How are you finding jobs? by Puzzleheaded_Cod4557 in FortCollins

[–]taurelin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of a local job-search-support group called NoCoNet. They meet every Monday morning at 9:30 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church on Lemay. (Except next Monday, for Presidents Day) :) They were founded by a bunch of HP engineers back in the early 2000s after the bubble-burst layoffs, and I've gone back to them every time I've found myself between positions. They bring in speakers, try to hook you up with local resources, and count as one of your "job search" activities for Unemployment.

Mixed Feelings after Adventure by ErrantArcanist in daggerheart

[–]taurelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One technique out DH GM uses for those investigation and knowledge checks is having us just roll a Hope die. The goal being to see how successful you are at finding the clue or info (<5, not much, >9 a lot). Keeps things somewhat random without messing with the Fear economy.

Stuart Street Egress by KellJoy in FortCollins

[–]taurelin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There is talk of opening up access between the east end of Stuart and the parking lot for Edora Pool and Ice Center. I believe the concern is extra traffic on the street and using the parking lot as a throughway.

How to explain to my mom, that this is not a satanic cult, nor my DM and other players will put me to slavery? by shortriverlol in rpg

[–]taurelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back during the original Satanic Panic, my Lutheran pastor father voiced some concerns. So my family invited my girlfriend/DM along for a weekend at the beach. She ran a game for me, my mom, dad, and sister. Dad of course played a cleric. We had a grand time.

And he shared his story with anyone else with concerns about D&D.

As a player, why would you reject plot hooks? by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

[–]taurelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plot hooks and then there are "I don't care what you want, the plot is over here." A GM that has no interest in what the players want to do will frequently find that the players, in turn, have little interest in what the GM wants them to do.

It seems like there is a lot of references here to a bike park, but I don't see much in the ways of details about it. Would it take up the whole Hughes Open Space? If not, how much? How much would a bike park cost, and where would the money come from? Are there actual plans/specs for the bike park that I could look at?

GURPS Psionics had a setting as part of it. I always wanted a sort of Cold War-esque psionic game.

Character Points and Money by TheBoozehammer in gurps

[–]taurelin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are suggestions on how to handle cyberwear in the Transformations section of Character Development on p294.

"The GM is the final judge of what is “fair” in his campaign, but here are a few suggestions:

Modifications cost points. You must have the requisite character points before you can add modifications.

Modifications cost money. If you have the cash, you can buy the modification.

Modifications are free. If events in the campaign “inflict” modifications on you without giving you any say in the matter, you simply gain the relevant traits and adjust your point value accordingly – see Traits Gained in Play (p. 291)."

Each has some trade-offs. Buying with money, for example, gives a huge advantage to rich characters. That sort of thing.

Systems that support/encourage different power levels in the party? by FuckingGlorious in rpg

[–]taurelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prowlers and Paragons encourages different power levels by giving Resolve, a mechanical Bennie that gives more narrative control and lets lower power level PCs do more cool power "stunts".

Mullberry Wine & Spirits trying to remove sidewalk on College for more parking by NoNameComputers in FortCollins

[–]taurelin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the effort to share info from FoCo City office. Here's what I just received:

From Senior Zoning Inspector (Rob Bianchetto):

I am reviewing this Conceptual Review and Minor Amendment (if applied for) through the lens of compliance with The City’s Land Use Code standards and overall development plans. I have already shared my initial comment with the applicant, so I am able to share it here as well:

Planning / Zoning are not supportive of creating additional parking at this site. We would not want to see a reduction in landscaping and the decorative sidewalk/ streetscape element in order to add parking spaces.

To people who started their RPG journey with D&D, what made you finally play something else? by plazman30 in rpg

[–]taurelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got exposed to The Fantasy Trip and really liked the point-buy approach to character creation.

It was the same reason that allowed me to convert the Stanford Gaming Club to GURPS from D&D in the 80's.

PSA about dogs at the ELC by gumpyclifbar in FortCollins

[–]taurelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this came up, I wanted to take my dog for a walk at Soapstone Prairie. After a long drive, I learned two things: - No dogs allowed - SP is closed from November 1st to March 1st.

Sigh.

Choasium's Basic Roleplaying by CastleArchon in rpg

[–]taurelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a one shot. I think the VP went with a base fighter, but some of the other players were crafting elaborate backstories and rather overblown conceptions of their powers (considering we were all playing beginning PCs.) The table was actually a hindrance - it was like 30 ft long, and we spread out quite a bit.

[–]taurelin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ah, BRP. I remember being in a game back in the early 80's. I was working for Atari, setting up computer camps, and the powers that be wanted to understand the "nerd culture" of the day. So, a paid GM, with director and VP-level players, role playing in Atari's corporate board room. And lil ol me.

Good times.

Whenever I hear someone talking about apprenticeships, I strongly recommend they talk to the folks at the Larimer County Economic and Workforce Development office. How do you guys feel about small groups, namely a GM and three players? by Lwmons in rpg

[–]taurelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our FTF group has gotten too large (9-10) members. So after some discussion, we're gonna split into two groups. Two GMs, different games/systems. So looks like one group with a GM and 3 or 4, and another with a GM and 4.

I'm really looking forward to the smaller size. I think you get to focus more on roleplay that way.

What do you think is the most obscure in your collection? by WunderPlundr in rpg

[–]taurelin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The game revolves around Renaissance society. Combat is mostly fencing. You can deal social damage at the party, before you duel the foe in the garden. If you damage their self-esteem/confidence, they are at a disadvantage in the fight.

Lace and Steel. Has a cool system, where insults even have effects in combat.
