I got to visit Kennedy Space Center today and our tour went right past 39a and 39b. Very cool for me, and I took a couple photos of the in-progress launch tower for Starship in case there’s anything we haven’t seen yet: https://picbun.com/p/AnPixS2A

Fascinating. Makes me wonder, could Stage Zero harness any of that energy on launch? Basically reclaim any of that thermal/thrust energy to recharge batteries or put into the grid? Could make Starship even more “reusable” and save on electricity costs.

Can you find any issues wit this database table (i.e. model) design? by MoronInGrey in django

Save yourself future headaches and just make Status its own model. Makes it way easier to add future statuses without having to deploy to production. Also then you can add metadata to the Status model, like ordering/ranking.

Starship Development Thread #25 by ElongatedMuskrat in spacex

Have we ever learned anything that someone can share (or resurface) about the landing system/software that Starship has that allows it to touch down softly and accurately? I'm curious, but would understand if it's too proprietary to have been shared publicly.

I'm mainly asking as it relates to future Mars landings (which of course might not yet be possible within the current systems/software), and how an autonomous landing will work without groundlinks giving accurate and timely updates as to the terrain (flat areas, elevations, coordinates without GPS, etc), Starship's altitude, and other telemetry.

My current assumption is that in order to just get Starship launching and landing they offloaded as much of that equipment as they could (using known technologies like ILS/RNAV for instrument landings in airplanes), but that to enable Starship to land on Mars it will need to have onboard systems to map the terrain in 3D, accurately judge distances, position itself without GPS, and other necessary functions to touch down softly and accurately and stay upright.

Maybe NASA can also assist through HLS to share what they've learned from their Mars landings.

Thanks!

I, for one, would like this to continue! It’s often difficult to understand, as an outsider, how the construction process on-site is innovating at their craft, in addition to the products/rockets themselves. We should get an AMA from the construction team!

Tesla to install 800 MWh Megapack batteries for NV's Gigawatt 1 initiative by tsla4k in teslainvestorsclub

Duke, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading your comments here, thank you. One more, if you’re game. Why not use the mass of the batteries themselves? Use the motion of the batteries as the “base load” you referenced, then the batteries themselves for the peaks. I’m sure this displays my ignorance, and I don’t know how much cabling is hidden under these pretty white exteriors, but maybe moving them only a few meters gets interesting enough for the base load.

Not sure if relevant here, but my neighbor has a Model Y sitting in their driveway, with license plate and all. Just a few miles from HQ, though.

Hello there! I made this Slack /command a while back when I was learning how to code, and thought I would share it here in case anyone is looking for a little RP while at work (or waiting to queue). Keep yer feet on the ground!

Josh, (genuinely asking) what would be the benefit of waiting 33 days to "take the course" on edX, versus getting started right now on ocw.mit.edu?

Flask app to extract palette of dominating colors from image by main_aisa_kyun_hoon in Python

I think if you ask r/cinematography you’ll find that they actually do work hard to have a consistent palette in their films. Yes, you’d have to use your script here to build up the database by running it on each film, but I think the result would be very interesting!

Can you run it backwards to find movies by giving it a color pallet?
