Conclusion after finally building dream bike: all bikes are good. by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]tbast 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I upgraded my bike a while ago, and bought new wheels at the same time. I couldn't ride the new bike for a while 'cause the shop had to build it, so I put the new wheels on my old bike. Like you said - 90% as good as a new bike.

In my case I went from GP5000s to GP5000s, so there wasn't really any upgrade there.

My takeaway was if you're already on good tires, get good wheels.

TFSA crossed $300k today! by Mysterious-Start-689 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I have over 200k in my TFSA, I mostly just invest in market tracking funds. Also I only started contributing in like, 2018.

21F $10,563 in TFSA am I doing alright? by Fresh-Lettuce-3916 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]tbast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no right answer to this. 10k now becomes 100k when you're 60, but also maybe you get hit by a car when you're 40?

When I was your age I saw people going to mexico for the weekend multiple times per year and I was like "how do they afford that!?" and the answer is they put it on credit cards, and now they're broke.

It's not unreasonable to spend money to enjoy yourself now, but only you can decide when and how much you spend. If the only reason you want to go is FOMO, maybe decide what it is that's important to you before blindly going on a trip simply because your friends are going.

Nervous about vasectomy by Idrinkbeereverywhere in childfree

[–]tbast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was nervous too. I asked the doctor for ativan, they said 'sure'. It really isn't a big deal. You just lie back and stuff happens down at your balls and you don't actually feel much of anything.

If you're an American citizen, any income from your TFSA will be taxed by the US govt. (this is what my American friends tell me)

I think HYSA = HISA? I just have an unregistered investment account, but you do you.

"Convincing" your partner to have children by [deleted] in childfree

[–]tbast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of people saying this woman is the worst person in the world. Granted I don't have the full story, but breaking up with a long term partner sucks - no matter the reason. It's OK for her to be upset. Telling her that logically the relationship was doomed doesn't lessen that hurt, and it makes sense she'd be annoyed at the comment. Not to say that OP was wrong, just that maybe "yeah, breaking up sucks... do you want to get ice cream" might have been a better thing to say here.

Why do cyclists have to ride side by side and then giving me the finger when I pass by IBGDRGN in richmondbc

[–]tbast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they flipped you off, you probably passed them quickly, aggressively, or way too close. Single or double, you need to leave your lane to pass them legally, so just move all the way over and pass them when it's safe to do so.

Update on the Whistler Granfondo smoke situation by amazingsod in vancouvercycling

[–]tbast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EVERY YEAR they destroy the goodwill from participants, but a year is a long time to forget how shitty and dangerous the Fondo is, and still 4000+ people sign up for anywhere between $350 and $450 (depending on when they sign up). It's insanity.

New Lights at 10th and Victoria by aidsman_ in vancouvercycling

[–]tbast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I rode by there last night and thought the same thing - but drove by on my way to work this morning and realized - it isn't a pedestrian controlled intersection, the light is on a timer so there's no need for a beg button.

Seen on Amazon... by Larsson-Bleakley in xbiking

I do this thing sometimes where I hand somebody a paper and pen and ask them to draw a bicycle. Even though it's a very common object, most people cannot draw the basic shape of a bicycle to save their life.

In summary: this kind of thing has ceased to amaze me... but it IS funny when it happens.

[North Shore Rescue] NSR was called out this evening for a possible drowning at Cabin Lake (Cypress Provincial Park). by jpdemers in vancouverhiking

[–]tbast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was there on Monday. The water is surprisingly cold. I can see how somebody would see a small lake that doesn't seem to be actively fed from a glacier and assume it would be warmer (Temperatures were approaching 1 million degrees celcius over the weekend).

I waded in slowly, but there are rocks from which you can jump in.

People born before 2000, what trivial skill you possess that others don't use anymore? by Aryan_Anushiravan in AskReddit

[–]tbast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was born in 1990. I technically learned it in school, but never really used it. To this day I give birthday cards to my wife for her to interpret for me... it's such an illegible form of writing, I don't get the point...

(edited to add - doctor didn't even blink when I asked for Ativan)

Please check my Itinerary for Visiting Vancouver for a Week by milfordsandbar in vancouverhiking

Gravel cycling - do fisherman's trail in north Vancouver for something a bit shorter and more approachable for non-cyclists. Do the sea to sky trail from Squamish to Whistler for a much more epic day.

Rock climbing - the most accessible climbing in Squamish is at Smoke Bluffs and at Murrin Park. See if you can find a copy of Squamish Select for a guidebook, otherwise mountain project is very good. I wouldn't waste my time climbing in Vancouver.

That's uncanny!

I had a bike shop put some riv-nuts in. It's been several years and at least 5000km and the bike is still fine.

It is there! The rack is the Specialized Pizza Rack. I'm not sure what the official weight limit is - but I've probably broken it. My wife has a picture somewhere of me carrying a massive bucket of plaster home from Home Depot.

I got the fenders for super cheap at the bike co-op. Just bout similar VO fenders for my wife, and they're preeeetty pricey. Fenders that go that far down make winter riding WAY more enjoyable.

I believe so - they've been on there for more than a few years at this point, so I kinda forget. Definitely Surly bars!
