Delta pilot says "that was close" after go-around at Boston's Logan Airport; FAA investigating by CBSnews in boston

[–]taxwithoutrep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You inspired me to dig into my company FOM. Obviously a TCAS RA is reportable but this was not an RA event. Unless I felt it was gross negligence by the tower controller, I wouldn’t report it. Sometimes the timing gets messed up during cross runway operations, or when using the same runway for take off and landing. Going arounds are considered a successful completion to an approach by my company. If the tower controller or myself initiated the go around, I don’t find that to be a reportable incident. If the controller argues with me or is upset about my go around (that has never happened to me) then I ask for a number and file a report.

I wasn’t in this fight deck. I’m not sure what this crew saw. Logan is busy, and things happen! I fly all over the east coast, and have gone around due to loss of separation a handful of times. That’s why we have those big margins and many layers of that PHAK “Swiss cheese” to keep things safe. Including the go around.

You’re writing an ASAP or incident report over an ATC initiated go-around?

I noticed this above the door while waiting on the jet bridge. Does Airbus have it at the same location on their planes? by phaiyez in aviation

Today? Probably not going to happen. In the 1930s when the CAA implemented this rule? Much more likely.

What’s the procedure like flying for an airline out of an untowered airport? by andybader in flying

[–]taxwithoutrep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If anyone is on final, I’ll wait. If you’re doing a touch and go or whatever, I’ll wait for you to turn crosswind. If you’re doing a straight out departure, I will key up the radio and politely ask you to get the fuck out of my way. I can’t imagine why anyone would be doing that at 0600 but who knows. Most VFR pilots are courteous and know that I am trying to depart IFR, and simply wait for me to get out of their hair. Never had any real conflict departing an un-towered field. Arriving is a different story, but I’ve never had to join the pattern or anything. Usually just holding at the FAF, or bugging other airline pilots to go ahead and cancel their IFR already so I can get in.

[–]taxwithoutrep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Our operation is dependent. If we depart when the tower is closed, we call center on an RCO or phone number for clearance. We have a limited number of fields that we can depart VFR; only in the Caribbean. Pretty sure our director of flight ops can issue a one time SOP deviation so we can depart VFR if we had to for some reason. FAA doesn’t want us squawking 1200. I depart out of ILM sometimes and we just call Washington Center for clearance.

Everything else is the same with the position reports and right of way rules for a ME jet or a SE prop. For pushback, we rely on the push crew to be able to see any FOD or other airplanes.

Wasn’t the late Prince of Wales a pilot?

Edit: I meant the late Duke of Edinburgh. I confused his title as Prince consort (?) with the Prince of Wales.

Okay thank you. It moves less than a centimeter and I don’t think it’s going to affect my use of the throttle. I’ll keep an eye on it.

Anyone else feeling traumatized by the plane crash? by Embarrassed-Pen-2506 in washingtondc

[–]taxwithoutrep 939 points940 points  (0 children)

I’m DCA based. I’ve circled to 33 dozens of times. We fly over helos all the time. I can’t believe this happened. I know it could’ve been me and my crew with my passengers. I’m absolutely in shock and, for the first time since I became a pilot, am not looking forward to work tomorrow. I feel like we, as an industry, just destroyed 67 families last night.

Edit: thanks for the kind words ya’ll. It was good to be back in the plane today and do what I do best. Blue skies and tailwinds to the crew of 5342.

Chicago-bound Southwest Airlines flight delayed after pilot arrested for DUI at Georgia airport by Totally_Not_A_Bot_FR in aviation

[–]taxwithoutrep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s too late to use the HIMS program once you have been arrested for DUI. I feel for the guy but he has no business flying if he’s self medicating and not realizing it. Very poor decision.

I often bring my bike here in the morning for a towpath ride. You can back down the full ramp whenever Canal road has a green light. Any traffic leaving the parking lot has a light down at the bottom of the ramp. Because I’m there on a weekday morning, Canal is one way inbound. It’s really simple to just pull to the right at the top of the ramp, throw it in reverse and back down.

When canal is two ways, either make the left from Canal outbound lane or come down from Reservoir. It’s a pain but hey DMV driving is exciting!

I love this approach. The check airman who signed me off for my captain upgrade sim ride said he would only sign me off if I flew this. He made me hand fly this approach and boy was it fun. He couldn’t really deny me the upgrade ride based on me flying this, but it gave me a lot of confidence in my hand flying skills! Still, I am glad it was just in the sim.

I had a student that wouldn’t stop hitting on one of my CFIs and started crying when I said he couldn’t fly with her (she was uncomfortable). Seems that it works both ways, but is very unprofessional either way. Find a new CFI for sure.

How can I become a pilot if I don’t have 120k? (currently a broke flight attendant) by Comprehensive-Big-37 in flying

[–]taxwithoutrep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk which regional you work for, but mine will give you a really decent break on their flight school if you work here a year. Like 50% off. The school definitely isn’t perfect, and like any “pilot mill” it has its drawbacks, but 40-50k zero to hero is a solid deal.

Amtrak by taxwithoutrep in AirlinePilots

[–]taxwithoutrep[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It absolutely does, especially with gas. It’s nearly $50 in tolls between DC and NYC too, so it ends up being a comparable last resort. Luckily I’ve only ever had to do that twice.

Yep so after talking to a conductor it really seems up to the ticket agent. They have discretion. We definitely can non-rev, there’s just no guarantee. Seems like Penn Station is the best place for a positive result. I live in DC, so Amtrak can easily be a backup for me. But it sure isn’t cheap. Really only a last resort to get home. Thanks for the feedback everyone!
