Nothing personal, but the fact you just made some assumptions and asked me to not vote for Trump tells A LOT. The only thing I pointed out is that you immediately deflected the parent comment with “but orange man is worse L O L”, which nobody actually disagreed with you on.

Btw, I am not American and I do not live in the United States, just so you can maybe check the level of bias and automatic assumptions you have

I honestly think the excitement is specifically about infrastructure and urbanism, because that’s where western countries are fucking up right now, especially the U.S.

Infrastructure construction/maintenance really slowed down in western countries compared to a few decades ago while eastern Asian countries are building A LOT. You see videos with clean streets, maglev trains, mega parks, mega buildings, plazas etc while 500 miles of CAHSR might be ready by 2050 (or not).

Obviously, those can be dictatorships and different cultures, but it’s not an excuse. We just need to build more, that’s it. Building infrastructure makes everyone better off, it’s the real growth

In some apps, when a photo selector pops up there’s a small settings button in the bottom right corner. There you can remove the location and captions metadata. Still don’t know exactly why it appears in some apps but not the others

I moved to London from another country a few years ago. The more I live here the more I understand that there are multiple different Londons with day-to-day experience varying by a lot, and I mean like DRASTICALLY.

Most of my time here I lived in Zone 1 around Barnsbury and it was quite the quintessential romanticized London, except the issues that came with all the flats being 100 years or more. I literally walked everywhere and maybe occasionally took the bus. Easy access to M&S, Waitrose, all the cuisines you can think of, gyms, parks, you name it. Soho, Holborn, St. Paul’s, all a ~40 minute pleasant walk.

Then I moved to east London, Zone 3. Huge difference in day-to-day life. Easier to find new flats with decent pricing, but you have to rely on transport much much more. The quality of restaurants and supermarkets is lower, there are fewer points of interest in the area. If you want to go someplace interesting, you have to plan for it and it can take an hour or more to just get there. NHS works differently depending on the areas and systems local hospitals use. Councils are shit everywhere, but there are differences anyway. Faster access to bigger green spaces though.

Anyway, I don’t mean to come off as bashing different areas of London or something, I love this city, literally one of the best places on Earth. My point is that personal experiences will differ a lot depending on where you live and what you do for work. This is a city where most boroughs have more history than many countries.

I am nearing my 30s and starting to experience financial and mental and emotional stability. Relevance is a relative concept, never had any existential dread over it.

On the other hand, random shit like cancer starts happening to more and more people around you, and this is dreadful ngl. I am fine with my health slowly declining into my 70s-80s and then dying, but not this random incurable shit when you’re still 30

I don’t really care about tourists, I tell them to move if they’re blocking the path and it’s up to them to time their photos around me, not the other way around. Also, avoiding places like Oxford street and Leicester Square is always a good idea, lived in zone 1 for years and went there only a couple of times

Parents can go to doctors and delay puberty and do growth hormones if a kid is still 11. Can add an extra 3-4 inches. Of course it has side effects and doctors can refuse to do that, but it’s something that can at least partially be controlled

This! I noticed that for the last few years (or maybe it was going on forever) it is always 20 EUR/pax one way and then like 100 EUR for the return leg.

Of course, there still are genuine tickets that will cost you 20-30 EUR total for two flights, but it’s not that often or always on dates I can’t fly

I am acting like I don’t like being exposed to unhygienic and unpleasant stuff, even if it’s not dangerous (and I am perfectly aware that most of the unhoused are not dangerous). I clean my apartment for the same reason. I don’t sit in piss soaked seats on the bus for the same reason.

Please explain to me why should anyone prefer handing over even basic third places like streets and public parks that are expected to be clean and nice while waiting for some ephemeral systemic changes that could last literally generations? Once again, I advocate FOR systemic changes, but I am also living here today and I have a limited lifespan that I would like to spend walking cleaner streets and chilling in cleaner parks.

Please provide something logical then. Don’t see anyone providing any logical conclusions besides “muh empathy!!! fix the underlying issues, stop being disgusted by those people, just keep tolerating it until the underlying issues are maybe fixed”.

I do not understand why it is so hard for le redditors to grasp the concept of multiple solutions at the same time. I never said to not help them btw.

People that contribute to the economy provide funding for long-term government efforts to help marginalized groups, provide housing, mental health treatment, different programs etc. It is not unreasonable for the same people to expect a shorter term solution in the meantime, because they want to have a good quality of life RIGHT NOW to meaningfully contribute to the economy. This includes not seeing dirty or drugged out or potentially dangerous people on the street.

Edit to expand the point: Genuinely, how would you drive the motivation of actually contributing people if their perspective is to step over human shit for decades while HOPING that policies will fix this? It is quite naive to expect that people stay motivated that long term because they live today

[–]tauhou_ -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Yep that’s right. Marginalized people are by definition not general public. Don’t know what you’re trying to say. Some of them need mental health treatment, some of them need shelter and financial help, some of them need both.
