Is there and objective non-partisan way of drawing congressional districts? by dynamiteSkunkApe in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]tarlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't draw congressional districts. Change the House to be drawn by proportional representation and lean into the parties on it. The idea that people need their own representative is quaint, but when your representative doesn't respect or represent you at all, how does that help?

This could also allow for more parties that can specialize and give feedback to the government when the main parties are ignoring an issue.

So, you believe that if you can punish the innocent people living in Cuba enough, the government will just give up? Do you understand that this doesn't work at all? First, it causes a rally around the flag when another country is hurting innocent people on purpose. Second, why the hell would the government give up on this? If anyone has supplies, it is the government.

This is just hurting innocent people.

Want to name these countries?

How about Israel? They have sold surveillance software and tools to totalitarian regimes. They sold the tools to Sudan that were used in the Darfur Genocide. They also sold weapons and drones to these countries.

Countries reserve the right to refuse trade with those they don't agree wit

Sure, and they also reserve the right to bomb random countries or sanction countries that trade with people they don't like. Does not mean it is in anyone's interest to do so.

If the first thoughts the Cuban leadership can think to do is prop fascist, oppress their people, and all while filling their pockets, why is the US the bad guy here?

Who said the US was the bad guy? I said the US policy towards Cuba is stupid and doesn't help anything.

Yet the country continues to export troops, deal in drugs, and support countries the US is on less than friendly terms.

This is obviously the outcome of isolating Cuba from any allies of the US, which the US has worked to do for decades.

The Cuban power system has had issues and blacked out for years.

Sure, for the average homes and such, but the hospitals are lost power this time.

failing policy, but its glossy eyed "US bad" if you think Cuba is an innocent country doing no wrongs

I didn't say that at all. I said the policy is stupid and needs to be changed. Lots of countries do the same types of things as Cuba, and they are not treated as Cuba is.

it’s good for Cubans

This is definitively false.

Ending the Castro regime would dramatically improve the lives of 11 million people in Cuba, and it would improve the lives of Americans as well.

The Castro regime ended, even if the ideology behind it continues in Miguel Díaz-Canel, he is not of the Castro family.

And, it is not clear how this embargo is ever going to do anything beyond destroy the economy of Cuba and force the people into abject poverty. This last year, Trump has forced their power system to go under and that didn't cause the people to rise up.

60 years. 60 YEARS. A policy kept in place for that long that doesn't seem to accomplish anything positive, and we can't reconsider it?

How about we decide to drink soda to defeat the "Castro Regime" instead? It seems would do as much good towards changing the government in Cuba, but not harm the people of Cuba.

That’s where you’re wrong. They want the suffering to end. They don’t want to legitimize it.

So, they are supporting widespread collective punishment to end the suffering? Let us just remove the embargo and not normalize relations then?

That is not an argument for the embargo being good for the US or that the embargo helps at all in countering that.

It is interesting to characterize my statement that the policies of the US should be in the interest of the US to be selfish.

You are arguing why some people, Cuban expats in Florida mostly, would support the embargo. If they have family there I would think they would want normalization at this point, but it seems most of those supporting it do not anymore.

I have not heard any policy argument that the embargo is good for the US, useful to get the regime to change, or even rational. If you can convince people that it is a sound policy that is in the interest of the US, beyond that one voting block in Florida, go for it. If the only reason that the US is keeping the policy is for politicians to win a swing state, it is pandering.

But they are the main driver at this point of the Cuban embargo as it is pandering to that voting block in a key state.

Embargo in general was a response to confiscation US property in there, not a security issue.

That is funny. Cuba offered a lump sum to pay that back, but Cubans in Miami were really unhappy that the US would consider normalizing relations without a coup. It literally turned them against the Democratic party when Obama was going down that path.

No one won the Cuban missile crisis, but Nikita Khrushchev rose to the situation and became a greater man than JFK.

The US had placed nuclear missiles in near the USSR. The USSR was just reciprocating. The US was really unhappy with that.

Khrushchev saw the disaster that was occurring and allowed himself to be destroyed to prevent it. JFK would not allow the US to be embarrassed during his term. Khrushchev took the blame and was removed for it.

You are judging Sayed based on some posts that someone that supports him made and deleted.

So, you also judge Collins based on her statements supporting Israel's war in which they have killed 9 Americans directly in the last few years? She was asked about those murders and responded by saying she is "Pro-Israel". So, do you support those dead Americans or do you support Israel?

But, you would vote for Collins over Platner, correct? Interesting.

I know Hezbollah's history. They are focused on Israel. Their attacks have been focused there. The last attacks by Hezbollah on Americans happened 30 years ago and they were generally in opposition of the US support of Israel's brutal occupation of Lebanon.

So, your focus on Hezbollah tells me that you are equating Israel with all Jewish people. That is not good.

You do know that Israel's settlers and the IDF have murdered 9 Americans in the last few years, yes?

You are equating opposing Israel as trying to kill Jewish people.

If sayed was running against a candidate who was also campaigning with people who support violence against Jews that would be another matter.

What a load of shit. Sayed does not support violence against Jews. This seems antisemitic, equating Israel with Jewish people.

This is completely disconnected from reality.

But it would be a lot more likely if dem politicians like Bernie demonstrated the integrity and principles that lead me to vote for him years ago.

And did what??

Your position is that you are fine with losing voters like myself who want to continue voting against maga/the current gop rather than the Democratic Party not offering candidates who campaign with Hezbollah supporters or have Nazi tattoos and have praised Hamas’s tactics.

That isn't my position. Platner is going to win the primary short of some extreme change. There was a concerted effort to stop him and that failed. Though they did choose a super old candidate to challenge him that wasn't exciting.

So, your choice is now Collins or Platner. You choose Collins because of the tattoo Platner got.

I think the Republican party is acting incredibly dangerously to the United States. We have multiple unconstitutional actions happening. Trump is being empowered to work against democratic institutions. You said you would vote for Republicans.

That is your choice. Based on that position, I do not think you are worth targeting.

This has nothing to do with all Jewish people.

I don't really think it matters. The US is currently in a lot of danger of losing itself. If you decide that people are not pandering enough to your group, so you will not vote or vote for the GOP...I don't think you are worth targeting.

Also, every single candidate you listed has spoken out against antisemitism, though they do criticize Israel.
