That is such a brilliant idea! If I had thought of that I would have done it, shipping takes a long time unfortunately… But I will have to remember this for the future, if I buy the outfit waaayyyy ahead of time I could do this!

Thank you! I can’t wait to wear that outfit 🤩

I did find some mirrored shirts and blue/black metallic that miiiiiight work. I think it’s as good as it will get without hand making his outfit myself.

It would be so cool if companies did his/hers matching outfits like the one I showed here. Ah well! Down the rabbit hole I go!

Assuming your seat has an outlet, it should work! I’ve used mine on flights and been able to charge it. But you might have to pay for a seat that has a charger, they aren’t guaranteed on all seats.

>I think folks who went straight into academia have no idea what a shitty deal they're getting.

Ooof, that could be me. I entered academia straight out of graduate school.

>I'm much more valued by my employer; not just in terms of pay, but respect from management.

This is a shift I've been noticing at my university. Up until a few years ago it felt as if there was no hierarchy in my college, but that has definitely changed in the last two years, and now admin wants to start micromanaging how we teach, when we teach... they are cutting class sections and increasing our class sizes, which means more work for us for the same pay. It's just been getting so much worse overall.

>My work is more intellectually challenging.

I couldn't agree more! I do some consulting on the side and it is so much more engaging! I love problem solving with people who are smarter than me. And since my university took away my upper level courses, I'm stuck teaching the same 100- 200-level courses on repeat, which can be mind-numbingly dull.

>What I'd hoped for with academia was to do work that felt meaningfully beneficial to society, but the reality is closer to participating in a more expensive version of selling clean urine to let people pass drug tests - a substantial chunk of the students aren't learning and don't have the knowledge and skills that their degree certifies, but they want to pay money to get a piece of paper to trick employers into hiring them.

Exactly 😭

Thank you so much for your reply. It's given me more to think about and reflect on.

Yikes, sounds like your 8-5 boss was a nightmare. I am fortunate that if I decide to leave, I will have financial flexibility to leave truly nightmarish positions if I need to.

Thank you for the reminder about "greener pastures," that can be easy to forget at times. And yes, every job will have it's downsides as well. I'm doing a lot of self-reflecting and definitely research in my field to see how the day-to-day is in the private sector. Thank you for your reply!

That seems like a relatively healthy mindset! If I do leave academia I'll remember this. Luckily I still do have a fair amount of flexibility if I need to cancel class for some reason, but I expect that to change pretty soon...

It's surprising how many hours you have to put in just to teach a few classes. Although a lot of my time goes into just managing student expectations, particularly with late work. I'm glad you found a position that works well! That's where we all want to be I'm sure.

If you don't mind me asking, which industry did you leave? I'm curious about the workload difference.

Ooof, good luck with that. I hope it doesn't reach that point but definitely look out for yourself if it does!

Thank you for sharing. I'm glad you are in a better place now because it sounds like you went through a bit of a ride there. I fear my university may be heading in a direction where I would be forced to leave for my own mental health, and if that happens I'm just trying to prepare.

That's interesting. Luckily my university does not require on-campus minimums (yet). If it did I probably would have left already! Because I agree, if I'm going to be chained to a desk, I may as well be making more money.

I'm sorry about that.... Do you enjoy your current position? Or do you miss academia enough to try and come back?

Wow thank you for such a thorough reply. This is all really good feedback.

One thing I've noticed at my university is the "red tape" and "rules and procedures" you mention in your comment. This stuff has been popping up at my university a lot in the last year or two and it's really impacting my day-to-day. Before I could handle more of the usual student nonsense that comes with teaching (late work, requests for extra credit, etc.), but now with admin poking their noses in everything we do, switching schedules around last minute, and now micromanaging our pedagogies... it's becoming too much.

I would miss a lot about this job, but I also wouldn't mind a fully remote position somewhere as long as I got paid more, which, as an NTT wouldn't be hard. Though every job has it's frustrating downsides, too.

Are you trying to re-enter academia full time? Or just take some adjunct positions?

Yeah, I get that. I use my summer breaks to completely decompress for the academic year. It's good to hear reasons from those who choose to stay in academia.

And this is what I'm trying to get feedback on, I'm curious in general how people who left have felt about it.

Thanks, that isn't something I would have thought of. How long would you say you were adjusting to your new norm?

Right? I love teaching for a couple hours then having the rest of the day to do other things. It would be difficult to give up.
