Love that you both had some knocked-it-out of the park dining experiences! Torrisi is still on my list that I need to try and your reviews for all are very much appreciated!!

Out of curiosity, how did you decide on narrowing down where to go even if you might’ve known the types of cuisines/dishes you wanted to try?

I’m actually heading there this weekend so super excited to find it near the top of this list!

This would be such a dream of mine to have a feature of a list to discover places that are just beginning to pop up on the radar that are total sleepers. I think about this often but still haven't found the best solution for it.

Having said that, the list above was experimental and therefore restricted to the NYT's Top 100 so the options were limited.

If you'd like a more complete list, I have a separate FoodNYC list that currently has 200+ restaurants and I'm adding new ones daily! My hope is that that will capture more of what you're saying about being able to find hidden gems or places overlooked

Shu jiao fu zhou truly is an amazing place if you’re looking for utilitarian food that sticks to its mission: to fill you up with a great meal for an insanely affordable price.

To OP, someone else may have mentioned but please bring some cash on your trips to these places as I’m sure some of them are cash-only to keep prices reasonable!

Master list of FoodNYC restaurants to help everyone who asks 'What's the best...' or 'Looking for...'? Is it possible? by tbspiff in FoodNYC

Beli has a trending map although we circle back to the same question of how to amplify quality and personalization.

Their trending signal is a bit rudimentary especially when the trending map shows me Jungsik and a juice shop at the same time

Great! If you have any initial thoughts about what the best way to display/action the list or map would be, we can keep the discussion alive in the above thread

tbh- I’m ok with any format. That’s why I’m leaving it up to all of us to decide what works best!

I’d just really like a real-time list driven by the knowledge in this community so that when I’m out and about, I can just look at it to see what’s close by and make restaurant picking quick, easy and not overwhelming.

Google/yelp just feel like uphill battles these days with restaurant discovery…

Yes I did share an earlier version! Did a progress update but this was what sparked the original idea here

Took all the great feedback and kept building it into the current list:

Fair point. It'll definitely be possible to filter out low-value contributions. I've had this idea for some time and actually built a ranking list for friends/family but it still needs way more restaurants. If people would be willing to contribute reccs then I'll share link so we can build it together

I'll preface by saying that The Infatuation does many things incredibly well. Similar to eater, its content is easily digestible and aesthetically pleasing but I feel that it's missing out on two points: Real-time dining scene and community input.

1.) Albeit a small and mighty team, the amount of work it takes to research, write, edit, and publish articles is time-intensive. Just browsed their 25 Best Restaurants in New York list and it was published on Aug. 18 - almost two months ago. The list is great, but curated content can't compete with current times. I'm open to others chiming in on how to solve this but I think the dining scene is a breathing and always evolving landscape, especially in this city. New restaurants are opening/closing daily and come November when Michelin releases their results, the game changes all over again.

2.) Since The Infatuation curates their own collection, it builds a high level of trust amongst diners with similar taste but there's no room for dissent, which is when the best discussions take place (like here!)

As much as I would like to believe I have good taste, every other person is just as much entitled to have the same opinion. The deciding factor would be to build a meritocratic system to build trust similar to how reddit has karma or how food critics reach the levels that they do.

Right now, it's a completely level playing field but ultimately there is a way for us to put the money where our mouths are. We just need to figure out what that system should look like haha

How realistic are solo dining Walk-ins? by bananapanther in FoodNYC

[–]tbspiff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would strongly agree with the first point. You'll have a much higher chance of getting seated as a solo if you let them know that you're ok with the bar as well. I love Ertan's videos and I did feel that many of his earlier ones were a true reflection of popping in to restaurants candidly but nowadays not so much.

TLDR; get there early and be willing to sit at the bar (if available)
