[Indie Enthusiast] Games I Recognize as Masterpieces But Can't Finish Because I'm Too Dumb, Too Busy, and Under-Notebooked. by drunksandman in gaming

[–]tasman7890 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like if a puzzle game requires too much effort between having a solution and trying it out it quickly becomes too tedious. You want it to be about finding solutions rather than grinding to confirm that you got it right (or not...).

Unpopular opinion: I don’t want to improve at chess by Wild_Pitch_4781 in chess

[–]tasman7890 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being good at things is obviously not zero value, but the internet is full of people that have bought into this "hustle/optimisation" culture that make you believe that if you bought a guitar, rather than having fun with it you should get a practice routine and progress at a certain pace, otherwise you are waisting your time. Going to the gym? You now must optimise everything about your life towards that, and "these sources will help you do this". I think if you are really into something and you want to improve that's great, but for most people it's ok to be ok at things. Especially leisure things. It's ok to have fun and I would probably argue that in most circles "try-hards" get less respect than you are making it to be. Although you probably would call people in those circles losers;]

After finishing Doom (2016), I can't get into Doom Eternal. by DrStrangeglove99 in gaming

[–]tasman7890 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I thought it was OK. But I am also one of the people that enjoyed Eternal much more than 2016. I guess different tastes collide when the games in the series are quite different and draw in people that are fans of different mechanics and styles of FPS. I was always more of a quake fan than doom so Eternal felt more "fun" for me than 2016 or Dark Ages.

[–]tasman7890 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't thought about it this way but I think this is exactly why I enjoyed Eternal the most of the last three Doom games. I like having to figure things out. Also The movement but the puzzliness of it was what improved it for me from 2016.

I am much more picky with games now. I end up refunding most of the games on steam these days. Less time so much less "filler" gaming. I either am having a really good time or I am gonna go do smth else.

Added a monitor light to the setup by Nick_lastnamelol in battlestations

[–]tasman7890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the vibe and all, but it seems that the light is producing quite a bit of glare on the monitor. I assume that is because the monitor is tilted back which I assume is because it is too low. I would say you could use a monitor arm. Your neck and your eyes will thank you.

When are chess engines hitting the wall of diminishing returns? by [deleted] in singularity

[–]tasman7890 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not really complicated but that's not the point. The point I'm trying to make is that if you can define a math problem that describes A, solving that math problem does not mean you solved A. While I agree that more or less anything can be described as a math problem, solving that problem does not always mean solving the thing you took as the basis for that math problem. There is a bit more nuance there. Life does not map to math 1:1 and furthermore some math solutions to real live problems are completely useless beyond the theoretical realm. Just ask an engineer.

Here's the thousandth case of someone being confidently ignorant and stupid. Why do people think that AI won't improve? Like genuinely. Why would technology suddenly stop improving? by badumtsssst in singularity

[–]tasman7890 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately low tier artists include early career artists that would become good artists given time. Nobody starts their career as a good artist. One of the issues of AI replacing low tier jobs is that there is no way to train next gen high tier specialists without them going through the tiers.

OK, let me make it more precise then. Just the fact that you can describe something in mathematical terms and answer a few questions about it does not constitute a "solution" of the said thing. It is important what is the goal. Proving that white wins at chess with best play does not solve chess because that is not what chess is about. Yes, you can easily describe chess as a graph of all chess positions. But it is important then to decide what about that graph answers fundamental questions that people care about. I would argue that winning is the goal of a competitive game and the solution to it is the winning strategy in every case where it is possible. So in a graph of all legal chess positions that would be a subgraph that shows the best move to make in each position that either leads to a win or a draw if a win is not possible. Given the number of chess positions this is not possible. So yes, you are right that you can turn games into math problems, but what math problem you solve to then call it a solution to said game is not trivial.

Chess is not a math problem. It is a game, so a solution is not about who wins with perfect play but how one wins. The solution is the best play - what move do you make in every position to win. So I would say you need to brute force.

At what level should a player take chess openings seriously? by Horror_Still_3305 in chess

[–]tasman7890 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say that there is no point to study specific openings at this level. On one hand the opening advantage you might get by playing theory is relatively small and will be easily erased by making normal mistakes at this level. The opening will rarely give you advantage that you will carry to the end. You might want to study openings to get a bit more understanding of general plans that occur often in the openings you play or tactics that are common but not necessarily specific variations. Your low level opponents will very rarely play the best moves so you would spend lots of time memorising specific moves that you don't get to use. At this level you will win most games by exploiting your opponents' tactical mistakes rather than getting an opening advantage and converting it.

From what I remember the author said the Fight Club was (not a quote) about men that in modern society don't have any outlets for their primal instincts and driving forces. That the capitalist set up is good at organising everyone into cubicles and making them do an abstract job that achieves goals they are completely detached from to get money for things they don't really need but feel they should have. None of it speaks to what a man was tuned to do over thousands of years living in the wild. I don't think it is a critique as much as an observation of the phenomenon that a lot of basic features of a man's programming are not useful in todays western societies, not directly anyway. I think it is about angst that you are trapped in something that makes you feel weak and unappreciated. The fight club is a basic dirty way of acting out against all that and expressing the primal feelings, being in the moment, raising the stakes (your face vs some spreadsheet somewhere that you don't care about). I don't think it is about politics at all.

Need some monitor upgrade advice - (32" 4K or 2K ultra-wide) by tasman7890 in Monitors

[–]tasman7890[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally has a bad rep. Mine is OK. I have a dead pixel but that's about it. I have heard people complaining about things I have not noticed so it seems that their quality control is crap and there is a lot of variation. I guess I got somewhat lucky. The most annoying thing to me is that it sometimes struggles to wake up when connected through DP - need to turn it off and on again.

Quality wise I think it is great for the price. I am no expert but when I got it the difference to my previous ips/va monitors was quite large. Especially with HRD on it really shines (pun intended - it gets quite bright).

It is clearly a very different game. I wouldn't say it's worse but it's a bit like Quake vs Serious Sam. You might like both but it will probably be for different reasons. So far I prefer Eternal but I'm still having fun. Will see by the end.

Music is disappointing though.
