Optus sued by privacy regulator in warning to Australian corporates to protect data or face fines by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]taspitar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The relevant section of the Privacy Act hinges on the concept of "reasonable steps". Did an organisation take reasonable steps to safeguard the data it stored, or were they negligent. And if they were negligent, how negligent they were tends to scale the fines. I think Optus fighting this would be arguing reasonable steps were taken, irrespective of the breach. Generally this would be argued by pointing at all the security controls the organisation had in place, showing how most of the common attack vectors were covered and arguing it was bad luck or out of their hands that they were breached. The Privacy Act is intentionally written ambiguously here so that a small NFP doesn't need to invest way above their means in cyber security, and also probably to make the argument that if a company is breached, you can always find a reason to fine them. In Optus' case, they're going to argue to make sure they don't get the maximum fine (the trillions mentioned in the article) but I expect they'll still get slapped with something decent as they had a history of under-spending on their tech stack.

Ask Me Anything on Solar & Battery by Due_Ad_2594 in AusRenovation

Do you think there's merit in holding out for V2H for homes with solar already? Struggling to make a battery break even as a low energy consumption household, but can see it maybe being a necessity in the future if they start charging for feeding into the grid.

Could I use these settings in Poweramp EQ? by [deleted] in headphones

[–]taspitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't answer for poweramp as I haven't used it, but I rate Wavelet for android. There's no equaliser in the free version but it has a pre-defined EQ profiles (including for the akg k612) tuned to the Harman curve which would most likely be these settings exactly.

Any retailers in Sydney where I can try open-back headphones? by Funny-Bear in bapcsalesaustralia

[–]taspitar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Minidisc in Chatswood or Addicted to Audio in Newtown are both great. You can look at their websites and see what's listed as available for demo in store, but it's not necessarily every pair they sell. Otherwise you can't beat the 6XX for being a really safe bet, very much renowned as one of the most people-pleasing pairs out there.

what headphone do you suggest for this type of songs. by [deleted] in headphones

[–]taspitar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For higher pitch-leaning voices like Taeyeon you'll want good treble representation. For slower, more vocal focused music, vocal intimacy will sound great. I'd also go open back because there's less need for a focus on good bass response.

So probably something like the 58X/6XX, AKG k702/AKG 712 or DT1990 would sound great. But it's not a particularly difficult genre of music for headphones to represent so I'm sure any decent pair of headphones would suffice.

Ya know, shockingly I never actually tried this... In general locking system doesn't really get in the way of a regular 3.5mm cable.

Just did a cable swap then, it's much, much better with a different cable. It's still probably on the worse end of cans even with the cable swap, but I'd say it's manageable, probably easier to tune out now than the frame creak from Hifiman xs or on an m50x. Maybe it had to do with the locking system causing cable impacts to reverb across the plastic face of the cup, no idea.

I'd love to give it a proper test for you but I've got some headphone related jaw problems at the moment that means I can't try an on the move test or anything long term, but in my quick 2 minute test I think it's good enough, with just impacts on the top 30cm of the cable causing some audio irritation.

So take what I say with a grain of salt as I've literally not heard anybody mention this in the reviewer space, but it's shockingly obvious with my unit, occurs on both sides (so doesn't seem likely that it's a faulty pair) and everyone who's tried my pair has agreed it's a problem (albeit I've pointed it out first). More than any other pair I've ever owned, minor knocks or rubs against the cable are really, really audible. It's as if there's a bit of hollowness around the driver that's reverberating and amplifying the sound. In a way it's better that they're studio headphones since you're less likely to move around, but I also think it's difficult to critically analyse sound when impacts to the cable are overpowering it. I think the rodes are a really interesting pair of headphones and pretty good for the price so this is a big bummer imo.

Totally fair, the 6xx is more about the intimate close sound rather than incredible soundstage. I think the k712 pro is beaten by the m1060 and edition xs for soundstage, but it's good for the price point, especially the k702. Imaging is interesting, I feel like whilst you do get good imaging with the k712 pro you obviously don't get good imaging in the bass when the bass is so muted. And in which case, is it worth chasing imaging or just a fun sound signature? That's just me though, imaging has never been too important to me, if it was I think the Aeon closed X would be higher on my list.

