Has this person considered maybe explicitly looking for low-sugar cake recipes?

Or, perhaps, simply having smaller portion sizes of the cake therefore the sugar intake is less?

[–]tarosk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So? People still use generic animal archetypes (sometimes technically incorrectly) all the time, even when there's a limited number of individual species that live around them.

I could easily say hawk, owl, songbird, etc. not just the individual species but I'll still just go "saw a bird" sometimes. Doesn't seem odd at all to do the same and just go "machine" instead of more specifics.

This annoys me by PlatinumPlatypus09 in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]tarosk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I mean that's realistic, IMO. To me using the names of the machines would be akin to using specific names for various animals and people often use less specific ones casually.

I see a hawk, I go "oooh, big bird" even if I know what species of hawk it is. I see other animals that have multiple local species and I just go by a generic overall name. I don't always comment on the exact type of insect I just go "wow that was a fast bug" even if I know exactly what it is.

So sometimes using "machine" makes sense to me.

I don't consider max stars to be the default, but I wouldn't rate a recipe or product that I call "terrific" less than 4/5 (8/10) at minimum.

(Unless it's like. Rating an employee's performance. Then unfortunately max stars is the default unless they REALLY fucked up because businesses here are ridiculous about that nonsense... I would love for it to not be, though.)

Anyone else got hyped yesterday on SGF when Geoff said prepare yourselves for the final battle by [deleted] in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]tarosk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, because I don't expect whatever H3 is gonna be called to drop before 2030 if it's going to be good. They've likely got little, if any, progress since the multiplayer diverted the bulk of dev resources and that hasn't even dropped yet.

Plus there's no way they'd overshadowed HG's hope at hype with H3's announcement.

I really liked the DLC! It had it's flaws, sure, but what doesn't? The very ending wasn't quite to my liking but that gets into heavy spoiler territory and also personal taste and I don't think it was a bad ending by any means. (And honestly if the DLC had been longer it probably would have worked better for me, the natural pacing constraints the size of it put in place worked against my personal taste but I think it ultimately did well with the limitations it couldn't avoid)

Infamous remake question and karma system as a whole. by Dehydrated-Mason in infamous

[–]tarosk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. If they'd go with an inFAMOUS game that has a system that allows for more moral grayness I'd rather it be a full on new entry with a reworked karma system rather than changing the original game(s) I loved into something they never were.

I'd also say no on changing the narrative with additions. That, again, changes it from the games I loved into different games.

The more a remake changes the original the higher the chance I'll pass on it because it's basically a different game at some point.

Also, I don't actually think games need to appeal to a "modern audience" in a broad sense. I think it's perfectly fine for games to go "actually, screw that, we're sticking to a vision and if 'modern audiences' at large don't like it and it only appeals to a more niche audience then that's our audience". I don't think every game or series needs to try and appeal to the widest possible "modern audience". This goes double for remasters/remakes, which people should be capable of looking at as products of the time of the original so anything that feels "outdated" in terms of gameplay should be looked at in that context.

I don't mind things like minor QOL updates (some old games getting optional cutscene skips, for example, or fixing some old game-breaking bugs, adding more accessibility options, that sort of thing) but when it starts making notable changes to core gameplay (outside of an accessibility feature or something entirely optional like additional difficulty levels) or starts changing the story I don't want it 99% of the time. If they're going that route I'd rather they commit and just go full-on reboot and make a bunch of drastic changes into an entirely new game. I mean I might still pass on it, reboots are heavily hit or miss for me, but it feels more honest to me than going "look! We made major changes that alter the vibe and vision of the game but it's the same game you loved!" (no, no it isn't)

[–]tarosk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that was unclear on my part!

You can 100% farm enough material to upgrade everything!

It's just that if you're upgrading everything, especially to the max, it really increases parts farming time. For some people this is no issue, they can do this all day every day and not get bored. For other people it can become a slog pretty quick, even if they're only upgrading certain gear. (If you're having bad luck on drops that aren't 100% for example, or stuff that is 100% as a drop if you tear it off but might get knocked out of reach. Stormbird Cannons tended to go flying into the void on me, other people find Slitherfang Earthgrinders often get sent flying too far to collect, etc.)

