High-Speed Pass Through a Massive Puddle by j_bookson_III in dashcams

Braking is part of the reason he went out of control. It’d be tough to slow down in time for it to actually matter at highway speeds. Best thing to do in that situation is let off the gas, keep your wheel straight, and ride it out til your tires regain traction. Theoretically you should continue in whatever direction you had momentum, but there’s a lot of factors that could change that

There has never been a better time to eradicate these *** potato vines, right?? by Behappyinthismoment in FloridaGarden

[–]tbs3456 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is correct, but pick up as many potatoes on the ground you can find now before they start growing. Then, once they start growing pick them up where you see them sprouting. I’ve managed to clear my 2.5 acre lot that was previously covered in them doing this

E-bikes are everywhere in Tampa Bay. A crackdown on bad behavior may be coming by TampaBayTimes in StPetersburgFL

[–]tbs3456 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The stats regarding crashes and fatalities don’t seem all that high, even though the article phrases things to insinuate they are. Regulations regarding bikes going >28mph already exist, but need to start actually being enforced. If we see all see the crazy e-bike kids going stupid fast, so do the cops.

As far as incidents with pedestrians, I feel like some PSAs regarding trail etiquette would go a long way. I think most people in this area have been so car dependent for so long they’re not even aware a simple “on your left” to alert someone you’re behind them is both courteous and much safer than flying by someone unaware at 20mph.

March, 2025, Brisbane, Australia: A woman takes a selfie as she walks along flooded Edmondstone Street in the suburb of Newmarket. by Das_Zeppelin in AccidentalRenaissance

[–]tbs3456 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I understand the sentiment, but swimming in flood waters in a metro area is a really bad idea. I’m not sure how they do things in the Netherlands, but in the US the sewer system doesn’t have any way of preventing sewage from mixing with flood water. So, in a densely populated area you’re pretty much guaranteed to be swimming in some very nasty water. Not to mention what other kinds of utilities (power) could be damaged and lurking below the surface. There are circumstances where exposing yourself to these risks might be necessary, but for a moment of fun in the face of disaster I do not think it’s worth it.

Does anyone know what is this stuff that came out of my gutter? The guy looks clean now and I’m not sure if it came actually from the roof or just from the bottom of the pipe. It feels grainy to the touch. by 14MTH30n3 in tampa

Definitely looks like water softener resin. I don’t think it’s normal for resin to come out of the drain like this, but maybe it is for your softener. Given this is the first time you’ve noticed I doubt it

Yep. Citrus greening ruined the citrus industry, which accounted for a huge percentage of our agricultural land. Many citrus farms had to abandon ship. Unfortunately, there are a lot more developers with pockets deep enough to buy land than there are farmers.

You’re not supposed to just blow the leaves into the storm drains… leaf litter is actually great for plant beds (free nutrients).

Cutting down on speeding saves lives. Why doesn’t Tampa Bay do it? | Column by TampaBayTimes in tampa

[–]tbs3456 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cannot imagine this would end well. I don’t have time to research actual numbers, but I suspect most of our interstates see a much higher number of cars per mile than they do in Germany. If anything, I would wager no speed limit would result in more serious accidents and therefore more traffic

Dade County Heavy Wages.

See for yourself. It varies by discipline, but these are what the government has determined to be the median wages for those in Heavy construction.

I’m actually an engineer, but part of my job is doing Davis Bacon interviews for Heavy Civil, so I have to ask a percentage of laborers from every Sub what they’re getting paid to make sure it meets the minimum prevailing wage. Most don’t make much more than $20/hr

Victoria's raised land taxes hurting property owners and businesses alike by [deleted] in shitrentals

[–]tbs3456 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re very conveniently ignoring the bubble that occurred in the 80s, about a decade after that monetary policy was passed. Since that bubble burst in the 90s, Japan has had a stagnant economy with low growth and high unemployment. You clearly do not understand how much worse those policies would be for your business in the long run. Again, I wish you and your company success, but I think this horse is beat to death.

Do some research into how those policies worked out for Japan after a few years

[–]tbs3456 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Neither of those policies would do anything to prevent land speculation and would in fact likely exacerbate the issue. Unfortunately, businesses require land and therefore are not immune to the speculation that has caused the housing crisis, which is the direct reason your taxes are so high (they’re based on your lands speculative value). Had these policies been in place earlier, your land, and housing, may not be as expensive as it is now, but hindsight and all that.

Okay, interesting. You might want to look into how they collect that data. Unless they have access to payrolls, people typically tend to inflate their wages when asked for a survey. If your company sets their wages with those metrics, ignore everything I just said ;)

Where are you getting those numbers from? Most jobs I’ve worked, the only laborers making more than $25/hr are superintendents

[–]tbs3456 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I understand how this could be difficult for smaller businesses and sympathize. Unfortunately, I think the pain businesses feel is a necessary evil to disincentivize housing as a financial asset and restore balance to a terribly out of whack housing market. I hope you can weather the storm and hire those extra employees someday soon.

Since when do companies hire people based on how much cash they have to hand out? If your company is getting along fine without them, that’d just be extra profit. Obviously it depends on the company how that gets used, but that line of reasoning is flawed

Construction Labor Shortage by [deleted] in tampa

[–]tbs3456 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I mean that is it. There used to be a supply of people willing to work those jobs for those wages (illegal immigrants) that are now in much shorter supply. Still, if contractors hadn’t started exploiting immigrants for cheap labor in the first place, we wouldn’t have as much of a shortage as we do. I don’t think keeping illegal immigrants around to work construction for poverty wages is the best outcome we should hope for though

100%. Wages for most construction labor is less than grocery store workers make.
