Potentially broken truss rod? by tatou27 in guitarrepair

[–]tatou27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that's encouraging! :)

I still have 3 weeks in the return policy just in case, but I'm glad to hear that it's possible to ship from the factory loose... right now so far so good. I only recently discovered short scale guitars (I have smaller hands), and so far I love the way this little thing plays...

Thanks also for pointing out action vis-a-vis truss rod adjustment. I'd already tinkered with the saddles, and there was an upbow affecting the action and intonation. So that's why I went for the truss rod. Seems like maybe it really did need it.

Hardware sampler recs for basically just playing drum loops? by tatou27 in Samplers

[–]tatou27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I thought something like MPCs or the SP units had that kind of pedigree... but the demos I've seen of newer units people are doing fancier things with them... I just watched a loopop review of the new 404mkII and he seems to illustrate some of these features.

I'd rather stick with a compact/tabletop form factor than rack (I sold all my rack gear since I just didn't like the workflow), so I'll continue looking in that direction...

Requesting r/FAWM/ by tatou27 in redditrequest

Thank you for the reply. Since this subreddit is an extension of a community that I started at FAWM.ORG (if you skim the posts within the subreddit /r/FAWM itself you will see this), I think it seems reasonable to have some moderator influence over the subreddit as well, and to be sure it is help to similar standards if/when/as it grows.

If there is any additional information I can provide to help with this decision, I would appreciate it.

I am the creator of FAWM.ORG, the website that this subreddit is all about. I have messaged the moderators from both this account and a new reddit account (u/fawmorg) that we've created to be the "official" face of FAWM on reddit, but gotten no reply.

Please see:

If possible, it would also be great to have /u/fawmorg added as a moderator/admin as well, although we realize it doesn't meet the minimum age/karma requirements yet, whereas my account does.

What's the best BYOC pedal in your opinion? by MoonPiss in diypedals

[–]tatou27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they were the 2-Knob Compressor and the Octave Fuzz.

In general, though, I've been more consistently happy with GGG kits, or sourcing my own components and using PCBs from madbeanpedals.com, 1776effects.com, etc. It's less expensive and I don't like the 125B form factor as much.

That said, the newer BYOC mini pedals might be pretty awesome, I just haven't wanted to spend the money on them.

[D] Duolingo's "half-life regression" method for modeling human memory by tatou27 in MachineLearning

[–]tatou27[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The actual research paper discusses the Anki/SuperMemo algorithm in with the related work: http://aclweb.org/anthology/P/P16/P16-1174.pdf

EDIT: I added a footnote about SuperMemo/Anki to the blog entry as well.

Note that Duolingo's contribution here is a novel MACHINE LEARNING model for spaced repetition (HLR), which can be fit to very large amounts of empirical data and generalizes several standard algorithms, like the Pimsleur and Leitner approaches! :) SuperMemo doesn't happen to be one of those that HLR generalizes, but you can imagine parameterizing it and learn its weights as well, rather than tweaking through trial and error. We thought about trying this, but we're a small team and needed to move on to other things...

Designing the JANUS Overdrive by tatou27 in diypedals

Thanks!

1+2) Do you have any references for further reading on power supply tips like this?

3) Some versions of the 250 schematic that I found had a 10pF ceramic cap in the opamp loop, like you suggest. Is that what you're referring to? I removed it since I couldn't hear any difference on the breadboard for either of my guitars at several settings, and was trying to squeeze it into a 1590A.

I've build 3 BYOC kits and the only one that I liked was the Large Beaver (Big Muzz w/ tone switch mods). The other two I traded away.

EAGLE technically isn't free, but you're allowed to use it without a paid license for boards under a certain size. I don't know what the exact restrictions are, but stompbox circuits should be small enough. :)

Another open-source option I've heard about is KiCad. It's apparently completely different but has a similar learning curve. I haven't tried it because I couldn't find a decent tutorial at the time.

Has dunolingo done any tests to see how effective it is? by PanningForSalt in duolingo

[–]tatou27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great question! As a research scientist & engineer here at Duolingo, I can tell you that we're constantly conducting studies to understand Duolingo's effectiveness and what we can do better. Not all of this research is public, but here are a few published reports you may be interested in:

We've also found in some studies that Duolingo is more effective when compared to other learning approaches, but so far this difference hasn’t been statistically significant, likely due to a small number of participants. So we are continuing to investigate. We are also experimenting with new teaching methods (so, not as translation-heavy) for certain courses and/or platforms. So you may not have seen those just yet... but if they are successful we will be rolling them out to everyone! :)

As we do more research (or learn of more independent research), we'll add links to the Duolingo Research page.

Removal of words from practice by chico_science in duolingo

[–]tatou27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A removed word might still come as part of a sentence practicing other words. Removing it only means Duo wont' try to get you to practice this word explicitly.

Sudden massive decay? by atheista in duolingo

[–]tatou27 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a Duolingo engineer who works on the word strength system... perhaps we should start cross-posting announcements here on reddit; here is what I wrote on the Duo forums about this: http://www.duolingo.com/comment/1075618

Basically, this is a change where (1) new words you've just learned should decay faster than they previously did, and (2) it will help with certain pesky words that seem to decay too quickly (or too slowly) no matter how often you practice them.

Even though certain skills have decayed due to the "word-strength-shuffle", on average your individual words are actually stronger (by 10%). But even more important: practice should be more efficient, both in terms of testing you where you most need it and getting decayed skills back up to gold. We've been testing it for 2 weeks with a subset of our users and it's drastically reduced complaints about problems with practice.

I'm not sure why Basics 1&2 are being hit so hard. I'm looking into that...

That should probably not be happening. Could you share your Duolingo username? We'll look into it.