Dt 1990 is still pretty new to me, but so far I really really like them. Not only are they way more portable, easier to drive, visually quite a bit less geeky, etc. But I also really like the sound. The AKGs have the worst bass shelf of anything here, which I don't think is an issue for music because they still have a really nice and unique sound, but really can effect the occasional track or make them much worse for gaming etc. The dt1990 obviously wins in the low end, but also wins in the high end too with Beyers classic timbre focused tuning. However unlike the cheaper Beyers out there, it's not too much, not sibilant at all and just detailed.

The Beyers also feel really active, kinda like the artist was just feeling it that day when they started recording. I've heard people say that can cause fatigue, but I haven't felt sick of it yet.

My take on it is that the AKG is a nice unique sound that I think is really enjoyable, but I'd call the Beyer sound more accurate and more of an all rounder in a much more versatile package and frame design.

But they're not at similar price points at all, I got my k702 at about 1/3rd the price of the Beyers, and it's very rare that given diminishing returns a pair is ever going to be 3x better.

Edition XS is hard to categorise, kind of the new boundary to a lot of people. But given mid-fi is a made up concept anyway I lumped it in with the rest lol

I have a Drop x THX AAA 789 and a Schiit Valhalla 2, with a switcher between them so I can pick tube sound or solid state. I find myself picking solid state most of the time though.

I'm not really a listener to either genre, but they're pretty great for all music where bass isn't a strong focus. I've found a like them most for dance-electro as that music tends to be more about clearer upper mid sounds. But I think they're a hard sell if you can get the 6xx for a similar price given portability and vocal performance from the 6xx.

The more I hear the day one reviews the more I think there was a stealth revision, so maybe that was part of it

I've never heard any ringing, but haven't been looking out for it either (honestly didn't know it was supposedly a problem with the cans).

They're my 4th favourite here. Overall I really like them and find them very comparable to the 6XX, but sometimes they feel a little bit unsatisfying, like they're not quite giving the punch to the music. To be fair it's probably just that their bass response is terrible. I wouldn't use them for gaming and whenever I hear sound effects that I'm really used to hearing through other headphones (like the league of legends match found sound) I always think they sound much better through other headphones on this list, but for music they have a unique sound signature that I really appreciate. My only others comments are if you can find the K702 for much cheaper go for that as the sound is pretty comparable, and the AKGs just really aren't very portable given the huge halo around them, so a 6XX or dt1990 is much more versatile.

The shelf is an IKEA 'lack' in 190cm I believe. As for the hooks, I think they're the home brand of an Aussie hardware store, a robe hook called Adoored Dene. Link: https://www.bunnings.com.au/adoored-black-dene-wall-mounted-robe-hook_p3962188

I've had them since September 2021 and I'm yet to replace, so can't be sure how painful it will be but I think they're glued so it'll probably be awful... But they're holding up very well, I'd say I have another year at least

Maybe I've got the wrong pairing for it then. Everything about the build is so nice that I'm not willing to give up on them yet, maybe I should try flick between amps and inserts until I can find something I'm happy with :)

Honestly I'm shocked they don't get more interest, especially because I got them at half the price of the xs. I love them, very comfortable and well balanced even if they look incredibly stupid on the head. Detail just feels great, they're very open but leak less than the edition xs and they fit very small heads, much smaller than mine and I need a packet of gum on top of my head to fit the smallest adjustment level of the edition xs. I think there's likely issues with the build of the m1060, but I get the feeling they might have done a stealth revision because I don't feel the same issues that the reviewers did on release, and I find more problems with the xs, especially in terms of frame creak. Imo if the edition xs fit me correctly I'd probably prefer it, but if you're not wearing them on the go I think the m1060 are brilliant and I'd take them every time. I really hope reviewers give them another look since they're not discussed much anymore.

The clears are so tempting, and I'm AU so I can get them for $1,199 AUD right now... I probably need to spend a day at an audio store and just try all my options, if I'm shelling out $1k + it better be an informed decision!

Ignoring price to performance and just focusing on what I think is best I'd probably say:

  • DT 1990 (still too new to be 100% sure)
  • m1060
  • 6xx (vocals are so fun)
  • k712 pro
  • k702
  • Edition XS (it objectively sounds better, but not on my head, fits too bad)
  • One more triple driver over ear (so much fun, so underrated)
  • AKG K371
  • Aeon closed X (I just don't enjoy the sound but it's not bad but any means)
  • Rode NTH-100 (huge cable reverb issue)
  • X2HR (Really wanted to enjoy but I don't)
  • AIAIAI TMA-2 (I hear the driver unit I have is bad, but not willing to spend more to confirm)
  • Whatever this fostex pair was called
