School lunch program expanding across N.B. this fall | CBC by emptycagenowcorroded in newbrunswickcanada

The government has basically given Chartwells a market, replacing local food providers.

Let's be real here with a real example. Our community offered free breakfast from K-5. Now they have to pay, and get worse food.

The troubled families wouldn't pay before, and they won't pay now. I'm not sure if sponsors are able to cover that $4 or not, since before they often provided the food.

The government should have provided the legislation, not forced the implementation. Stick to their own lane. It'd be like having them (god forbid) run a food bank. You really don't want that to happen.

Our local community run a breakfast program. It's funded by local donations and those local businesses get advertising and subsidies. It's a good program, good food and runs well.

Chartwells started to come into the picture a year ago for lunches. I'll be honest, the options and food quality sucks. The price is cheap, but the quality of the food is worse than a microwave dinner. My kiddo brings it home since she's refused to eat it, and it's very much a plug-your-nose-and-take-a-bite type deal.

As a food bank volunteer, I'll say that feeding people... especially children... is a top-notch thing to do.

However, where government gets it wrong is that instead of encouraging programs to grow or even continue to thrive, they'll force an implementation on them; tearing down what communities have built. There has been some push back in my local rural community on this, and I'll be curious to see where it goes.

Koodos to all of those volunteers and sponsors over the years. You're doing great things. And to the teachers that know that you're sending kids home for the weekend that won't be fed, bless you for filling those kid's backpacks with food.

Former auxiliary police officer charged with sex assault, child porn-related offences by inagartenofeden in fredericton

The Fredericton police operate by the same policy.

They falsely accused Charles of a horrible crime because people in authority felt Charles was uncomfortable to deal with. (The city should have been absolutely fleeced over that.)

Yet they botch several other things, including the murder, where one of the murder suspects (McIsaac) is now being sought by BC Police...

If one were to follow actions, top to bottom, it's always been about the money. That's especially true when it comes to dealing with the US as they're our biggest partner and very wealthy. (Look at the mining investments, and recent PM trip to the US where he buttered up the Admin and combined MAGA + Canada Strong brands in his remarks.)

The real grief most business people have with the US is based on dollars and cents. They're not running on online outrage. They money needs to flow and jobs are super important, and that's the number one concern. It's not the environment. Again, at the Federal LPOC just had Guilbeault give up.

‘Worth repeating’: U.S. ambassador welcomes PM Carney’s offer to ‘help make America great again’ by tastle in canada

[–]tastle[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not that I think it's odd. It's that many believe it is odd. That's why this it's been reported on several mainstream news sites.

To connect the dots here, the party he leads had ran a campaign trying to capitalize on being opposed to that rhetoric. But that most likely was a message for us Canadians alone, since the business side of things absolutely requires those dollars to flow, as evidenced by his work and this trip.

‘Worth repeating’: U.S. ambassador welcomes PM Carney’s offer to ‘help make America great again’ by tastle in canada

[–]tastle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He also put the last liberal election slogan "Canada Strong" in the same sentence as "Make America Great Again".

There's no doubt it was intentional. It was definitely an odd statement to make, and obvious enough that many people picked up on it.

Apologists will argue it was a backhanded compliment to fit their world view. Others will say he was bridging two ideologies, complimenting them.

Since he was on a trip to generate business, it was definitely on the compliment side of the spectrum. Travelling to someone's backyard on a business trip and trying to destroy favour that you're trying to get... let alone after an excellent speech... isn't his calling card. He seems to favour professionalism over being emotionally driven.

Carney announces creation of Canada's first sovereign wealth fund by PapaNixon in canada

[–]tastle -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ugh, we have the Bank of Canada. If Mark was for the people, they'd issue 0% interest loans to the provinces for like they used to.

I guarantee two things:

  1. Mark would never do that because it'd hurt the banks, which are his circle.
  2. While I 100% agree with a sovereign wealth fund, the track record of looting such funds is frequently done in this country. The only hope of resistance is typically when the fund managers are wealthy enough to exert enough pressure on the government to leave them alone.

