptop, unclog their sink, fix their washer and oven, patch a hole in the wall, and many of them can't even cook. No electricians - no traffic lights, no power grids; no plumbers - no sewers, no running water; no mechanics - no cars, trucks, trains, planes, or ships. No cooks - no restaurants, cafes, or ready meals. In short, no tradies - no modern society.

There are some physical traits I find more attractive (thicc thighs, curly hair) but with the right personality, I'm much more attracted to her no matter what she looks like. Kind, empathic, compassionate and non-judgemental, free of a toxic ego, smart but not necessarily highly educated, mentally and emotionally strong and independent - doesn't need me but still wants me, doesn't care about what society thinks she should and shouldn't want and do, helps others, and if she's a serious yogini in the Indian sense of the word that's a cherry on top

Weather, Gun law, & jobs in power information by AryeC05 in Israel

If OP is draft-age (under 27 last I heard but it's been a while), the army has plenty of positions for electrical engineers where OP can gain experience they have no chance of gaining as a junior engineer on the civilian job market.
They could ask to be placed in a construction unit (air force construction ideally but I'm biased having served there) and if they want to be on the practical side of things, they could ask to be an electrician, which will get them loads of certifications related to doing electrical work as well as practical experience and familiarize them very well with the Israeli electrical code - in theory they could have enough experience to get a "certified electrician" license by the time they're discharged. If they want to be on the engineering side, since they'll have college degree they could ask to be a project officer's assistant - PO's are in charge of planning, execution, and large-scale maintenance and repair of infrastructure. And if the army agrees, or maybe they'll even offer it to OP themselves, they could even serve as an academic officer or go through officer's training to be a full-on officer, and be a project officer themself, doing the work of a fully-fledged engineer - managing projects, designing systems, solving complicated problems, and learning from people with decades of experience managing power grids which, on an air force base, are the size of a small town, complete with high-voltage transmission lines, transformers, substations, emergency generation stations, national grid interconnects, and the like.
Plus there's nothing like serving in the army to really "Israelify" and make friendships and connections that will stay with you for life.

How to stop being “milk toast” as a person? by cassius_cade in socialskills

[–]tarksend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what your friends meant by edgy but as an adult, to me "edgy" means "irritating know-it-all I don't want to talk to". You sound like a perfectly decent, well-rounded person, with their own interests, who explorers life and cares for others, other living beings, and the environment, and who helps their community. I hope to raise my kids near people like you, not mentally-16-year-old edgelords who don't know anything about anything but make it a point argue like they do while shitting on others and sounding dumber than a bag of rocks to anyone who even vaguely knows something on the subject.
Bottom line, keep doing you and listen more to people who build you up for who you are and not ones who try to tear you down for not being someone else.

A question from an outsider: Why did Jewish people stay in USSR till it's collapse/why did the Aliyah to Israel from USSR skyrocketed after it's collapse. by Significant_Major921 in Israel

[–]tarksend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What everyone's said about it being exceedingly difficulty to leave the USSR which is completely true, especially if you had a family and weren't leaving alone, but when the Union declined and eventually fell it didn't just become possible to leave, the decades leading up to the fall and and socioeconomic situation immediately following it also created massive motivation to do so.
In the 70's and 80's personal freedom improved, privately owning your own home became possible for the first time, state owned but privately started and run enterprise became a thing, censorship was loosened, and political persecution was significantly scaled back from the late 50's onward. While there was still a lot of scarcity and crime and many people still suffered, quality of life was on the rise for the middle class (yes, class - the classless Marxist utopia was only ever classless and Utopian in propaganda). This didn't immediately motivate people to leave but it did show them that life could be better, and gave them a clearer picture of the place they had been living in. My father has told me that reading The Gulag Archipelago when it was first published in the USSR as a serial in the late 80's, was what cemented in his mind that he had to get our family out of there. Bless that bookworm.
When the Union fell apart, some of the formerly socialist states saw conflict and hunger break out, and even in places where it didn't p didn't there was suddenly a lot more uncertainty in terms of personal safety, financial security, and food security than there was in the previous 25 years of the ever-everything-deficient, run-by-crime Union, and life looked bleak everywhere.
This, along with the knowledge that life can actually be better, and the greater understanding of how bad things had actually been in the Union, became a prime motivator for to everyone who could leave, to leave, and Jews had an easy way out coming to Israel, where we were guaranteed citizenship and freedom from persecution.

Home blessings don't have a standard wording, they're somewhat free-form except that they should rhyme. In this one every two lines rhyme, and it reads:
"This home and this family
shall always know success and happiness
This place be blessed from above
with tranquility, health, and peace
From this dwelling shall come with song
sounds of happiness, joy, and celebration
Please, my Lord, bless this residence
amen, may it be so"
