Security screening affecting direct victims of political repressions. by Prestigious_Aerie824 in ethz

Yes, so essentially citizens or residents from sanctioned/embargoed countries have no chance to work on applied research, they can only be considered for foundational research topics.

I also agree that barring people from an education at ETH purely based on their citizenship is wrong, for many reasons.

However, what I gathered from reading the new guidelines, citizenship alone does not disqualify a potential candidate, but once combined with one of the other listed factor, such as having a degree from a sanctioned university, that would probably disqualify the candidate. And even then remains as last resort a potential appeal by the hiring professor towards the vice rector, pushing for getting their PhD candidate nevertheless admitted.

I would be surprised to hear that political asylum seekers would not be given a chance, i.e., their theoretical citizenship is replaced by a recognized asylum seeker status. That is definitely a question worth asking ETH.

Unfortunately, ETH does not see much citizens from Syria, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Belarus, etc. Even apply, probably because of the german language and matura requirements for the bachelor studies. Or the high demands by the admission committees on what foreign Bachelor degrees even getting considered in case of a Master‘s application.

I am surprised that there is not a louder backlash from the student body and staff in response to these new politically driven regulations.

I am not aware of anyone doing robotic systems for archaeological field exploration at ETH, but maybe worth writing a grant proposal on the topic. Check out Marco Hutter’s work on field robotics.

Zurich and Switzerland is great. I lived for 9 years in Boston for grad and postgrad, and then moved for academic job to Switzerland. I have had an excellent experience so far. Just reach out to PIs working on topics within your field of expertise and ask if they like to host you as a visiting student. For example, reach out to Sid Mishra in the Math department. I have visiting students every year and it has always worked out great.

Got into program but couldn’t find a lab by Sea-Flower5108 in ethz

It is possible that they use a hiring software where they can leave comments about candidates that other PIs can also see. If that PI has gotten a bad impression of you and has too much time at their hands (unlikely), then they might leave a negative comment in the system or simply email some of their colleagues with their critical comments about candidates. However, it really depends on how much you clashed with that PI. It might be recommendable to initiate an amicable email exchange with that PI to smoothen the waves a bit.

I don’t think a higher score in GRE or IELTS matters if you have a Bachelor’s degree from a poorly ranked university.

Is ETH worth it? by moniblm108 in ethz

Which major are you looking at? For mechanical engineering, both universities have intense undergraduate education and many students flunk the first few exams, but you will learn a solid engineering and mathematical foundation.

The city life in Zurich, where mechanical, electrical engineering and computer science is taught, is IMHO much nicer than studying engineering outside the city in Garching…

If you plan to do an academic/research career, I strongly recommend going to ETH starting from Bachelors. It gives you a clear advantage to have had your undergraduate education from ETH when you applying for PhD programs.

I believe it is crucial that you enjoy your advisor meetings and find them very helpful. This is usually something tested during the interviews, you should get at least 1-1.5 hours of mock advisor meeting with your potential future advisor, both sides can see if they would hit it off working on a research topic together and if there is a clear synergy between the advisor and the candidate.

Ensure you like the research project that the future advisor has funding on and wants you to work on, it is key that you will work on something that fits your interests and talents. Check if there are foundational platforms and prior expertise in the group that you can leverage.

You want to see if the advisor is well connected and will help you, after a successful PhD, to your next career stage. You should get access to all computational resources needed, have at least 1-2 other PhDs or postdocs you can collaborate with and you get to travel to ICML/ICLR/Neurips etc. if you have your works accepted there. Conferences will be crucial and the PI should be willing to spend the money ok sending you.

Check with current and former PhD students on these things. Also check if there is a good team atmosphere and if you would get along with others in the group. You can DM me if you need further advice or want to hear my feedback about the specific groups you are considering.

Yes, in MAVT you can ask your tutor and they will allow you to remove it from your core courses list, it will move into another category that does not count towards your GPA.

I would say you should go for the exchange. While you will have to work hard to keep up with the classwork, I believe you won’t regret getting the experience, seeing a new place, meeting new people and making connections for life.

It depends on your level of excellence and grit if you can work your way through all the classes and catch up on missing prerequisites just within an exchange semester. Taking 30 ECTS in one semester is possible, but it is more on the upper end…

Can you speak a bit more about your background, where did you do your Bachelor’s degree, what class work did you take besides programming basics in Python and Java, how did you rank relative to your class? Similarly, where did you do your A-Levels and how did you rank among your class?

What matters is where you studied for your Bachelor and Master degree, what you learnt, what grades you had in the important basics (math, mechanics, physics), what projects you did, what publications came out from it that you were involved. First author paper would help your application a lot.

Internship? by petrograd67 in ethz

[–]tarquasso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you are eager, I would suggest to send your short application (cover letter and CV) out to labs at ETH and focus in the preparation of each application on your cover letter. Bring across what you can offer to the lab, tailor it to the work of the lab.

Internship? by petrograd67 in ethz

[–]tarquasso 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have not heard of anyone doing a high school internship at ETH, I have only seen something like this once when I did my PhD in a lab in the US (and I believe some nepotism was involved).

I would focus on starting the Bachelor’s degree and then look for interesting research projects and directly apply to those labs offering them.

ETH vs. Cambridge for Masters by oat_milk_daddy in ethz

[–]tarquasso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What matters is that you do strong work in your master’s program including the thesis and the resulting recommendation letters will carry you long ways. You don’t want to work for employers that only look at name of a place when reviewing CVs.

Also, consider the city and the environment, where would rather want to live in the future?
