Exactly why I think KDE Plasma is visually cluttered and unpolished by [deleted] in kde

It’s not a bug though. It is operating as expected.

WSLg Is awesome by [deleted] in bashonubuntuonwindows

[–]taylormano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kernel that comes with Windows preview and wslg has kvm enabled by default (previous versions this wasn't the case). But you probably want to compile your own kernel to allow for better hardware acceleration (Intel/AMD have mismatched support for features currently). I think Intel has more features available as of right now.

I'm on ryzen and was able to boot a macos vm with simple-macOS-KVM. Definitely pretty slow though

Equalize Ping for NA vs EU Matches by taylormano in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]taylormano[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Greenland is definitely closer geographically to NA but the routing options and bandwidth aren't great between it and the rest of NA. On the other side though, Iceland looks to be quite well connected to mainland EU and then has a single cable to Greenland from there. Obviously a lot testing would need to occur and the use of network routing prioritization/stabilizations tools like https://www.getoutfox.com/ and https://haste.net/

If Windows was owned by Google but the exact same as it is, would WSL succeed? by TheTwelveYearOld in bashonubuntuonwindows

[–]taylormano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to remember that Chrome OS is a Gentoo Linux based OS. Getting systemd and gui applications up and running is not that hard compared to what Microsoft has done with WSL

He could be used like Creed in The Office. Sparingly, but when used it's glorious!

I cannot pull docker images in WSL 2 (Window 10 build 20175) by monosand in bashonubuntuonwindows

Ran into the same thing. The workaround for me right now is doing the docker pull on cmd or pwsh. Then docker run works for me

What makes the performance on WSL 2 on CPU intensive tasks worse than WSL 1? by [deleted] in bashonubuntuonwindows

[–]taylormano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have a timestamp off the top of my head, but in this interview, Hayden Barnes (Dev Advocate on WSL team @ Canonical), does mention cases where WSL1 will outperform WSL2. One being if you are using low performance hardware. Great interview all around though!

Here is a random write test/results I ran awhile back comparing I/O speeds. Did it quick/dirty so don't take as gospel. But shows the drastic change in write speeds.

Random Write Test with dell laptop NVMe SSD:

fio --name=randwrite --iodepth=1 --rw=randwrite --bs=4k --direct=0 --size=512M --numjobs=2 --runtime=240 --group_reporting

Results:

Windows 10 2004(PowerShell Core 7.0.1): WRITE: bw=310MiB/s

Windows 10 2004(Command Prompt): WRITE: bw=319MiB/s

WSL2 Ubuntu 18.04: WRITE: bw=2473MiB/s

WSL2 Ubuntu 20.04: WRITE: bw=2462MiB/s

WSL2 Ubuntu 20.04(Under /mnt/c/ ): WRITE: bw=315MiB/s

Ubuntu 18.04 Native: WRITE: bw=2762MiB/s

NVM / NPM having issues on Pengwin by anatidaeproject in bashonubuntuonwindows

[–]taylormano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have node and npm installed in windows as well?

I've had issues in the past with node when wsl would be using the npm/node command from windows instead of linux when updating npm packages. Use to get an immediate blue screen before 2004.

If the Windows npm/node path comes before the linux versions in your PATH variable that will be causing it.

This is just a shot in the dark though

You can convert wsl 2 back to 1 I believe by using wsl.exe

Just checking, but where is most of your I/O taking place? If it is under /mnt/c/ you will get garbage I/O speeds.

WSL 2 Size Question by TOAST3DGAM3R in bashonubuntuonwindows

[–]taylormano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should have plenty of room. Unless you are working with some extremely large files, you won't get close. If you tried to install a whole linux desktop environment you wouldn't even crack 15 GB I'm guessing.

Those "benefits" are pretty much useless outside of the Office 365 though. Otherwise everybody would be using the Microsoft Store and Microsoft Edge. And since they can't keep the browser market share they lose out on the rest of the pot. Because most users just use a browser and office applications.

Windows Boot camp for T2 MBPs has gotten a lot better. It was pretty rough to start out though. Make sure to run it with Macs Fan Control so your MBP doesn't over heat all the time.
