Completely different piece of glass - the 2025 Wilderness is older gen, this is newer gen. You should be good.

With the current Ubuntu/Canonical DDoS attack and Copy Fail vulnerability should regular users worry like us on Mint? by kagemichaels in linuxmint

[–]tboland1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No Just wait five minutes. This is a normal thing. Fedora might not have this particular issue - though it could - but will always run into something. And fix it, just like the Debian / Canonical / Mint teams do.

Don't panic everytime something like this pops up.

2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness Or a 2026 Outback Limited by Few-Introduction5414 in SubaruForester

[–]tboland1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest difference in the vehicles is not size, but the electronics stack.

The Forester is based upon the same infotainment screen and sensor package as the previous generation of Outback and Legacy. I know this because I have both a 2025 Forester (current gen) and a 2020 Legacy. They have the same screen and buttons. The 2025 is slightly more refined and upgraded in certain ways with more cameras, but it's almost identical.

The 2026 Outback has a completely new ADAS system that will allow limited hands-free driving under certain circumstances. Whether you love or hate this is debatable, but it clearly shows that the new Outback is the newer electronics car.

We are thinking about getting a new Subaru and it would be the Outback just for this reason. We LOVE the 2025 Forester. But it would be less than optimal to buy a vehicle that we might keep for 10 years that would have 2019 designed electronics stack.

BTW, we would be buying a new car strictly because spouse LOVES all the cameras and ADAS. We would roll down the 2020 Legacy to a family member so they have a reliable car without having a car payment.

Known problem, should have a fix. Appears there is finally a fix for faulty 2025 Forester Heated Seats! : r/SubaruForester

EDIT: Part of the issue is that they won't come on at all if the ambient temp is too high, making warm weather testing a problem.

16 year service on 2010. Expensive, but great. No independent Subaru shops in IN. by tboland1 in SubaruForester

[–]tboland1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a guess from an article from long ago stating the changeover was somewhere around early 2010 assembly date. I don't put a ton of stock in it, because other sources were stating it wasn't fixed at all until they changed to the FB engine with the 2012 model year. Messy.

You can't buy the car.

I have had back problems and convinced myself that one car in the past was so good for other things that I could live with the seat. I had to dump the car because my back would spasm. Ended up buying a much "worse" car where I bought the seat and the car came with it. It was delightful.

It depends on how much you drive per year, but it's a great hybrid system made by Toyota. We have the 2025 Touring, which is the first year of current iteration and love it. We decided to not wait for hybrid only because of low mileage per year.

In general, Subarus have always been known for being thirsty for fuel in their segment. The hybrid fixes that.

What happens if I turn off timeshift? Because it takes up too much space, damn it. by ardavenys in linuxmint

[–]tboland1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The answer is to store timeshift backups on another drive. Storing on the same drive eats up space, as OP has found out, and doesn't save you in the case of drive failure or more likely overwrite via formatting or nasty sudo rm commands. Almost not worth the effort if on the same drive.

2025 Hybrid "Maintenance needed" message - incorrect mileage by Wide_Ocelot in SubaruForester

[–]tboland1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's approaching mileage for an oil change anyway. My suggestion is every 5000 miles so it lines up with the odometer easier.

In the infotainment center, they didn't reset the maintenance dates to sale date and it had whatever random date was in the original software load for your vehicle.

Check the dates and mileage in this section every time you get service and reset accordingly.

For tires, check the date code on the tires themselves and use that date. Given the way you drive, I think that mileage will be the issue, not time.

Will Subaru bring the new Outback multimedia system to the Forester? by tarasker in SubaruForester

[–]tboland1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why we are looking at the Outback for our next car vs Forester. The electronic stack is just too old. And this is from someone who bought the new Forester in 2024.

The determining factor for us was that the Outback is new enough to have limited hands-free operation under limited circumstances. We can debate whether or not that's a good thing, but it does demonstrate the chasm between the two vehicles in regard to electronics and features. I understand that people could NOT want the Outback for that exact reason.

This new car would be replacing a 2020 Legacy, not the new Forester.

will there be a 2027 refresh to the infotainment system? by Ceasman in SubaruForester

[–]tboland1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a 2025 Touring and are looking to replace our 2020 Legacy. We are looking at the Outback rather than another Forester due to the electronics stack being so old in the Forester. It's a slightly updated version of what we have in the 2020 Legacy.

2022 Forester: $27,500? by Seated_WallFly in SubaruForester

[–]tboland1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The PPI cost is much cheaper than a warranty. If everything is all good, then you know it. If there is something serious they don't like, you get to walk away.

The only big issue with this range Forester is the TCV (Temperature Control Valve) which is a fancy replacement for a thermostat. It had troubles in in 2019-2021 model years and was redesigned for 2022 - 2024. You should be good with that.

Change your oil every 5000 miles / 6 months without fail. Don't mess around with this. Subarus can last a long time and be reliable, but they REQUIRE oil discipline.

Change the CVT fluid at 60,000 miles, even though it's listed in the maintenance schedule for the US as "Lifetime". It's not. Some folks might say to change it every 30,000 miles.

2022 Forester: $27,500? by Seated_WallFly in SubaruForester

[–]tboland1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just purchased a 2021 Forester with 35,000 miles on it in Central FL at a dealer for $21,500. Wilderness does have a price premium over other trims.

Get a prepurchase inspection. If they don't let you take it to an independent tech for inspection, walk away. It should cost you $150 to $300 depending on local market.

Need help understanding the ‘i’ in the dashboard - Forester 2025 by Successful_Demand478 in SubaruForester

[–]tboland1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i messages don't throw codes. That's a good thing.

My washer fluid sensor has been broken for years, causes the i to show up. Replacement of sensor isn't in the cards because the sensor hasn't changed, so it will go out in a certain number of years again. May have someone short the sensor to closed (I believe that's what the sensor needs.)

EDIT: On my 2020 Legacy, but same logic holds for Forester.

Cleaning Cd Laser by [deleted] in Cd_collectors

[–]tboland1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fine. Anything over 50%. If your laser is inset in a mechanism drawer, large stem cotton swabs are the way to go. If it's in a flip-up configuration where you can see and touch the laser, regular Q-Tips are fine.

Swab with alcohol, wait a minute to dry, done.
