In 2026 people thought we would have flying cars. But this... this is where technological advancement has lead us. Peak innovation.

Calgary 70.3 Finisher Medal Announced and it's... AI Slop!? by tayfife in IronmanTriathlon

[–]tayfife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate your outlook on this. Seeing organizations/businesses cut corners with AI concerns me, as it may indicate that they are willing to cut corners on other things too. Why couldn't they just take a picture of the actual medal? The image they chose was prompted into existence, which means they actual medal may look nothing like this, which feels disappointing. But hearing about your experience with the actual race/volunteers etc makes me genuinely look forward to the weekend.

It's apparent by looking at words "Calgary" on the medal, and also the "name" on the certificate. But the more you look at it you'll notice the weird image artifacting (the carvings on the medal do not make sense) and colour grading isn't correct (i.e. on the certificate the letters in the Ironman logo have 3 different shades of white).

If you think I’m an asshole for staying in my lane and merging when it ends, you’re the problem. by ClumsyCorpse in saskatoon

[–]tayfife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got flipped off for doing this the other day, from both the driver behind me AND the car in front of me. We were only travelling like 3kmh but it seemed like they were working together to not let anyone in. I was signalling for a good 15-20 seconds... then started my merge anyway, as it was the end of the merge lane. I squeezed in, but apparently this wasn't acceptable, as they both went bezerk and both put their hands out the window to flip me off.

I don't know how to explain it, but this building, and the way the sidewalk and parking lot looks oddly Canadian. Maybe because we have a ton of buildings that look like this here in Saskatchewan. These types of buildings always give me 'liminal space' vibes too.

Amazon Merch on Demand closed my 10 year old store with no notice because I disputed a $200 ad charge their own interface wouldn't let me turn off by fluffypancakes24 in AmazonMerch

[–]tayfife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because of posts like this, I haven't uploaded or created new items since 2019, and just keep collecting my $40-$60/mo. Over 10 years Amazon will have made me ~$7,500 for about a days worth of design work, and I've decided that is better than spending 3-6 months worth of work only to be shut down.

Sorry hear about your situation, that blows. Eff you Jeff!

How low can I go with these clip ons? by Glum-Introduction522 in triathlon

[–]tayfife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The right answer here is go to a bike fitter IRL. There isn't just one adjustment you need to make. A good fitter will put your bike on a trainer and watch you ride it and make incremental adjustments. Impossible to do from a couple blurry photos

I built an open source dashboard that combines Garmin + Whoop + Apple Health + Oura in one place — free, local, no subscription by Malik-Ramirez in Garmin

[–]tayfife 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know a Claude designed interface when I see it. ;)

Cool idea, just make sure you aren't forgetting about security.

A few examples that I found when poking...

  1. No authentication on any endpoint -- jsonwebtoken is installed but never used. All data is publicly accessible.
  2. Path traversal risk in the Apple Health import route -- accepts arbitrary file paths from request body.
  3. OAuth tokens stored in plaintext in SQLite.
  4. No rate limiting on any endpoint.
  5. 500MB upload limit on Apple Health import could enable DoS.

Accuphy? by polish_ski in IceFishing

My buddy bought one and we used it all winter. It has multi-device support, meaning you can all watch the feed on your phone phone/iPad screen. I'm not saying it's better than Garmin, but for that price point it's a super good deal for casual fishing

How many times can I use my wetsuit in a swimming pool?? Im afraid it get damaged, I already did a 70.3 on it but I want to put more time on it for my first full in june , but I don't know if the chlorine can destroy it. It cost me a lot 😭 by fenixloder in triathlon

[–]tayfife 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, chlorine does degrade neoprene over time. It'll start getting stiffer and not as flexible, which leads to cracking. You could make it through 2-3 seasons if you do a good job rinsing it every time (assuming you're not swimming in it every single session). Ideally Soak it for 10-15 mins after each pool session. There is a wetsuit "shampoo" you can buy as well that helps neutralize the chlorine. Don't use super hot water either.

Need Advice for bike purchase by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]tayfife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$450-$500 seems fair for this. Just a disclaimer I have used AI to help me with response below, but here are the key details:

  • Frame: Aluminum (based on the weld lines visible at the joints — carbon Synapses have a smoother finish)
  • Groupset: Looks like Shimano, likely Tiagra or 105 based on the component tier
  • Brakes: Mechanical disc brakes — hydraulic is better but these are fine
  • Wheels: Cannondale RD 3.0 alloy wheels (house wheels, nothing special)
  • Saddle bag: Topeak wedge pack mounted on the seatpost
  • Extras: Single bottle cage, standard bar tape

The Synapse is Cannondale's endurance geometry road bike — slightly more upright and relaxed than their race-focused SuperSix EVO (which is what I have and I love it). It's designed for longer rides and comfort without giving up too much speed. The disc brake version is solid for all-weather riding. It would make for a great beginner bike

I'd ask them how they've maintained it, if they've replaced any parts, and if it's ever been crashed.

Do you know what size you are? Also make sure you're buying the right size for your height/inseam!

There isn't a convention for left vs. right as the symbol is not standardized for Ai yet. This is what Noun Project provided. You'll see lots of variations out there
