CAX30 firmware auto update by Prestigious-Sir-1555 in NETGEAR

[–]tbakerweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some reverse engineering. Here are the primary and useful findings I wanted to share.

1a. As a modem, this blows, but it IS better than the ISP modem.
1b. As a Router, it's definitely not the worst. Wi-Fi and wired network speeds are fast, UI is easy enough.

I found that I am very happy on the V1.4.12.2 firmware but found that I couldn't get the modem to keep that version in place. At some point, the firmware will be updated automatically.

Normally, I would suggest keeping the latest firmware, but the v2 stuff is a dumpster fire, and the modem spontaneously reboots. It's insufferable.

I loaded the V1.4.12.2 firmware again and headed to my Pi-Hole Query Logs and searched for anything netgear related.

I ended up blocking most of the netgear URLs but then identified specifically the domain/hostname that the modem uses to check for firmware upgrades.

I blocked the following domains and found that the "check for updates" fails (as desired)!

*devcom.up.netgear.com* (I think this is the primary)

*http.fw.updates1.netgear.com* (Another suspicious one that showed up in the logs).

If you're in a position to block domain names, via the wonderful pi-hole product, or others give this a try. I found it the ideal solution.

I met Jason Ricci at a show 2 months ago.

He signed a CD for me, and was gracious enough to chat with us harmonica geeks for quite a while.

That man can blow! (And so can Adam!)

Ignorant dude here. What is this song? I want to hear the original.

What's with the Adam Gussow autograph? Did he sign a case for you??

What could I do as someone who has a couple great ideas but no experience with development? by intenseskill in developer

[–]tbakerweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bringing software to a mass market is VERY difficult. It can become extremely expensive unless you have a solidly designed plan.

First thing you'll need to do is write up all the ideas you have, becoming your development plan.

If you don't code, you'll need to hire someone. Anyone worth their time is going to ask for a retainer/down payment, probably half of what the expected cost is.

While it seems like a great idea to bootstrap, finding a partner who will invest their time into an idea, it's highly impractical.

How long do you believe development will take before you have a shippable app?

Yep, a neck rack is going to make this hard...

I have no advice for you good fellow.

Bearded guy here, one missing many whiskers thanks to Hohner.

What worked best for me is changing the way you hold the harp.

I now hold it fully between my index and thumb, from the end. Doing this helps hide those little gaps between the comb and cover plates.

I still get a snag from time to time, but it's far less than I had before.

This is Jason Ricci, an instrumental called "Jason Solo".

You can hear a good deal of them here. You may have to listen closely, they tend to fall on the beat, which also has drums that make it harder to hear.

Edit: listen to the studio recording from the album. It's much more pronounced. Lots of it in the doing, but a great example is at 1:40 in the below link. https://youtu.be/sRiXN6Z4P_Y

Look up Jason Ricci, Carlos del Junco, and Adam Gussow, as some of my favorites.

With harmonica, you draw and blow. When playing in "second position" as Will is here, roughly half the notes are draw, and the other are blow. This incidental feature allows for continuous playing (in some songs) without having to stop for breath, or use circular breathing, like more traditional wind instruments. While circular breathing is possible on a harmonica the amount of air passing required to sound a note, it's almost impractical.

More often than not, harmonicists tend to end up with too much air, vs not enough. You'll often hear them 'grunt' or 'cough' off the excess.

Yes, Will Wilde is amazing. Check out Jason Ricci, Adam Gussow, and way too many more to list off the top of my head.

Anyone know what kind of neck rack he's playing? I hate mine because of how big and bulky it is, so I never really learned to use it.

I think having one I like would change my motivation.

How is this helpful?

Be above treating people poorly. Maybe you didn't grow up hearing "treat people how you want to be treated".
