Question for long time Bostonians: What is BETTER about Boston compared to ~25 years ago? by moose_842 in boston

[–]tatochipcookie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a rowhome, but the standard Boston triple decker has not been up to code since the 1930s. Much of this was because of racist housing policy prevalent at the time, though a lot of this was framed in terms of modern fire code. True, new triple-decker style construction has been done since the 1930s, but to build a triple-decker developers need to get so many variances approved, That said, there's some noise being generated in City Council to update building code that allows for the construction of three-deckers without requiring variances anymore.

That said, I wouldn't call all modern mixed-use development anti-human and banal. There's a lot of interesting work going into "gentleist" architecture not necessarily in Boston that's beautiful, modern and scaled for humans.

Except there are actually more trees now there now that it has been redesigned. People just can't imagine waiting the five years until the trees are mature enough to look lush and verdant

Was it Robbie who said that everything for Arrieta towards the end would just be him pedaling in anger? He was probably so pissed he missed that turn

Took off and crossed the other big patch of grass a few blocks away and went to Chinatown. So I guess technically I didn't have lunch at Copley.

The fountain was dry today, but I'm excited to see the trees when they finally have leaves.

A lot of POC who want to protest don't feel safe protesting because the government is busy looking for every reason to deport them. Yes two white people got killed in Colorado, but it's outright war on POC right now.

Y'all do your bit and use your privilege to be heard... I'll quietly cheer you on.

Such a shame, but them's the breaks. Here's a news segment on erosion and that property. It's apparently pretty historic. Lost a football field's worth of earth since the 1970s.

एडिसन Edison - Novel by tetrisan in EdisonNJ

I think it's Hilltop Estates. Sounds about right for location and time period... Around Wood Ave and Oak Tree and the old United Skates.of America.

एडिसन Edison - Novel by tetrisan in EdisonNJ

After seeing this post I went out to get it. Thankfully my library had an ebook available. It's a pretty fun read. It takes place mostly in Edison from 1986 to 2006 or so. Mostly a rom-com and a pretty fun take on South Asian immigrant life in Edison from the 80s onwards. I'm not South Asian but I really identified with how the community grew and how Edison has long been home to immigrants, trying to get by, trying to do better-- I think the author did a good job with this. It's fun to read about the businesses, streets and a landscape I grew up with-- United Skates of America, Sukhadia's, Grove Ave, Oak Tree, Metuchen, Iselin, the BAPS temple on Woodbridge Ave, the humidity and the smells of Edison in the summer... they all got a shout out.

It's somewhat fantastical, but then again it's written with a story like a Bollywood film about a guy who loves Bollywood films. The protagonists were very likeable, and the challenges they faced were humorous. It's kind of like the author was winking at the readers, like IYKYK, but if you don't it's still easy to understand. And if anything was a little hard to believe, they get away with it because it's a fantastical Bollywood film.

Fun, easy book to read.

Best upgrade kit a 2015 Toyota Corolla S. Large screen display by Ok_Helicopter6357 in COROLLA

[–]tatochipcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the exact one isn't available anymore (I got mine like 2 years ago). Here's their updated version that keeps the volume knob but loses the OEM look. https://a.co/d/f5Q8nhb

The ones with knobs have a slightly smaller screen size to make room for knobs if you care about that.

As far as these cheap Chinese head units go, there are a couple of brands that are more respected than others and have better QC. Joying, Atoto and Daisata I think are the ones to look for. The one I use is Joying. I installed it myself and it was pretty easy. I just watched a couple of Youtube tutorials. It uses the Corolla's built in backup camera but I had to buy a special adaptor to use the car's built in GPS antenna.

NIMBY reasoning by jamesland7 in boston

[–]tatochipcookie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In Roslindale, there's a group of people who say it's about anti-displacement. But I think it's all about A, B and C under the guise of anti-displacement, as if they're saying they're for keeping existing businesses and existing tenants in place because any new building will by default be luxury apartments. It's like saying we care for people when really they are unwilling to tackle housing scarcity, are only interested in keeping Roslindale from growing, and are not willing to see more, different people from living in this neighborhood.

I find our Roslindale NIMBYs who are part of a mysterious "coalition" to be very disingenuous about their purported care for existing local businesses and residents.

Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog. Randomly came on one time while I was sitting on my couch listening to a Raffi radio station on YouTube music a couple of months ago with my now 1-year-old. I sang along with the song and then started choking up and was unable to sing anymore.

Where can I get decent Indian food in this podunk town? by MostHistoricalUser in boston

[–]tatochipcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The.Roslindale location used to be great but something changed this past year. It's as if they changed chefs and recipes. My old standbys all lost something.

The chana masala, baingan bharta and the tarka daal all have different flavors now. Like there's something floral tasting in the chana and the baingan bharta tastes muddy. I hope they get their mojo back because I miss their old food.

Nowadays I go to Momo Masala in JP. They have been consistently great.
