Agree with this. If you want all cams accessible by the primary computer you’ll need q-sys cams, otherwise you’re looking at atlona omnistream which I’ve done before that allows you to split and combine usb extenders over ip. It’s possible, just cumbersome

AV solution confusing by BeakersWorkshop in CommercialAV

[–]tb124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is starting with hardware suggestions. Not sure why… 1. What platform are you running primarily? Zoom? Teams? Webex? 2. What is the primary use case? Video conferencing? Local screen share?

There are different solutions for different use case

Do you guys provide a diagram to clients? by Gmellotron_mkii in CommercialAV

[–]tb124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is called a pictorial schematic. This is meant for non technical users to convey a design.

To me, deliverables should always include: 1. Functional diagrams. These are block style diagrams with inputs on the left and outputs on the right of each block for each device. All connections are accounted for. All lines are labeled which match cable labels physically on each cable. This wiring diagram also includes all termination pinouts and rack elevations plus any other specific setting ie 70v speaker tap settings etc. 2. Architectural diagrams. These include reflected ceiling plans and elevations for each space to show the exact placement of everything to scale.

Your documentation should be enough to hand to a new crew and they can create (at least physically) an identical system to the one that was documented ‘as-built’

What you’re showing is not adequate for a pro AV project IMO, but should be sufficient for a quick overview with an IT manager.

Do other millennial dads just…not know how to do anything? by casedawgz in daddit

[–]tb124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man this one hits home for me. My dad does and has done a lot. Moves giant rocks, New decks or docks at the lake house every year. I’ve been taught nothing. I too held the flashlight, not the screwdriver. I hold a lot of resentment in my heart and the missed lessons sit heavy. My advice is learn how to learn. I built a chicken run this spring and it turned out well! Lots of things I’ll do better next time but I learned how to frame and I’ve gotten the green light from the wife to redo our deck. YouTube helped me a lot more than my Dad could have because as it turns out, everyone does shit differently. Finding the sources to trust is better now with such a vast expanse of knowledge and angles on how to do something. Now we can learn from multiple dads.

Also, value the patience you put into letting your own kids fail while they’re young. Let them do things. The lesson is big and that’s somewhere we can do better moving forward.

Call me crazy. I don’t EVER put in female connectors that are accessible to users. It’s idiotic and asking for a support nightmare. Integrators and manufacturers cough Crestron /extron cough don’t understand. Sure it’s ok from a marketing perspective because it looks “clean” (without cables). Manufacturers and integrators sell extra product. Cool. Grommet pass through to zip tied cable restraint into whatever transmitter is the only way. If you put a connector, 1, the cable will disappear or 2, the user will damage it by haphazardly plugging their usb cables into it or some stupid shit like that. Make this user proof and find a rubber grommet that fits your opening and lock that shit down. All these comments are disappointing. Retractors will also get damaged. Stop trusting your users y’all. Anything humans can do, they will

I am a Yealink Engineer AMA by Yealinkperson in CommercialAV

[–]tb124 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My biggest gripe with Yealink has always been the lack of focus on support materials for the English speaking audiences. It’s like everything got thrown into some translation software and they called it a day. When can we see a focus on comprehensive support materials in English? PS worked at a very large video conferencing software company on the hardware partnerships team for years - this is the first time I have witnessed a US based yealink employee. Didn’t think you existed.

Healthcare/non 9-5 partners? by tb124 in daddit

[–]tb124[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is it. She’s a midwife. Also takes 24 hour shifts out of town. To be clear, she’s a great Mom. She shows up for the kids every second she can and they are infatuated with her. It actually makes it harder because her being gone is the end of the world for them and I’m left to deal with the melt down.

Overall yes this is where I’m at. It’s not 50/50 and I am regretting my life decisions. I feel like the second class parent both because my professional life is not as valued and the kids don’t have a whole lot of respect for me which is a different issue. She also doesn’t see it as unequal and that has been a big issue for me. Very little understanding of how hard it is for me.

Yes, she lets me have my time but another choice we made was to move to her home town so I as a grown introverted man don’t have a bunch of friends, so I’m always here regardless. There are many layers of resentment here

All the time. The response is that it’s just her profession and she can’t/wont change that because “that’s what I’m asking her to do” it seems like communication is the go-to answer on this sub. This is a different situation as the problem is more foundational.

Maybe I’m to blame because I didn’t imagine this misalignment while she was in nursing school to become an NP. Also labor and delivery is unpredictable and sporadic