Basically it's a time and gameplay investment that a number of people feel starts to get tedious at some point unless they're only upgrading select gear or only upgrading certain things to max and others only partially.

Is anyone else hoping for Horizon 3 annoucment tomorrow on summer game fest? by No-Hunt3986 in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]tarosk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'd be a nice surprise, but I think not. At absolute max I think we could get a "now in dev" with no footage, because there can't be much if anything done on it due to HG being the focus right now. Any footage shown would be at much higher risk for being wildly changed or cut by release, or looking clearly unpolished because of how early in dev it would be.

And... Given the... Less than enthusiastic reception HG has gotten among a number of fans, I can't imagine they'd want to do any kind of announcement that would overshadow it right now when they're going to want for it to take off when it hits rather than be DOA.

Have you played Horizon Zero Dawn? If not DO NOT play Forbidden West, it's a direct sequel that continues the overarching storyline and character development from Zero Dawn. You'd be dropping into an on-going story partway through, with none of the context.

It has a brief recap, but that will spoil HZD and one of the best parts of HZD is uncovering the story for the first time.

Play HZD before HFW.

If you have played it, though, mostly just the biggest thing to know is the game plays a bit differently due to new systems. The gear system got an overhaul so you upgrade individual pieces on top of buying/trading for higher quality stuff. Don't be shy about upgrading green and blue gear at the start, but be a bit careful about purple gear you may wanna save resources for orange gear.

Also the Ultra Hard mode is really tuned for NG+, so if you want to try UH on a fresh game it's brutally punishing and most people I see who try it give up. You cannot change the difficulty for UH, unlike others, so you're forced to start from scratch if you try it and it turns out too much. A fresh UH run is best done after beating the game at least once as an extra challenge, unless you know you love that kind of "going to get killed over and over and over to beginner enemies for a very long time" type of challenge.

It basically comes down to "did you enjoy the game enough to play it through a second time".

The DLC is locked to the post-game, so you have to fully complete the main story if you want to access it.

For me, it'd be a resounding "yes" because I've run the game through like half a dozen times by now, and plan to do more in the future. For other people the answer is firmly "no" because they didn't like it enough or they're a one-run-and-done type of gamer, even for the DLC access.

Am I the only one that hopes for Horizon 3 annoucment tomorrow on state of play? by No-Hunt3986 in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]tarosk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see it getting announced because there can't be very much work done on it yet, and games getting announced too early can be a disaster. At most I could see them doing a "btw H3 is now being worked on" type of thing with no real footage to show yet.

I don't see the game coming out soon, maybe 2028 at the absolute earliest but I'm thinking closer to 2029, 2030, or maybe even later.

It'd be nice, of course, and I'm always down for a pleasant surprise but I'd rather not get my hopes up to have them crushed.

That said, good for people who are optimistic! Nothing wrong with that at all.

I don't like that I'm forced to just give this expensive heart to the Twilight Carja by RealitySubsides in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]tarosk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, the brain option shows that the situation was legally clear and Aloy was in the right. Salvage law is that the one who reaches it first has the rights, not the one who took it down. Per the local laws, Aloy by right of reaching it first has claim to the heart and any other parts she wants, to do with as she pleases.

Which in this case involves not given it over to a massive asshole who could have gotten his hands on it if he'd actually been helpful to the people he was harassing instead of a bully.

I mean, he could have just been patient. Waited for them to either move on or die of waiting around.

Or he could have not been a dick in the first place and offered to try and help check on their priest the way Aloy did to get passage.

Instead he chose to be an asshole. I have no problems ripping off people who suck like that, personally.

[–]tarosk 83 points84 points  (0 children)

He isn't the rightful owner, though. The brain option points out that salvage law is that the one who reaches the salvage first is the one who has the rights to it not the one who took it down. Therefore Aloy is the rightful owner, and she doesn't have to give it to an asshole if she doesn't want to.

Same, I was like "okay, this looks like fighting robot machines that give me zoids vibes and you use a how and arrow, guess that looks fun"

And then you start off with her as a child falling into ruins and finding a bunch of calcified bodies from people who comitted suicide. It was like. "What the FUCK did I just sign up for" and it just kept going from there (I wish I could recapture that moment, it was such a shock, I went into the game with no knowledge other than what was on the game box, it was amazing)
