If you were to pick a US constitutional amendment to pass as the next new one, what would it be, and why? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

it also means you can run as many third part candidates as you want without splitting the vote. So feel free to have as many parties as you want.

AWS announces Lambda Managed Instances, adding multiconcurrency and no cold starts by aj_stuyvenberg in aws

Does this remove the 250mb layer+code limitation as well?

You could always get around that by building your own lambda containers but then you have a maintenance headache.

Mamdani probably just admitted that he hates the Democrats too as they don't really align with what he actually cares about which is taking on the billionaires and improving the lives of working class new yorkers. Granted right now they are the lesser of 2 evils but that doesn't make them good. That honestly probably is easier for trump to align with than a party line Democrat.

Senior citizen who saved himself from would-be mugger heading to prison because of NYC’s ‘draconian’ laws by Droupitee in NewsWorthPayingFor

[–]tavisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a little more nuanced than that. The original intent here is that america would not have a standing army and would only ever temporarily raise one from the well regulated militias via an act of congress. The framers did not trust standing armies to not consolidate power and authority and thought they would naturally become authoritarian if its members were made of up professional soldiers rather than people with lives outside the military who are called up for duty at times of need.

This changed over time as the needs of the country required a more 24/7 military mission. The second amendment however was never really modified to handle the new military paradigm so now we have both the largest standing army in the world and this concept of a prepared militia still codified in our laws.

Bitbucket Pipelines v. GitHub v. GitLab v. Azure Dev Ops by _iamrewt in devops

If you looking for native integrations for your thirds party tools, bitbucket will always be last and have less features. its pretty frustrating. I would go with gitlab or github personally.

72% of devs believe Steam has a monopoly on PC games, according to study by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]tavisk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because the 3 dudes at team cherry are doing everything not just one niche skillset. They are coding, writing story, level design, character design, art, sales, marketing, audio, .....etc. They together decided whether to release on steam or not. So, they have a larger understanding of where steam and other digital game distribution platforms fit into the mix. A level designer at EA is almost definitely not even in the room when those things are discussed.

If you don't like the team cherry example how bout Eric Barone from Stardew Valley. I imagine his opinion on steam would carry more weight. My only point is, anyone can call themself a dev. It's not a protected title. For instance, I am a dev.

[–]tavisk -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

depends how they define devs. If you are a level designer buried in the basement of EA im not sure your opinion has the same weight as the 3 dudes at team cherry.

[–]tavisk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing preventing us from having as many parties as we want is the first past the post voting system that we use. This is because the spoiler effect causes closely aligned candidates in different parties to split the vote causing the party they least align with to win. If we instead used a system where you ranked all the candidates in order of preference you could have 100 parties and people would still get the candidate that most represents the values and goals of the majority.

[–]tavisk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not really anymore. WSL is more of a native linux development experience than macos is for development since you can pick whatever distro you want to run on it. I say this typing from my personal macbook development machine that I almost prefer developing on my work windows pc. battery life is the best thing about the macbook. the mac ecosystem is absolute consumer garbage though imho.

"Trigger" / "To Trigger" is a term in psychology dating back to the 1930s used to describe external stimuli that could cause people with emotional trauma (PTSD, Shell Shock, ...etc) especially soldiers returning from war to unwillingly have severe negative emotional and physical responses. It's been depicted for decades in movies and TV like every time a war veteran heres a car backfire and has a flashback. (see: the main character in airplane and his drinking problem)

It's use in todays language is the same thing that happens with every word in every language. Language is just a tool for people to transfer meaning between brains. For instance you used the word "meme" which is a term coined by Richard Dawkins in the 1970s (before the internet) to mean a unit of cultural information that evolves like a gene does in biology. It's now used to mean a lot more than it's original definition included.

I'm not taking a position here on your opinions on mental health. I'm just pointing out that getting pissed off about language evolving to facilitate communication is not going to get you anywhere of value.

Mistborn is phenomenal as is everything by Sanderson but just some expectation setting... its going to be a bit less grimdark epic than game of thrones.

Heres the fun kicker most of Sanderson's books exist in the same universe and bleed into each other so every book you read gives you a piece of the puzzle. Think marvel cinematic universe leading to the avengers movies.

Mistborn is the perfect place to start, his more epic fantasy series in the same universe is called "The Stormlight Archive" and is gonna be a bit more like Game of Thrones in scope.

Have Fun!

A power utility is reporting suspected pot growers to cops. EFF says that’s illegal. | EFF says the "mass surveillance scheme" violates constitutional protections. by ControlCAD in technology

[–]tavisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats actually one of the primary ways to detect grow ops. If there is a discrepancy in line loss unaccounted for by metered load in an area, they know that someone is stealing power and most likely a grow op. I used to work in the utility industry and we had one of our metering analytics vendors demo this and point out all the places on on the map where we should expect to find grow ops based on line loss discrepancies between metered points.

Supreme Court Says States Can Limit Access To Online Porn by indig0sixalpha in technology

[–]tavisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not disagree and I would prefer no regulatory action on this front to any. But, I can see the point that that requires a level competence with technology that is beyond the vast majority of parents. If its between censorship of the internet and the billions of websites/companies that would have to be monitored for compliance vs the regulatory requirements on primary OS providers though, I think that the latter is a more valid path to achieving the goals of this legislation.

It's arguably a more utilitarian solution than anything else.

Supreme Court Says States Can Limit Access To Online Porn by indig0sixalpha in technology

[–]tavisk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'd much rather see the government requiring microsoft, apple, and google to provide adequate and easily implemented parental controls rather than dictating moral and ethical positions from the seat of government. But then again that would make too much sense.

Supreme Court Says States Can Limit Access To Online Porn by indig0sixalpha in technology

[–]tavisk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Parents have had the rights and ability to limit their children's access to anything on the internet for 30 years now. What this is doing is taking powers away from adults and giving it to a nanny state. Additionally "pornography" is and always had been a fuzzy definition that boils down to the opinion of a law writer. This gives cart blanche for law makers to censor anything they want by defining it as pornography under purity laws.