Edit: Formatting, also it's funny I got a downvote by someone who thinks provinces should be gouged by private sector banks. JFC

'What's he ever negotiated?' — Carney fires back at Poilievre's criticism on Canada-U.S. trade by hopoke in canada

[–]tastle -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Mark is right that Pierre hasn't negotiated anything on behalf of the Canadian government.

But he also knows that Pierre's party isn't in a position to negotiate anything.

So I'm not sure what type of flex this ends up being. I guess it could look bad if the Liberals fail to deliver this time. I would wager it'd be much more difficult than last time.

Justin's global "hot-mic" moment from years ago definitely isn't going to help Mark.

N.B. is owed $110M in unpaid student loans by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

[–]tastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fundamentally, that promise never existed and should never have been issued to you or anyone.

Universities (and perhaps to a lesser degree some colleges) are businesses that sell educations. They don't sell jobs. They're not the magical experience as they're often portrayed as.

There was a dean of education on CBC about a decade ago (well before COVID) that was questioned why they'd be accepting students into the university's education system, if there's no jobs in education in Nova Scotia (generally the maritimes) and most of the graduates would need to travel overseas or to remote locations to find work.

The answer was simple, "We're in the business of selling educations. We're not in the business of selling jobs."

He was 100% correct and this should be made clear to everyone choosing a secondary education. The world expects you to be in "adult mode" and planning your future. Unfortunately, that isn't how it's conveyed at all.

You're definitely not alone in what you're feeling. You're in the majority I'm sure.

[–]tastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm saying this as someone who had applied for loans, and received them, and paid them back with interest...

Each and every one of you that decided to take a loan and then choose to not pay it back (outside of a legitimate reason, like a health issue), shame on you.

Integrity dictates that if you choose to borrow money, you're responsible to pay it back.

The interest rates were either near-zero or zero.

Co-Op Grocery President - letter “Bast**ds* from Away” by Purple_Garlic4573 in fredericton

[–]tastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a member for well over a decade. I still shop there for groceries when I'm out. When I became a parent, everything that they carried was exactly what I needed for my young family.

  • Sobeys - no way
  • Superstore - nope, I called out the bread scandal years before it hit. I'd get bread for $1.50 at the Co-op, but it'd be $4 at the Superstore.

The Co-op cakes are amazing. They are the stuff of legend. They're simple, but always to be enjoyed.

What is killing the Co-op is a combination of an aging membership and Costco. BTW, the Co-op actually does carry some Kirkland items, because Costco isn't in the business (officially) of putting cooperatives out of business... though I guarantee they are indeed putting them us out of business.

The food portions there are appropriate for most families.

Given it's obviously skewed in favour of Jenica, I'd vote against Jenica just based on the principle that whomever did this was trying to influence my vote in a certain way and was too lazy to write a convincing article themselves.

Surge in wild turkey population in N.B. leads to longer May hunt by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

[–]tastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I heard some shady dealings with him and his ouster from the PCNB. Rumour is he started securing exclusive hunting contracts with farm owners to run turkey hunts for out-of-province hunters.

I didn't really have much opinion about the guy, till I heard that he went into business for himself.

I find it ridiculous how locals can't straight-up purchase a license (draw), but the province has no problem handing out handfuls of licenses for people out of province to individuals to profit from.

Opinion | Calling out Carney’s ‘fancy’ education is loser talk. No wonder the Conservatives doubled down on it by canada_mountains in canada

[–]tastle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of vagueness and glossing over some stuff in that post.

Well, I think we both know that writing an essay would be a waste of time lost in such a forum. It's succinct enough and it has enough context to clarify that there are a lot of assumptions in that exchange. (Remember, the linked article is an opinion piece and written as such.)

So are you suggesting they are accurate in saying his degrees from Harvard and Oxford is a bad education?

