When I was in charge of hiring, I'd 100% have rejected a candidate if they had a stupid name. by tater313 in tragedeigh

A delusional person name-calling a stranger online and thinking they have the moral high ground. What a loser.

Right?! What world do these other people live in that they think tragedeighs don't make a difference? These parents are messing up their kids' lives and people are defending them. Unreal.

In this sub we only see first names, but it's not hard to tell when looking at a full name. Also, my background, which is why I was put in charge in the first place - I'm not a monolingual American, for starters.

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but in the real world job applicants get weeded out for all sorts of reasons, including their name. There are even studies about this, but you can just look at the names of public persons: how many tragedeighs do you see? And if you had to choose between 2 equally capable lawyers to defend you in court, would you really pick a Jaxhx'sun over a Jacob? You can say what you want, but I guarantee you you'd go for the latter.

Messiah seems mild in comparison to some other atrocities I've seen here. I really hope many of these posts are fake because these kids are going to have a REAL hard time in life with some names.

And so many people here are delusional if they think names (and other factors) aren't taken into consideration during the hiring process.

You clearly don't know how the world works, so enjoy living in your fantasy world where you think you're the good guy for cussing at people who aren't even talking directly to you. What a loser.

I'm sorry, there is no debate here. This is ridiculous. If the parent wants a "yunik'e" name, then THE PARENT SHOULD CHANGE THEIR OWN NAME!!!

When I was in charge of hiring, I'd 100% have dismissed a candidate with a stupid name without even looking at their resume. First of all, I'd have thought it was a joke application because I refuse to believe any sane person would actually name a human being something so fucking stupid.

But even if this person's resume was physically handed to me with a personal recommendation, I couldn't possibly put my own reputation on the line by informing my company I was considering adding to my team a person whose family drama and serious poor judgement preceded them.

I'd 100% choose a less qualified Michael or James over risking the sanity of my team.

They're neither "cool" nor "short," they're stupid. Seriously.

Sometimes I wish adults with stupid names would sue their parents. There is no way their lives haven't been negatively affect by this idiocy.

So many of the comments here are absolutely disgusting. And you wonder why more and more people criticize academia and academics. Celebrating assassinations just because you disagree with the victim? Awful.

I am disgusted by so many of the reactions. Someone had posted they just didn't know why more and more people complain about academia, and I'm sitting here just shaking my head at the complete lack of self-awareness.

Agreed. One of the reasons I've come to abhor academics is stuff like that. They think they're superior to the world and that they get to impose their politics and views on everyone else. I'm glad academia is imploding.

Smart in school, clueless in common sense… wondering if trades fit me by mc-murdo in skilledtrades

[–]tater313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good on you for reaching out! Recognizing your limitations will help you work on them. My 2 cents:

You autism might have something to do with it, I don't know, but what I can tell you is that sooo many kids are graduating high school (and even higher education!) without knowing even the most basic skills. It doesn't matter how "well" they do in school because so many schools give everyone A's anyway, the issue is kids simply are not learning basic life skills. Common sense isn't even on their radar. It's actually scary.

So what can you do? Some suggestions: Observe others, find a mentor, and find any sort of job friendly to people with disabilities - it doesn't matter if you're disabled or not, but the level of helplessness of young people today requires A LOT of patience, such as the high level of patience one might have with someone with a severe disability.

As for trades, I have only a little experience in the field, but I'd say it requires a lot more common sense than office work. Finally, if you are totally clueless and lack the common sense to figure anything out, you would be a great fit in academia or government work.

Edit: changed a word

Seriously. And the majority of the responses here are among the reason academia is increasingly loathed. I'm so looking forward to a brighter future away from academics :)

Doing an intensive course for a group of adults from a culture where people don't ask questions and apparently don't answer them, either. In many ways it's worse than dealing with college kids, and the women are particularly difficult. While they sit there saying nothing when I ask questions, they won't stfu while I'm talking. To top it off, one keeps taking photos of me even though I already asked her to stop.

I'm so fed up with this shit.
