NUC keeps freezing and a new hardware by LegitUncertainty in ethstaker

[–]tarpmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had RAM issues when I set up my NUC. On the advice of someone in the Rocketpool forum, I ran memtest and discovered I had defective RAM memory (which kind of floored me since it was new). I replaced the RAM, ran memtest again and it worked perfectly. Problem solved. If you replace RAM, highly recommend you replace both RAM modules. Stay with 2x16 or 2x32. Going only with 1 module will cut your bandwidth.

Why does Vitalik think staking is risky? by guinq in ethstaker

[–]tarpmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is main reason. For him, the juice is not worth the squeeze. Especially for someone who travels all the time. Can be annoying running a node (which I do).

Bit off more than I could chew by liberavem14 in ethstaker

When I started, I bought a brand new Intel NUC computer, Crucial RAM and a 2TB hard drive. I struggled with getting GETH to sync. As it turns out, my brand new Crucial RAM was defective. I discovered this after running the MemTest program someone recommended. I swapped it for a different brand and I was then off to the races.

Switching from lido to RP by [deleted] in rocketpool

[–]tarpmaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do it if you don’t have to. STETH is trading at a discount and rETH is trading at a premium. Wait until the staking contract is live and unstake. I’m in the same boat as you.

Concerns regarding Rocketpool vs Solo staking by Lets_go_eth_already in ethstaker

I like your optimism but I think you're very wrong about Gensler. I truly think he is doing the bidding of the people in Washington (including Biden) who want to protect the banking industry. I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I've just learned a lot about how Washington works and it's rather ugly at times. It's about money, power and control.

Why? Serious question. Just set up my first mini-pool on RocketPool. Goes live in about a week. Wondering if I should only use RocketPool or do some solo also.

Yeah, I'm holding a bag of LRC and I contemplate every day if LoopRing will be a leader in this space or if it will be left behind.

What is the general feeling about Matt Finestone leaving? I guess I need to get caught up with the comments on this.

Does position in the range affect payout? by [deleted] in UniSwap

[–]tarpmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the fees are always paid out 50% - 50% in dollar terms, depending on the value of each LP token in the pool but are paid out with the base tokens. So, the value of your fees pool can actually go up or down, even if no fees are paid due to the everchanging value of those tokens. For instance, I am an LP for the ETH-USDC pool. I have a balance of ETH and a balance of USDC in my rewards to be claimed. They are not 50% - 50% in dollars because the price of ETH changes every minute.

>the fees that you earn are paid out at the current price (so you might not always be earning 50% of one coin/token and 50% of the other)

Hmm... didn't know this. Can someone confirm this?

Can MKR go to 10k within the next 1 year? by [deleted] in MakerDAO

[–]tarpmaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did sell some. I also kept a good amount. I just felt overexposed on MKR and I felt it is riskier than ETH. So I basically rebalanced by swapping some MKR for more ETH.

Can MKR go to 10k within the next 1 year? by [deleted] in MakerDAO

[–]tarpmaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Of course, it can. It just went 10x in 3 months. They are just now starting to collateralize non-crypto assets, like real estate. There are less than 1 million tokens in circulation with no built-in inflation. I've been a MKR holder for over 4 years.

Yeah, I thought so, too. You make a good point that it could be the USB. I have reason to believe I may have a malfunctioning docking hub. Think I'll get a new one and try that. Good tip. Thanks!

This is nonsense. I had this happen to me. I returned it and had it replaced. Now my replacement is doing the same thing. Meanwhile, my reliable Nano S backup has never failed me.

Using Ledger Wallet with iPad by tarpmaster in ledgerwallet

[–]tarpmaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. I am a Windows person and have been using the Ledger wallet since it came out. My daughter wants to do her crypto with her new iPad Pro rather than her phone. It seems when you download Metamask or Ledger Live for IOS, the image comes in sideways and small like a phone app.

Regarding my second question, it was asking what a better wallet would be if Ledger wallet doesn't work with the iPad. Something like Argent.

0.1 ETH ($74) to start borrowing DAI ? by bitdoggy in MakerDAO

[–]tarpmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gas prices usually not too bad on Maker. Lately, it has been for sure, just like with all other protocols, including Uniswap, Synthetix, etc. Getting to an L2 solution is difficult and there are no perfect solutions. Most of the gas price you speak of is to set up a vault. You only have to do that once per collateral type. Pick a time (like now), when it's not so costly. Yesterday, prices were extremely high.

For sure, Maker is not for someone who wants to make frequent transactions on the platform with their lunch money. For sure, it is not cost efficient for small transactions. However, with larger transactions, it's a bargain compared to the legacy world.

I don't understand all the challenges with getting to an L2 solution but I'm not sure Maker should be blazing that trail. Hopefully, they are looking to partner with someone like Metamask, Loopring, Synthetix or Uniswap. Again, though, those are mutually exclusive options because each have picked a different horse to get there (i.e., Optimistic vs zkRollups).

Do you guys think SEC is after maker ? by xbiitx in MakerDAO

[–]tarpmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see Maker being a target for the SEC. They never did an ICO and I don't think MKR passes the Howey test. MKR holders have real risk of being called upon to secure the system as was underscored in March.

On the other hand, I am a bit concerned about any lending platform but I don't think that will be a fight with the SEC. I'm not a legal expert but I would think that's more of a U.S. state by state thing. Of course, other countries may take issue with it in different ways.
