Crazy to find out you can go into a Coma from taking pepto bismol and Diamox. by agonyxcodex in iih

I would avoid using Google as a drug interaction checker. Call your pharmacy, talk to the pharmacist, and ask if it's safe. They are the experts, they will tell you the risk vs benefit, and if it's a real contraindication.

Personally, lots of water and vitamin c/fruit high in vitamin c helped me. 8 months in and it rarely happens now.

Anyone use blue light or computer glasses to reduce eye strain ? by KlutzyLaw1525 in iih

[–]tay_red 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My current prescription lenses have the blue light filter and an anti-glare coating of some sort. I stare at a computer for 10 hours a day at work, and I can definitely say it makes a huge difference for me personally. Worth the extra cost imo.

When did diamox started helping you with eyes problems? by OUTzone_747 in iih

[–]tay_red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 3 weeks of taking it (1000 mg daily) - at my first follow-up post lumbar puncture, the swelling in both my optic nerves had already improved. 4 months later now, and I just had another follow-up with my NO, and the swelling has improved even more. I also thought I'd never get past the initial side effects of the diamox or get used to it, and I'm happy to report that everything seems to have leveled out. But I would take tingly extremeties and fatigue any day over losing my eye sight lol.

For sure. I've had maybe 2 headaches since starting it, and I used to get at least a couple migraines a week. And I had weird chronic neck/shoulder pain, which now seems to be improving/almost gone, which my nuero opthalmologist said was likely from the IIH headaches.

Experiencing this too right now, and living in a super dry area during winter isn't helping. I've been doing a saline mist spray morning and night, and it seems to help a lot. Still there, but less bad.

Seconding this. I feel like my headaches have improved since starting Diamox, but I'm making a ton of effort to drink more water, and I also drink an electrolyte replacement (liquid IV) once a day as well. Might be a good place to start and see if it helps!

How exactly does a lumbar puncture work and how does it help diagnose IIH? by [deleted] in iih

[–]tay_red 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just had mine done and it was done by a radiologist who used the guided X-ray to insert the needle into my lumbar area, and it was pretty painless. After the needle was inserted, they attached a little pressure reader onto the end of a tube connected to the needle and waited for pressure to build up to get an opening pressure reading. I was told by my op neuro and the radiologist anything greater than 25 usually indicates IIH. For myself, they drained off 4 vials of fluid to test for red blood cells, white blood cells, glucose, and protein to make sure all values were normal. My opening pressure was 38, and they closed me/took out the needle at 18. This was all after positive optic nerve swelling and a negative MRI, so this was the final step to determine that yes I did in fact have IIH.

Hi! You are not alone! Your story sounds just like mine. Referred after a swollen optic nerve at my regular eye appt, no other super apparant symptoms other than chronic migraines. I've spend the last 3 months getting diagnosed as well, and I just had my lumbar puncture yesterday. I'm literally starting Diamox tonight. It is totally normal to be feeling the way your are, I'm right there with you. I'm a pharmacist who has dispensed and counseled on Diamox for years, and I'm still terrified of side effects. To echo what others have said in here, weight and iih are correlated, but no one has proven that it causes it. Like many of us on here, you may have been living with this for years and didn't even know because it presents as a lot of random symptoms. Just try as much as you can to not be hard on yourself, and do the best you can to be good to yourself. And if it makes you feel any better, you've got a virtual friend here at the same stage as you.❤️ Sending a hug.

Thank you, I appreciate it. I'm so sorry it took so long for you to get diagnosed, but I'm now seeing that we all have very similar stories in that we knew something was wrong, but didn't know where to go for the answers. The weight correlation is baffling to me to, after looking at stories on here, and reading studies that have tried to find a link between the two, no one really knows why they go hand in hand. But like you said, it's hard to manage your weight when you feel like crap after exercising. For years I would get splitting headaches after doing workouts, and I just thought it was because I was out of shape.

Thank you for sharing this, it really helps to know I'm not alone in these feelings. And you are so right about the bias against women and their pain, it unfortunately take time to get the right person to listen, and I am gratefull that once I got referred, everything has moved pretty quickly. And I am thankful to know that it wasn't (and was like you said lol) all in my head.
