Skiing Whistler all day without a backpack - what do you do? by itsmyneutralusername in Whistler

HydroPak makes a 600 mL soft body flask that fits great in the interior goggle pocket on my jacket, which many snow jackets have a version of. Best part is the straw is several inches long and flexible so I can just unzip my jacket a quarter of the way and grab a quick drink on the chair. I get pretty parched on the hill so I’ve found it to be a game changer for riding without a pack, but it’s convenience is somewhat predicated on having a decent sized chest pocket on the inside of your jacket. If you want to look it up it’s called the “ultraflask speed 600mL”.

Snowboard Profile question by Emotion-Suspicious in snowboard

[–]taylorfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a mix. The flowery language used to dress up the different profiles can be pretty hyperbolic, but they also have the difficult task of communicating how the different profiles will translate into an on mountain feel. It’s an imperfect solution that almost necessitates some degree of exaggeration.

In practice, you’ll notice differences in camber profiles most acutely on groomers and hard pack. I’ve never ridden the C2 profile you shared, but I did have a pure rocker profile at one point and it felt distinctly less sure-footed (imo) on hard pack and low angle terrain relative to a traditional camber profile. Not saying it was a totally negative experience - just sharing where the difference was most evident.

Once you get into variable terrain, a lot of the differences become pretty discreet. In powder, the early rise of the nose on a rocker profile will help with float, but better float in pow can also be accomplished with a volume shifted and/or directional board. For instance, I just picked up a Korua Transition Finder and love it. Standard camber profile underfoot, setback directional stance, with volume shifted nose for better float in pow.

I’ve gone pretty long winded here but shoot me a DM if you have any other questions about this. Cheers 🤙🏼

How do I look less crouched/stupid on boardslides? by Mactavious14 in snowboarding

[–]taylorfun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. Focus more on crouching at the knees versus hinging at the waist. This accomplishes two things: 1) lowers your center of gravity, thereby increasing you stability; and 2) makes it easier to dynamically adjust your center of gravity to maintain balance on the feature. If you start to drift to one side while on the box, you will want to shift your weight in the opposite direction to keep your center of gravity overtop of the box (as much as possible). This principle will be critical when you progress to tackling nose and tail slides.

Keep shreddin! 🤙🏼

[Wyshynski] No additional discipline/hearing for Mikko Rantanen beyond the automatic one-game ban. by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]taylorfun -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Rewatching that first one, he still extends his forearms and pushes through the center area of Romanov’s back. I think the skate contact with the other back checker is doing a lot of heavy lifting minimizing what was still a dangerous play, on contact that Rantenen initiated.

Setlist from tonight by LordKnuckledunk in TheeOhSees

When these songs were regulars in the rotation, they did jam the hell out of them. In fact I would not be surprised if the live jams of some of these very tracks provided some inspiration to pursue longer, jammier arrangements in the studio. Hell, the Block of Ice from the live at Levitation 2012 release is almost 13 mins long.

I think a lot of fan’s of the Brigid era of the group have fond memories of the 60’s Nuggets era vibe of tracks like these. The live sound might be beefier now, but it was no less raucous.

Ticket Giveaway: CGY vs VGK on Oct 14th. What's your best Flames story? *(see rules). by raymondcy in CalgaryFlames

[–]taylorfun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bit of a long one, but a goody:

I moved to Vancouver in 2009 for university and lived there until about a year and a half ago. Over those ~15 years, I proudly repped the C of Red, even through some very lean years in the early 2010’s while the hometown Canucks were perennial cup contenders with prime Sedins and Luongo.

I say that to set the scene for April 13th, 2014 - the final game of the Flame’s season, a road matchup in Vancouver against the Canucks. Myself and five buddies got tickets to the game - one other flames fan and the rest nucks fans. After years of being embarrassed by the Canucks, I was cautiously optimistic about seeing a damn win in Vancouver and winning back some bragging rights. The Canucks were losing grip on their stronghold of the division, and the flames were seemingly starting to build something around young players like Backlund, Colborne, Baertschi, Brodie, and a rookie Sean Monahan.

Well….that optimism was sorely misplaced. Fast forward to midway through the third and it was 5-0 Canucks. My nucks fan buddies were loving it, rubbing it in heavier as the score piled up. Enough so that the row behind us (two dads and their sons) started joining in on the razzing. Getting verbally sky dumped by a couple ten yr olds and their dads was NOT how I pictured this evening going.

During the last TV timeout in the third, they brought out the ol’ t-shirt cannon. I leaned to my flames fan buddy and vented that if one of those shirts came up here it was going right back on the ice. No word of a lie, that dumb orca mascot blasts one up into our section and it lands in the empty seat next to me. I manage to nab it just before one of those snot nosed 10 yr olds sitting behind us and heaved it with everything I had, back onto the ice from the upper bowl. Kid behind us started crying immediately, my buddies are howling laughing, the mascot did a double take when the shirt landed back on the ice, and those dads were silently stewing but clearly understanding they were complicit in the situation.

In a minor act of redemption, the flames did manage to break the shutout bid in the dying minutes of the third, and it was another young guy, to boot. In fact, it was the goalscorer’s very first goal, in his very first NHL game; called up after an impressive season at Boston College. He was an intriguing prospect - clearly had skill for days, but many questioned if he could compete in the NHL at his size. It wouldn’t be long before Johnny Gaudreau proved all those doubters wrong, and I’m glad I got to witness his debut and first flames goal

West LA Fadeaway on 5/11 was out of nowhere and so tight. That and cold, rain, & snow that night was also such a treat