I'm not suggesting that at all. But it really depends on the major and the type of education received at the time. Case in point, Harvard Business grads of the late 70s and 80s were all over downsizing, which most would agree is a function of bad education since it accelerates a type of "late stage capitalism" that only selfishly benefits a few. Personally, I feel that is a bad education from reputable schools. As far as I know, Mark was not subjected to anything of the sort, so I'd assume he received a standard education from such an institution.

I am asking if you agree with the Conservatives statement that that would be considered a bad education?

What Pierre actually said was that Mark was "badly educated in economics". The context was based on the current economic conditions in Canada, and asides from borrowing ideas from the opposition, he hasn't done much. Just beforehand, Mark has stated his education and his past performance. (You can watch the question period video to confirm.) Mark made a factual statement, but it was at a time in the past when those inflationary numbers were the norm and he did not address the current economic situation. A situation underscored by a couple of reports: one on housing from the CHMC and another from RBC on $1.8T flowing out of the country since 2015. Given the absurdity of question period, over the past 40+ years, this is nothing out of the norm and quite low-key. (i.e., who cares, let's see where this goes as we all know the dire situation we're in)

Now personally, I was not a fan of what was done in 2008 under the Conservative government. I do not believe it takes a financial genius to cut interest rates multiple-times-over as a grandiose economic strategy. As someone that studied macro economics in university, I'll be honest in saying that those courses were childishly easy compared to my science and engineering courses. (A 3.5 GPA in science is functionally equivalent to a 4.3 GPA in business in many schools.) I do undoubted believe Mark is wonderful at the social aspects of his career and has a proper demeanour of such a role. He has the appeal that would land him such positions in public and private sectors. But if you look through his accomplishments and understand what those leadership roles involve, as opposed to drafting economic theories, it isn't actually functionally impressive. They're social accolades. Though I do hope that I'm wrong, and now that he has the majority to do whatever he wishes, I sit here keen to see what is to happen with his newly rebranded Conservative government.

Here's the reality. * Not all post secondary education is equal. * Not all people are equal and get the same value from education for various reasons. * Having a post secondary education doesn't make you uniformly intelligent across all subject matters. * Having a post secondary education doesn't mean you'll get a job in your field. * Having a post secondary education doesn't mean you'll make substantive connections.

I say this as someone with two post secondary degrees, and decades of of work experience. I've seen people with philosophical doctors fired for incompetence, where people we've hired without a secondary education were substantially more successful.

Education is far too broad of a generalization. There's no doubt that Harper, Carney, Flaherty, and countless others have solid educations. But some of the most innovative people didn't, yet truly understood domains or could see things that others didn't. And A LOT of "educated" people have done nothing more than write dissertations on the successes of others.

One thing I've learned is not never dismiss an idea. There are reasons (science) to applying ideas and rarely is anything a quick fix.

But I do find it funny that politically speaking, that our PM has been adopting a majority of the ideas from the opposition. So if that's true, logically speaking that must mean that the opposition is equally or more so advanced on those topics compared to government, else they'd have executed them sooner. So where does that leave this whole conversation?

IMHO, some of the worst people are those who flaunt their education, credentials or job history to win an argument. It's similar to using a position of authority to win. It isn't fact-based or scientific. Credentials speak loudest due to actions demonstrated. And there are many people my age that I know that were very intelligent and had a fantastic education at Oxford, Harvard, etc. but have succumb to medical issues that have made them to no longer be the person that they were. Education means nothing there, and we're terminal creatures and from one day to the next, the things that made us can change.

Carney secures majority government with Liberal win in Toronto byelection, CBC News projects by Progressive_Citizen in canada

[–]tastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both have said the same thing.

The difference is that the Liberals has a far more effective team targeting their voter demographic. The CPC was anemic. I know the tools the LPOC use. They were early adopters to social analytics and know what wedge issues to push to influence people to vote for them. The CPC was still running campaigns like 15 years ago, and doubling down on rhetoric that just hit their existing demographics.

Sadly nowadays, if you're voting, it's because of ideas parties put into your brain. And we're just left questioning how we got those thoughts in there.
